Incredible game. *SPOILER ALERT*

Recommended Posts

Generally, I consider myself a pretty jaded PC game player, but I am really looking forward to the release of Doom III. Usually, when you look at screenshots of games you find that when you get it on your computer, it doesn’t look as good. This is not because it’s of actual lower quality, but that the screenshot was chosen because of a certain cameral angle (that is either uncommon or too common) or hides any weak graphical elements of the game. Also, there is very little a screenshot can truly tell about a game’s gameplay. All in all this can sometimes lead to disappointment.

Doom III is different. Doom III is a sci-fi horror game so the setting is important, and I think Id did/is doing its job well. The environment is dark, scary, and provides for an incredible amount of suspense. Because of the lighting and general color scheme you can look at an area, think it’s clear, only to have something seemly pop up at you from nowhere. The quality of the textures is something out of Max Payne, though at this point the textures for 3D models (e.g.: you, other characters, and enemies) seem to be better developed than that of *some* of the rooms (after all this is only version 0.02). The character movement is very fluid and is much more realistic than the sometimes doll like movement in Hitman2, and the models are exactly like that seen in the officially released screens by Id. In fact, I would go as far as to say that it is the creatures in their movement and detail that are the most impressive. As far as lighting and particle effects go, they too are above par. The sound effects at this point are surprisingly well developed in quality, realism, and effectiveness (nothing like hearing something creepy as you turn a corner).

What you’ve seen in the screenshots and what you’ve seen in Doom3 movies is absolutely what you will get. The only thing players should worry about is their specs and whether or not that damn zombie thing with the freaky red eyes is going to get up again. And if it does, it’s not going to wait to get up to hit you. God, I really hate that.

Oh yes one more thing, yes, all the blood I saw was red. And when things get messy, it goes everywhere.

damn spoiler ;-)

but you're right in all your thoughts! the alpha looks and especially sounds incredible good. this one is really worth every hard earned € :)

this alpha burns my hardware - but i think the final will run smoother on my system; otherwise everyone who likes to play d3 will have to buy a new system. maybe the hw vendors will bundle their new stuff with a copy of d3 just to show how good their latest hw is.

Ahh, so true. That's exactly what happened to me when Quake 3 came out back in '99. :(
