Antroid Posted January 23, 2020 Well damn, I couldn't resist and looked at those and I don't know if I should even bother playing the game now, you just spoiled me on most of everything that happens in it D: 2 Share this post Link to post
Martin-CAI Posted January 23, 2020 (edited) I remember avoiding every type of spoiler for D2016 and seeing the spider mastermind as the final boss, for example, was completely glorious. So I'm trying to do the same from now, even though I think that with this new one they spoiled quite more than the previous. 1 Share this post Link to post
Archi Posted January 23, 2020 I do. There's only one time to experience surprise of something actually new to the game, and it's better to do it while playing the game and not watching/reading about it. 1 Share this post Link to post
MrGlide Posted January 23, 2020 To answer this I must accurately quote the great John D. Carmack "Ask not what porn can do for you, but what can story do for porn?". Story will be neat icing on the cake and a way to explain the setting, but what I'm eager for is skilled combat, with scenarios that push you to think and learn. All the story in the world doesn't answer the question of, was it worth conquering? 0 Share this post Link to post
seed Posted January 23, 2020 Not at all. I actually like knowing as much as I can before jumping into... everything. I want to know ahead, if possible, whether I will enjoy the said thing or not, rather than waste my time with it only to realize halfway through that it actually sucks. 0 Share this post Link to post
Gez Posted January 23, 2020 I'm not gonna play that game anyway because my comp is already too weak to play Doom 2016 and I don't imagine Eternal will have lower requirements.* So spoil away everything with abandon. 1 Share this post Link to post
Eurisko Posted January 23, 2020 (edited) Me, I care. Someone said earlier it's hard not to watch the preview stuff and even I have watched little bits of those "new gameplay" vids. However, I'm not watching huge chunks and anything about the story I'm trying to avoid if I can. I just want as many surprises this game is bound to have as unspoiled as possible. 0 Share this post Link to post

I have the same attitude to this, really. 0 Share this post Link to post
silentzorah Posted January 23, 2020 I don't care about spoilers, because I'm not buying the game. 0 Share this post Link to post
TheRedTide Posted January 23, 2020 As long as no one spoils the actual plot of the game, I'm okay with the lore itself being spoiled. 0 Share this post Link to post
Job Posted January 23, 2020 Nope. Because it's simply interesting reading material and until I actually play the game, which provides the contextual framework. 2 Share this post Link to post
Zemini Posted January 23, 2020 I do not like being spoiled because I have no self control. Someone posts new lore codex info I jump on it like a fly to shit. Now if it is something leaked unofficially (or the game just gets released) then I will actively avoid the community sites until I complete the game. As far as movies and tv shows go I tend to avoid spoilers for the ones I care about. GoT is one example because you never know when someone is going to die and that creates a thrilling experience. Too bad the show ended the way it did. 2 Share this post Link to post
BBQgiraffe Posted January 23, 2020 "Story in a game is like a story in a porn movie. It's expected to be there, but it's not that important" - John Carmack 2 Share this post Link to post
Mortrixs19 Posted January 23, 2020 I will just avoid spoilers of things that I find important or interesting like the Identity of DS, the origin of the Marauder etc. If I need a bit more of context I'll just watch some random Doomtuber who spends 30 hours searching for every bit of lore 0 Share this post Link to post
Cruduxy Pegg Posted January 23, 2020 I don't care about lore but I hate game play spoilers so.. There is a reason I ignored most trailers and game play vids. 0 Share this post Link to post

It's one the dumbest things ever uttered by a game developer in a long a time and it's something that has been proven wrong time and again. Take Rage for instance, the main complaint that people had about the game is that the plot sucked and that's why it was neither critically acclaimed nor a success of sales. 6 Share this post Link to post
Linguica Posted January 23, 2020 Two of the biggest and most lucrative games of the 2010s were Minecraft and Fortnite, which have no story to speak of. The biggest critical darling of the 2010s was Dark Souls, which intentionally hid / obscured the lore and story and made people work for it. Maybe the lesson to learn is to not make your game's story like the story of a porn movie (i.e., pointless and pro forma) but instead to either excise it entirely or else put in an honest effort to make it interesting. 5 Share this post Link to post
RaikohZX Posted January 23, 2020 There's also the fact that ultimately one can attribute Carmack's quote to his preferences in particular, given the massive dump he took over Tom Hall and the then-preexisting content up to that point in the original game's development just to make it more arcade-like. Every time someone uses that damn Carmack quote it feels like yet another case of using a lack of context to justify bullshit. 2 Share this post Link to post
Hunting4r2d2 Posted January 23, 2020 Somewhat, but I don't mind being spoiled for the first 3 hours of a 20 hour game. 0 Share this post Link to post
DuckReconMajor Posted January 23, 2020 (edited) If there's some big plot twist I don't want to know that, though I'm not too upset if it happens. But when folks refuse to watch trailers and gameplay videos and such, I can't relate to that, but I respect that decision. I remember reading about some study where people enjoyed a story more when it was spoiled for them. Edited January 23, 2020 by DuckReconMajor 2 Share this post Link to post

I will have to disagree with you there. Reason RAGE ended up sucking was more than just plot. I mean (to keep it short) it was basically Borderlands but without RPG elements or reasons to replay it. 0 Share this post Link to post
qdash Posted January 24, 2020 Absolutely don't care, because I'm here not for story. 0 Share this post Link to post
SaladBadger Posted January 24, 2020 I've realized recently that the story is probably the part of the game I'm the least interested in, and id's done a really good job of things. If you want the story, it's there, you can enjoy it, but those who aren't as interested, you can just shove it to the side. it's a backdrop to establish a setting, not much different than the original doom in some ways. So no, I wouldn't say I am that bothered by spoilers. 0 Share this post Link to post
