Is UV-Max (on Doom 1 at least) really terrible?

Recommended Posts

For context, Jobst was referring to competitive UV-maxing to beat standing records.

Iirc Ancalagon mentioned he liked doing e4m2 (you'll never guess why) but yeah, a lot of Doom 1 runs are full of stuff that serious maxers traditionally complain about, many related to the much greater prominence of the single shotgun. It's rounded out by a circus tour of oddities, like e2m8 being entirely rolling for rocket damage, e4m1 placing outsized importance on baron bunching, and more.

Also there is the issue of Doom 1's often dated, questionable design. Many of its maps don't offer much enjoyment for modern palates. All maxes of any sort, excluding trivial degenerate cases (e.g. map exit is blocked off by a really slow timer), run a serious risk of becoming annoying at sufficiently optimized paces. Undesirable bottlenecks, the magnitude and nature of RNG, and unexpected peculiarities are all laid bare. Great maps are by no means immune -- and standards certainly change in a run context -- but positive qualities can make bashing your head against a map tolerable.

Damn, that was a cool run.

What is generally the most hated Doom 1 map for speedrunners, and why?

I've just watched Karl Jobst's latest video, mostly related about how terrible UV-Max is, at least on Doom 1.

Ugh, I don't like when "popular" "content creators" post videos about things they know very little about for this very reason.

Is it true?

UV Max is the best category IMO, killing everything makes the game more fun and less annoying, like missing a jump in UV Speed would be. Beating Max records is really hard since most of them are really good. Doom 1 in particular doesn't have the SSG so it's more tactical and random, making doing IL runs more difficult. That being said, if you aren't trying to go for the world records, it's without a doubt the most fun, since you learn every nook and cranny of every map, and the best part of Doom is killing enemies, right?

I like the video but I think he was getting at single segment map runs are no fun with rng. Practicing full UV Max runs in like episode marathons looks way more entertaining to attempt.

Can confirm, definitely is more entertaining doing the whole thing. However also hurts a lot more when some of the convoluted steps don't work out on a really good attempt. (Looking at you E1M5 red key timed door skip!)

Running a marathon is ok but routing the whole thing and making sure you won't forget details while running is zzz.
