for most people, it's not strictly about the medkits and hitler. People generally like to see their favorite past games remain intact without having the original content changed. If they were to change the zombiemans hair from green to blonde or change the imps from brown and grey, there would plenty of people complaining about the changes because "it's not faithful to the original content".

 

How much do you want to bet if Square Enix decided to change Cloud's hair from blonde to brown that there would be an outrage over the change? You could also ask the Sonic fanbase about why they hated Sega when they changed Sonic's eyes to green. :p

 

EDIT: I have no issues with minor changes of the medkits and hitler being removed. The only major issue I have is the wolfenstein elements being removed only because the way those secret levels were designed were meant to mimic the geometry of wolfenstein's level design. It would've been better to completely remove those secret levels with new secret levels.

Lots of people think that the Wolf3D stuff should be un-altered since it's now legal in Germany but I'd imagine the issue is much more complicated than people make it out to be. 

 

They wouldn't go to the effort of making entirely new assets if they didn't have a good reason for it.

My actual answer is, people enjoy complaining on the internet, even if it’s not at all worth it or makes no sense whatsoever. Everyone knows the original, unedited iwads aren’t going anywhere, and will still be easily found if one so chooses... but an excuse to have a big, dumb, pointless fight? Why not*, amirite?

I don't mind it when it is done right.

Pills in he medikit box look ugly and stupid, but it's also very negligible of a change you won't notice much after a while. Green crosses are better, and don't steps on anyone's toes when it comes to legal problems.

 

On the nazi stuff, I think the recent port did it the right way. The censoring was minor and non intrusive, just changing them into a generic army, removing the swastika, and Hitler is now the less offensive Statmeister. I absolutely love that they kept the soldiers intact too, only changing their alert sounds. The levels just don't feel right when they're populated by zombies instead of those big blue nazi idiots.

Because it's a safe way to make the game available in as many markets (and thus to as many players) as possible.

What about China and skeletons? Remember when World of Warcraft, Dota 2, and League of Legends all had to make artistic changes for eligibility on the Chinese market? How are Revenants still untouched?

we already know they do it to as a result of market pressures. my question is why so many players care about a couple of spites and textures when the way we play the game now is already so different anyway

It's a really controversial topic. Some prefer the originals while others don't care, and game companies have to balance that with laws etc.

For the Medikit issue: It's because the pill looks really dumb.

 

For the Wolf3d issue: The whole point of the secret levels was that it was a homage to their earlier Wolfenstein 3D game. When you take away all the Nazi stuff (Which I would also vehemently argue was not intended as a positive portrayal) you may as well not even have the secret levels in-game.

If you guys "really" cared about censorship, you'd have to play Doom below v1.4 as the swastika easter egg in E1M4 was removed but i highly doubt anyone still plays v1.2 and then jumps to The Ultimate Doom to finish the rest of the episodes. Just sayin'...

 

My point is that the Doom games have been censored in some form starting as early as 1994 (back then it was only Doom 1). The fans learned to deal with it then. Why can't we deal with it now?

I'm still playing the older versions of Doom, especially now that Chocolate is adding support for the last couple of versions (0.99-1.1 is still WIP for instance).

Yeah it's annoying when it happens, especially when it's done very poorly by obliterating the said content, similar to how BFG Edition did, but devs also have to deal with legal issues since not all countries allow free depictions of such content, especially when not for historical purposes.
