Needed for Source Ports: Where does YouTube get it's "auto generated channel" info?

Recommended Posts

Some of you may have noticed auto-generated channels on YouTube such as this one:

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAnVBFbb83KljzeAIHNTwmA

I find it quite fascinating that a somewhat obscure bootleg game had it's own page auto-generated. Apparently, it's not that uncommon:

Each one of those covers that's been chosen seems to be fan art. What I want to know is, where is it getting this data from? Obviously the description is ripped from wikipedia which makes enough sense, but where the hell is that "box art" coming from?

DeHackEd actually got an auto generated page, I'm guessing this happened recently:

The thing is, it for some reason lacks art. The obvious choice would be the splash screen which is in fact featured on the wikipedia page but it's obviously not getting the art from wikipedia. If i can find out where it's sourcing this art from, I could give it the proper splash screen and fix this issue in future if I ever see it again.

I doubt anyone has any more info than I do, but it cant hurt to ask!

Just bumping this because we now have numerous Doom-related auto-generated channels that have no image and no proper description:

ZDaemon - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC7rIXm6S4t_BNDGDyXsYTkw

ZDoom - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPpp3dvvIqfjBiEcHuPVK2Q

Doom Legacy - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZbR6uW1HiHzcScTd_4aT1g

DeHackEd - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCM8C0uMYm4hQpdrL8KiFbQ

Hopefully if I keep bumping this periodically, someone who knows what the deal is can tell me how to provide good "box art" and descriptions for these..

Worth noting, I found no auto generated channels for PrBoom, Odamex, Zandronum, Skulltag or GZDoom.

I think this started when they introduced YouTube Gaming.  They pretty much created categories for specific games like Twitch has, and then YT auto-generated "channels" based on each one.  But how things like Dehacked, ZDoom, etc. got on there, I am unsure.

It's possible they were created by people putting them as the name of the game in their videos.  When you upload you can go to advanced options, set the category to gaming, then it will let you input the game you are playing there.  Possibly some people put Dehacked etc. in that space.

I was interested in this for a long time too. The description of these videos claim that they're auto-generated based on people's interest, but considering some of the obscure stuff I have run into (also various obscure bands I like), I can never understand how this thing works and whether it truly is an automated process.

Fusion also seems to be missing a channel altogether, same with RorEternity.

I kid ofcourse. For Box art, id suggest the official logo's when available.

Id love an auto generated channel that looks at wads that require Dehacked but no dice. I am working on a list of bigger releases that rely on patching the exe before playing - So far i have not seen such a list, might be useful for some (As is with many of my ideas, i reckon. haha)
