Spectre01 Posted February 19, 2020 It's a difficult choice because I like all the SP Quake games for different reasons. I'll go against the retro grain and say Quake 4. I was pleasantly surprised when replaying it not to long ago, and feel like it has the best core combat and enemies which are interesting to fight. Sure, the levels are entirely linear, with little in the way of exploration, but I also enjoyed the story-focused experience. It also has the best boss encounters in the series: Sarge, Network Guardian, and Makron are pretty damn good FPS bosses, which are often underwhelming. 0 Share this post Link to post
Toilet_Wine_Connoisseur Posted February 19, 2020 QUAKE 1 and its Expansions are incredible. Quake II bores me to tears. HAve not played Quake IV (yet) 1 Share this post Link to post
Juza Posted February 20, 2020 There's only one Quake game, what's the use in asking that? 4 Share this post Link to post

ReaperAA Posted February 20, 2020 (edited) 8 hours ago, Avoozl said: Quake 2 always for me. To me Quake 1 felt lacking in variety, also the bosses are a joke. I feel the missions packs were much better than the base game. Agreed. Quake 1 is fun, but it lacks variety, both in the aesthetics and the monster department (well Quake 2 doesn't have much variety as Doom 2 either, but still more than Quake 1). Quake 2 also has the Railgun and the BFG ;) I feel like if Quake 2 had retained the Lovecraftian style, it would have been regarded as the better game by most people. Also agree that the mission packs of Quake 1 are better than the base game (especially Scourge of Armagon). However, when it comes to custom content, Quake 1 beats Quake 2 by a fair margin. LUISDooM Posted February 20, 2020 Quake 1 because it's the one closer to DooM gameplay wise. Quake 3 is the close second. I remember playing the PSX version of Quake 2 a lot years ago (it was the first Quake game I've played), but when trying to play it now I just go back to Q1. 0 Share this post Link to post
TwinBeast Posted February 21, 2020 Quake Live. Probably mentioned this somewhere earlier too, but I like it for the chat and voice chat. Although if there's no chatting, then it's not so much fun to play it. Quake 2 for singleplayer. Probably played Quake 1 through just as many times, so I guess it's pretty good too. Weapons feel better in Quake 2. Also liked being able to switch the weapon handedness. 0 Share this post Link to post
A Nobody Posted February 22, 2020 Quake 1 is good, but I feel that it's a tech demo. The game was originally going to be an rpg, but then id decided to make it like Doom. 0 Share this post Link to post
hybridial Posted February 22, 2020 Basing just purely on the original campaigns, I would say Quake 2. I actually think its a great game that kind of gets underrated a lot. Quake definitely makes out with a hell of a modding legacy though. 1 Share this post Link to post
Doom_Dude Posted February 22, 2020 (edited) Quake 2!!! I fucking love the atmosphere and the architecture and the enemies and weps are good too. Back in the day, when I first got a cable hookup, my ISP had a Quake 2 server, so that was fun for awhile too. Really prefer the singleplayer tho. Played the hell out of the game and expansions and a crapload of SP maps. The first user made levels I played I got off of PC Gamer magazine's that came with CD's loaded with maps for various games. Good times. I edited for Quake II for awhile. Even made a few maps that never got released and are now lost. Good experience plastering brushes together. I recently started playing Quake II again using Yamagi and got inspired by those first couple of maps, especially those outside areas and made some textures for Doom and started a derelict Strogg base in my megawad that the UAC came across and kinda reclamated... Not 100% sure if I'll keep it in among the main Vilecore II levels or move to a secret map spot. Leaning towards keeping it where it is. Haven't shown it yet and maybe I will just keep it under wraps. 1 Share this post Link to post
DuckReconMajor Posted February 22, 2020 I managed to get into the closed beta of Quake Live, and as the gaming-masochist I am, loved getting slaughtered each match and coming in last each game. Open beta happened and I started winning some matches which was disappointing. I got some trophy or achievement or something for being in closed beta, but the email I used for the account was deactivated and I forgot and my account got deleted. I was upset at first but I look these days it looks like they've moved to steam and the original game is gone, so no matter anyway. Also another fun anecdote, in my technical drawing class, we'd get on the computers and play LAN games of Counter Strike after we got our work done. Some parent complained and the teacher had to delete CS, but first we had one last round in which the teacher (an older, unsuspecting guy) came on for the first time and slaughtered all of us. Anyway, this left us only the much bloodier Quake III to play. Good times. For single player, I love Quake 1, tried so many times to get into Quake 2 with no luck (the RTX version is great, and the furthest I've gotten). Quake 4 is in my library I'll play it at some point. 0 Share this post Link to post
