Not to be that guy, but both of these refer to slightly different things.

 

A program is a specific set of instructions, whereas an app (i.e. an application) is a piece of software that helps users perform a task.

 

An emoticon is a typographical symbol derived from ASCII code (like :-) or similar) while an emoji is one of a fixed number of actual graphical images, 1311 in total in Unicode 12.0. They look like this: 🙂

@Bauul Sure, but colloquially they are often used interchangeably these days. Also, remember when Windows XP had All Programs in the Start Menu while Windows 10 has an Apps category instead? Same deal with folks referring to any reaction face as an emoji.
