I've always wanted to see what everybody thinks about each idtech1 game.

I wonder...Does D64 and Chex 3 really count as idtech1 games? What about HacX and the original CQ, do they really count since they're really just TCs? If you're gonna mention QC3 then you might as well mention Harmony too.

I would say they do since they're still using idtech1 engines.  Modified idtech1 in the case of Doom 64... but Hexen is a modified idtech1, too :-P

Anyway, definitely Doom 64 for me.

If we're nitpicking, TNT and Plutonia are the same game (Final Doom).

I don't see them as having one overall best game, so I'm gonna split it up:

  • Best gameplay: Doom II (the extra monsters really help)
  • Best nostalgia: Doom (still got the best songs and levels)
  • Best ambience: Heretic (I just love that high-color fantasy theme)
  • Best capabilities: Hexen (polyobjects, hubs, scripts)
  • Best campaign: Strife (good sense of place, variety of gameplay, strong character progression)

It's possible with Chex Quest 3 to recreate all the others except Doom 64, so that's the technical winner. :p

I'm counting the ones that where launched as physical games, I know that CQ3 was a downloadable game, but I still count it.

Hm, somewhat tend to agree, but this is how mine looks ultimately :p - based purely on what I have in fact played, hence why Strife, Chex, and so on are not present:

- Best gameplay: Plutonia.

- Best capabilities: Doom 64/Hexen.

- Best ambiance: Doom 64/Hexen.

- Best nostalgia: Doom.

- Best campaign: Hexen.

I think if the question is very much in regards to the original games... but assuming I can play them on GZdoom for those benefits because without I just wouldn't play these games... I'd go with Ultimate Doom. Doom 2 may have had better combat with the SSG and additional enemies, and its had some fantastic megawads made for it, but, I think Ultimate Doom is a better play experience. It has more impressive levels to it, and even if the boss levels are overly simple and easy I'll take them over the Icon of Sin every day of infinity.

Really? What about Ultimate Doom?

Doom 93 is the original and the one that changed the world. That makes it the most badass in my eyes.

In terms of playing, Doom II wins. Heretic has my favorite music in all idtech1.

Heretic would literally be my number 2 pick if mods were allowed to be considered. The Wayfarer's Tome is such a great gameplay rebalance, that feels 100% authentic, that when put together with the other things Heretic does well (great music as already said, and level design that starts modestly but gets pretty epic later on) really transforms the experience of the game and shows how good it probably should have been. But yes, originally the gameplay holds it back.

For me, it is:

- Best gameplay: Plutonia.

- Best capabilities: Doom 64/Hexen.

- Best ambiance: Hexen.

- Best nostalgia: Doom II.

- Best campaign: Doom 64

- Best for Mods: Doom II.

Overall best = Doom II
