does anyone know of any good sites that explain how to made decent looking textures for games (like doom) that have a limited palette? I'm having some trouble getting my textures to look like..well, beleaveable textures.

I think it'd be okay for you to check out sites where contain quake1 or quake2 textures tutorial site. Those textures have low color-bit palletes, although they aren't as long as Doom's, but it's nearly close enough. You may use paintshop or arcsoft's photostudio to convert the textures afterwards.
