DSC Posted November 4, 2019 Just a thing I came up with to have some fun. Lets share some map stereotypes based on their number. For example: -MAP 01- very short and easy; -MAP 07- Dead Simple Clone; -MAP 31- extremely gimmicky; -MAP 32- slaughterfest; -MAP 21- short and easy; -MAP 30- IOS fight. I still have to play many wads and notice any traits that maps with the same number seen to share, but if you know more than me, feel free to contribute! 4 Share this post Link to post
galileo31dos01 Posted November 4, 2019 02-06: usually forgotten or not in those top-5 lists 12-19: includes TNT track(s) 21: mainly berserk after dead exit 27: (in CPs) largest/hardest or most stressful map, high tier weaponry from or close the start 29: epic, linear, casual buildup, never the hardest map 33: "I didn't know SoD had a map 33" [@Scotty, 2019] 9 Share this post Link to post
maxmanium Posted November 4, 2019 MAP01: (Semi) Fast-paced, gives a first impression for the wad MAP02: Pace settles down, more consistent gameplay with rest of wad MAP15: Usually somewhat grandiose or complex, sometimes with gimmicky secret exit 4 Share this post Link to post
NuMetalManiak Posted November 5, 2019 MAP28 or MAP29 usually made into a memorable slaughtermap or memorable superlong map (or both) to be a penultimate challenge to a MAP30 which somehow turns out to be less fun 8 Share this post Link to post
Havoc Crow Posted November 7, 2019 (edited) MAP21-MAP29: Sudden Slaughtermap Syndrome Somewhere in this range, the difficulty and the monster count/density abruptly skyrockets. May cause ragequits. 6 Share this post Link to post
ReaperAA Posted November 7, 2019 Map 1: Short and easy(most of the times). Map 7: Dead Simple clone. Map 11: Change of scene and pace. Usually easier than Map 10. Map 15: Usually a big adventurous map with a dumb hidden secret exit. Map 21: Short, low monster count but low resources to deal with. Map 29: Epic penultimate map and frankly much more interesting than Map 30. Map 30: A typical IoS map. 3 Share this post Link to post
Polri Posted November 8, 2019 Maps 1-15: quite a lot of orange, either in textures, skies or both. (This phenomenon started with Alien Vendetta, I guess) Maps 11-14: mountains, caves and rocks Map 20: very explicit portal to hell, usually including a death exit Maps 23-26: at least one of these will not be really hellish. The author ran out of ideas for fire and brimstone maps and decided that a library in a sewer also qualifies as "hellish" :) Map 32: it's slaughter time!!!!! 3 Share this post Link to post

Doomkid Posted November 9, 2019 Old deathmatch wads always contain an Entryway remake. Bonus points for a Hangar and Dead Simple remake! No specific map number but I think this still counts. 5 Share this post Link to post
dmslr Posted November 9, 2019 Map06 is the latest for your first play of a wad 1 Share this post Link to post

Mk7_Centipede Posted November 10, 2019 death exit before boss/final levels. its a (somewhat) common trope not specific to any map # imo. 0 Share this post Link to post
