Who's the architect of the buildings in Doom 2?

Recommended Posts

Lol some of the structures don't make any sense. They wouldn't have purpose even if the hell invasion had never happened. Why a building full of exploding barrels? Why a building with super thin walkways? Why a giant circle of death? What?

Would you live in a house designed by Romero and Petersen?

Don't blame them, it's not their fault that hell is seeping into our reality thus twisting buildings into a surreal mockery of what they used to be.

If you're referring to Barrels of Fun and The Chasm, both of those are in hell.

Why do the demons have explosive barrels on hell? Do they drink it? Do they use it to fuel cyberdemons and other mechanical monsters?

This is so confusing.

To mess with you. It is Hell after all.

This is exactly the mystique that "renders" the worlds interesting. It's an art to hint at anything more realistic without destroying the individualized perception / interpretation of the thing portrayed.

You have entered deeply into the infested starport. But something is wrong. The monsters have brought their own reality with them, and the starport's technology is being subverted by their presence.

Ahead, you see an outpost of Hell, a Fortified Zone. If you can get past it, you can penetrate into the haunted heart of the starbase and find the controlling switch which holds the Earth's population hostage.

To mess with your mind and perception of reality ofc. The presence of the demons warps reality after all.

My theory is that part of Hell is trying to convince you that you aren't really in hell.  The Mastermind tries to convince you that you are still on Earth and in normal buildings.  But hell's idea of normal is a little twisted.  But maybe that's hell's intent and it just wants to drive you mad.

eh, that's just how corporate management works. you have to approve each building plan (often up to the highest execs), and each layer of managers changes something in that plan to show that they're really "do some work", not simply sitting there. because most managers are incompetent idiots, that's what you have in the end. start with "let's build a simple square building", and you will end up with "circle of death" at the time the project approved. and then you simply cannot change anything and have to build what you told to. Doom just being very realistic in that aspect, and got realistic maps as a consequence.

What the fuck is up with those Mario games? Floating question mark blocks? Uh, HELLO Nintendo! Have you heard of that little thing called gravity?!

And mushrooms have almost no calorific content!

The planning is so poor in my city that Map13: Downtown looks reasonable. They'll let you throw up all the ugly brown rectangles you want as long as you've got cash.

I thought the demons gradually subverted the architecture. In the manual it does describe the demons subverting the reality around them.

I just wanna know why the demons felt the need to place all those weapons, ammo and powerups in Hell. They don't use them, and all it did was make it easier for Doomguy to defeat them!

Demons are fascinated by Doomguy's items and kinda worship them: they don't understand how a gun works or is used, but they respect the pain it inflicts upon them. Since they are demons, and therefore the embodiment of hatred and violence, weapons are like (un)holy icons to them, they adore tools of destruction and carnage.

This is actually canon in Sandy Petersen levels.

That also explains why there are zombies hanging out in hell, even in the deeper parts.

Weird how demons don't understand how weapons work but they do understand cybernetics.

Who said they do, though.

just because they have adapted cybernetics doesn't necessarily imply that they know about them or made them, they could've been created fully formed that way.

Imagine being an Arachnotron on your first day of driving sheesh.

EPIC

We here on the council of wasted space appreciate your contribution.

ON TOPIC: Doom 2 features abstract layouts that rely more on gameplay elements going to the forefront as opposed to realism being the main focus; why is there no bathrooms in the UAC base is there some future technology I don't know about? He doesn't know how to use the shells lol.

Ditto. For all we know, they might as well be a bunch of primitive creatures using tech but unable to grasp it in the slightest.
