Quake 1, GPL and all

Recommended Posts

Been playing too much modded Minecraft lately, and my love for modding, Quake 1 and the fact that the max FOV slider in Minecraft is literally called Quake Pro got me thinking.

Just what does "The source code of the Quake and QuakeWorld engines was licensed under the GPL on December 21, 1999. The id Software maps, objects, textures, sounds, and other creative works remain under their original proprietary license." mean? Can I make shitty blocky Grunts and Ogres with the OG textures and sounds or do I have to make my own?

It means that all the actual game content is still copyrighted and you cannot redistribute it in any shape or form. But you can use the source code how you see fit.

Technically you can probably reuse the textures and sounds, it's not like anybody will really care, they've been used in Doom mods thousands of times. But you're not given the right to do it by Quake being GPLed.

Speaking of Minecraft and Quake, I remember in the earliest builds of the game from 2010, Notch implemented MD3 support for the game
