How do you create topic links?

I've seen people create links to threads, e.g. "Doomguy created a topic in X", and they are a nice, pretty way of linking content.. but I can't figure out for the life of me how to do this... 

 

Can anyone help or point me to documentation?

Just paste the thread link, the forum automatically does the rest.

you have to wait a few seconds

Ahh... so if you submit the post before waiting for the image to load, you are hosed...
