⬆️ Doomworld Community Top WADs of All Time (resurrected)

Recommended Posts

10 points: nerve.wad. As far I’m concerned, my gold-standard of limit-removing episode.

10 points: sigil.wad / sigil_compat.wad. A limit-removing episode by John Romero which features Jimmidis. Enough said.

5 points: e1m8b.wad. The first level for Classic Doom created by John Romero after 21 years...

5 points: e1m4b.wad. And the second one...

5 points: selfish5.wad. If I were told this is a lost level by Dr. Sleep, I would believe that.

5 points: e1contest.wad*. Interesting compilation of levels in the E1 style reportedly reviewed and rated by John Romero in the summer of 2001.

5 points: retroeps.wad. Excellent remake of E1 by Chris Hansen. Somehow this is related to the previous one, according to its author.

5 points: pe1_phob.wad + pe1_pmus.wad. Another yet remake of E1 by Paul Corfiatis, with a bonus level by Kristian Aro.

3 points: jptr_v40.wad. A megawad for Doom Registered released on Dec, 1994 or Jan, 1995, if I remember correctly. The Ultimate Doom wasn’t a thing back then... I have the book and I’m considering purchasing another one in pristine condition with the floppy. Fucking IHC tags...

2 points: plutmidi.wad. It enhances heavily the atmosphere of plutonia.wad and, as bonus, John Romero helped me to choose two Jimmidis from this release to accompany e1m4b.wad and e1m8b.wad: Fire Hive for e1m4b.wad and Stealth Mode for e1m8b.wad, for the curious.

When was this? Could it be what lead to him picking Jimmy for Sigil's midi soundtrack?

Good and clever question. In spoiler the answer, because it’s off-topic.

Spoiler

That was via e-mail, between 08/04/2019 and 21/05/2019. Basically, I asked him for suggestions about stock MIDIs from either doom.wad or doom2.wad for the e1mxb maps and he told me I should forget them (for these new-fangled maps) and go for new-fangled Jimmidis. Then I asked Jimmy about suggestions and he suggested me his MIDIs from plutmidi.wad, because he had tried to emulate Robert Prince and the TNT soundtrack with some of those tracks. Knowing this, because Jimmy has composed hundreds and hundreds of MIDIs and I had to delimitate the number of songs to choose from to a reasonable amount, I asked John Romero again for suggestions delimited to the five Jimmidis of plutmidi.wad. He also suggested me music from Buckethead. Ghoul 1 from Ghoul and Endless Experiments from Fourneau Cosmique, for e1m4b and e1m8b, respectively.

However, however... I have rechecked my e-mail and recalled that I mentioned him indirectly in the second e-mail I have written in my life to John Romero, 18/12/2018, concerning Sigil. This may or may not have influenced him somehow / somewhat. Most likely not, because he would have noticed Jimmy anyway, as, come on, Jimmy is famous and well known in the scene.

At any rate, certain member of the Doomworld forums has insinuated his intention of creating a custom music pack for this future release. [1]

Not played enough wads to give a top 10 yet. But this list is useful as a guideline for me as to which wads should be on my hitlist

1 point: dtwidmus.wad*. A music PWAD created by Mr. Freeze for the DTWiD project which overrides every music lump of Doom Registered / The Ultimate Doom, except for D_INTROA, the title screen music when using OPL playback. It even imitates the original layout of duplicated songs, so to speak, of the original (D_E2M9 = D_E3M1, D_E1M7 = D_E2M5 = D_E3M5, D_E2M3 = D_INTER...), except for D_E1M6 and D_E3M6, they are different songs now. But the DTWiD project deemed it didn’t fit the atmosphere of the game, so it wasn’t included in the final official release of the megawad. Anyway, the point is because I’ll use this to accompany retroeps.wad and, perhaps, jptr_v40.wad.

Of course, substract 1 point from plutmidi.wad to accommodate the new inclusion.

Damn... Choosing 10 wads only is not enough considering the amount of creativity this community produced. This will be hard but here goes...

10 Points - Hellbound. (Mainly because this brought me back to Doom.)

9 Points - Reverie.

8 Points - Sunlust.

7 Points - Winter's Fury.

6 Points - Eternal Doom.

5 Points - ZPack (If you get over the jump/crouch issue. You will find it entertaining.)

4 Points - Valiant.

3 Points - Dark Encounters.

2 Points - Mayhem 17. (My favorite Mayhem.)

1 Point - Memento Mori 2.

(Granted that's basically my scope of reputable WADs, e.g. Scythe 2/Hell Revealed/Memento Mori whatnot is still on my to-do list.)

Ok I'm playing through Speed of Doom for the first time right now since a week or so ago and I'm REALLY loving it.  I had no idea Josh Sealy co-authored this Megawad.  He partly made one of my favorite levels of all time "The Grotto" from CC4.  I may rescind my vote later if I keep enjoying this WAD this much.
