let's stop calling them "things"

Recommended Posts

When I am mapping or scripting, I call them Things.

When I am writing DECORATE, I call them Actors.

When I am in game and playing, I call them monsters or decorations.

I don't see what is wrong with calling them Things in the mapping context.

I always called them things due to learning level design from DoomCad and never thought it was weird... just figured that was the universal doom blanket term. ;)

I like "Thing", I think it's cute. The modern accepted term would be "Object" (or if you wanna get really technical, "Instance of a Class" but that sucks).

As a Unity user to me it's a "GameObject", Game Maker users think of it as an "Actor", Fusion users would say "Active Object". I don't know why you need this information. I'm just a nerd.

In the Starcraft editor terrain objects like stones, ramps and doors are called doodads.

So yeah I put forth the doodad motion.

SomeTHING wrong?   We can say anyTHING we want!   Some like big THINGS they can not lie!   Shake hands with THING.

Having edited Doom on and off since 95 or 96, they will always be THINGS to me in Doom.   DeHackEd calls them things.   The entry in map wad is called Things and all map editors call them so.   And also mentioned, they're called Things in the source code.

If we're talking about decorate lump or the same type of code in a source port's .pk3, only then I'll call them Actors.

If it's a text-based Multi User Dungeon (M.U.D.) then they're Mobiles, though I haven't touched a MUD in I don't know how many years, though it's interesting to read the data that makes them up or some old content I copied and pasted into text files.   At least some God Wars MUD had a Doom area, though it didn't fit with the rest of the medieval fantasy type stuff.

If it's a specific type of enemies in Zelda, then they're Moblins.
