I mean, its not a joke, when most people use it as legitimate criticism. I wonder who originated that quote anyway. Probably some review from back in the day. I'm just tired of seeing it regurgitated.

 

On another note, I voted Doom 2, but that may change when eternal comes out :P

Couldn't vote Doom PSX so I voted for Doom. However Doom 2 is a great choice for being the most commonly used base of maps and mods. But even after all these years I still can't bring myself to finish the game, but I don't mind playing Ultimate Doom 5 times a year, or however many times I run through it annually.

I thought nothing could touch the base gameplay/weapons/monsters of Doom 2 but I played Doom 64 Retribution recently (it is like a remastered version of Doom 64 on GZDoom) and it touched it. It touched it good!

It isn't a joke because:

• Jokes are mean't to be funny. This one isn't because it has been an actual argument
• In addition that, its also an overused argument, just like how asking what the best doom game is, is an overused question

Doom 64 for me, but I don't necessarily consider one game objectively better than the other, just different takes on the concept behind the games.

Edit: also Doom 1 is the best game in the franchise when played vanilla. Doom 2 has all the mods though, hmmmmm...

I think that all of the Doom games were and still are influential. But Final Doom is my favorite

I'm stuck in a three-way with Doom, Doom 2, and Doom 2016.

Doom 2 is Doom but with more stuff and is the base of the modding community, Doom 1 has overall better level design than Doom 2, and Doom 2016 is great in its own right. I might replace that with Eternal though with the amount of stuff they add.

 

I'm voting on Doom 2, because without it I doubt I'd be on Doomworld.
