This is Woof! 12.0.0 (Sep 15, 2023)

Does Woof support surround/5.1 sound?

If it does, how do you enable it?

I am fairly certain no source port for doom will support surround and all will use the same stereo as every other doom port. I cannot say 100%, but I have not seen that as a talking feature, particularly when it is not hardly open source as a technology. If you want virtual 5.1 surround, look up Windows Sonic, Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, or HeSuVi (this last one is free and decent)

Well, actually, since our switch to OpenAL as our sound backend it is very much possible to add true 3d sound. In fact, we currently need to apply a trick to calculate plain stereo separation in order to sound like any other source port. There was some talk about implementing this as an option (at least GZDoom already has it), but no work has started on it yet.

wait wait, I have kind of a dumb question: is it possible to transfer over old config files from like 11.1.1 woof to this new version? I got my wads that are saved and the settings set up to my liking to that version that I don’t wanna do it all over again, is that actually possible?

Config files (.cfg) and savegames (.dsg) should still be compatible. In any case, you can try yourself and see if it works. Do make backups though!

Latest version crashes with KDIKDIZD. That or the weapon doesn't exist.

Edit: Ignore the above, i'm stupid.

Works fine on my end. What do you mean by "That or the weapon doesn't exist"? Are you using doom2.wad as the iwad?

You are right, i must have done something wrong before. I updated again and it's now working.

I hope there's a Strict Mode toggle key, and IDDT cheat shortcuts (I can't find it in the cheats part, or I'm somehow not seeing it?)

We don't have strict mode toggle key, only menu option.

The Woof menu is slightly different from DSDA-Doom, so we've cut the IDDT to fit all the cheats on one page. What if we replace the "Computer Area Map" cheat with IDDT? It seems to have both of these cheats is redundant.

I think maybe having a strict mode toggle key is good? I don't know about others but I usually turn off strict mode and use IDDT to check the maps to see what I left etc., so it's more convenient for me, but not sure whether it's easy to make it in.

Yeah, I feel with IDDT, should cut the Computer Area Map cheat although they technically serve different purposes...

2 things we found out lately:

(1) It seems on coop, you can see other player's messages. For example, P1 picks up something, P2 can see it. That was not the case.

(2) It seems even on vanilla compatibility coop, it still has translucency.

Just to mention, for Woof, you can enable Strict mode by launching Woof by -strict command line with the help of a batch file.

Why do you use strict mode if you are cheating anyway?

For the reference, enabling strict mode is not recorded in any way in the demo, and by default Woof settings are "strict". Therefore, if you have not changed the default settings, strict mode is not needed.

I'm not sure I understand what "That was not the case" means? This didn't happen in earlier versions of Woof? In MBF? In Vanilla?

Vanilla compatibility doesn't mean that non-Vanilla features are automatically disabled -- unless you are in strict mode, that is. Or, if e.g. translucency is enabled by a DEHACKED patch.

There is a certain linedef flag that prevents the linedefs that have it from showing up on computer map, so logically computer map and IDDT are different. IDDT draws all linedefs while computer map is limited (sometimes mappers use the concealing flag for linedefs related to secrets to prevent players from seeing them on computer map).

That's not what I need.

So, if there's a map that I can easily to miss a monster, I would check the map if I found that I missed something at the end of the run before restarting, so that I can have a better knowledge about where the monsters are hiding next time. I know a couple of other people who would do this, but yeah, it's kinda like for my own convenience sake, so it's not a feature that is in much need.

Hmm, I think in the previous version of Woof, you wouldn't get messages from other players. However, I can't say it for sure. All I can say it's that I'm very sensitive to changes, so I FEEL it wasn't the case. Previous version I used was 10.5.1. If needed, I can get the older version and test to give you the definite answer for this.

Hmm, I'm not sure what I did wrong yesterday. We were running a vanilla WAD, but we probably didn't put in any type of autoload or DEHACKED. Also I'm not sure whether we were in strict mode because it seems Woof doesn't enforce strict mode when recording a demo? I need to check this again.

I know, that's what I'm referring to. I need that cheat to clean up disappearing lines after picking up Computer Area Map, so I said they are different. Honestly, Woof is not the go-to sourceport for these things, so I don't really feel annoyed despite these minor inconveniences to me.

Yes, please. This would be very helpful.

No, strict mode isn't automatically enabled when recording a demo.

I have just removed the single key cheat for IDBEHOLDA and made the single key cheat for IDDT priority.

Hi, I want to get into Woof! because of its multiplayer capabilities, but...

Is there REALLY no way to change the resolution to something like 1920x1080?!? I want the game to look like DSDA-Doom, not like DOS, and the high resolution option still keeps 90% of the pixelation. It really hurts my eyes, looks extremely ugly, and makes the entire port unplayable for me. The same goes for the friends who I wanted to play with, they think it's awful as well and are no longer interested in playing Doom whatsoever. This is making me pull my hair out, I thought that there was finally a way to record multiplayer demos in Doom at an acceptable resolution, but apparently such technology is still decades away. Why is there no option to remove the pixelation in the first place? Is there some way to bypass it? Is it possible to easily code it in myself as a last resort, or would the entire thing have to be rewritten by an expert with a PhD in software engineering?

I would really appreciate any possible help, thank you in advance!

This is just how it is due to the port's philosophy. It's a port of WinMBF, itself a port of the original MBF, which just had the standard 320x200 and the "high res" (at the time) 640x400. I am not sure why no other non-ZDoom ports haven't fixed multiplayer, tho. Not enough demand?

I'm surprised as well about how there isn't a single modern source port that supports multiplayer demo recording. I mean, there is PrBoom+, but even playing alone on a local server was an unplayable experience. Woof! is the best alternative, but again, not many people can deal with the incredibly low resolution, I genuinely don't understand how some people can enjoy that pixelated nightmare (no offense to anyone who does, though).

So the question remains, how difficult would it be to create a fork of Woof! and add a proper resolution option? I feel like such a port would bring a lot more people into the Doom Multiplayer scene, because I know that it would certainly bring me and my three other friends into it.

You can try Chocolate Doom. It only supports 320x200. Now that's hardcore

Source port developers are usually happy to elaborate on such questions but you may want to reconsider your approach here. Coming in here and dumping all over the port probably won’t have the effect you think it will.

Keep your eye on Nugget Doom, a fork of Woof. It seems a 4x resolution option is in the works there!
