Old-Doomguy Posted February 21, 2020 Hai! I've just now gotten back to Doom, I haven't really played it since the 90s. Anyway I want to be a nostalgia nerd but there are some things I believe could enchance the game, especially for the younger audience (I'm going to have my 6 year old play this soon) Is there a sourceport that retains original mechanics ie no vertical mouselook, no jump, no crouch etc BUT ALSO ADDS Dynamic lightning (as good as can be in the engine) Dynamic shadows (as good as can be in the engine) Dynamic muzzle flashes I.E some more modern eye-candy only. Any ideas? 0 Share this post Link to post
ETTiNGRiNDER Posted February 21, 2020 The naive answer would be: use GZDoom and turn off the mouselook/jump/crouch/other things that bother you options? But that depends on whether you consider "original mechanics" to also mean strict demo compatibility or not. I think every other port that adds eye candy stuff has things like jump/crouch/etc and broken demo compatiblity too (k8vavoom, 3DGE, etc). Doomsday might not, but I feel like Doomsday has been slowly but surely losing relevance these days much like Doom Legacy did, worth a look if you don't like the other options I suppose. 1 Share this post Link to post
D4NUK1 Posted February 21, 2020 Vadadoom maybe? It's pretty eyecandy too. 0 Share this post Link to post
Redneckerz Posted February 21, 2020 You asked something very similar prior in January. My garbage post in terms of formatting may help out. 49 minutes ago, Old-Doomguy said: Is there a sourceport that retains original mechanics ie no vertical mouselook, no jump, no crouch etc Chocolate or Crispy (Crispy brings some visual enchancements) 49 minutes ago, Old-Doomguy said: BUT ALSO ADDS Dynamic lightning (as good as can be in the engine) GZDoom/LZDoom/Vavoom/DoomsDay. Dynamic lights are relatively common in OpenGL based ports. 49 minutes ago, Old-Doomguy said: Dynamic shadows (as good as can be in the engine) Depends what one means. Doom3 style stencil shadows are in Vavoom and K8Vavoom. All other high end stuff is GZDoom these days. 49 minutes ago, Old-Doomguy said: Dynamic muzzle flashes This is likely not an in-engine visual feature, but it can be done by a mod. 49 minutes ago, Old-Doomguy said: I.E some more modern eye-candy only. elend Posted February 22, 2020 Check out "Vanilla Essence" for GzDoom. You can customize it (along with GzDoom for stuff like controls) absolutely to your liking and the results look oldschool, yet... updated. Combine that with something like SmoothDoom and SmoothTextures and it looks god damn amazing. 1 Share this post Link to post
