I love doom 1&2's sound design.

Goddamn do i love doom and doom 2's sound design, the stock effects are music to my ears and the sound the that the demons make when they gib: it just makes feeeelll good.

Agree with the SSG sound. I have no idea how they were able to come up with the perfect sound effect to evoke such a raw, primal response in me while playing the game... It's like I can feel my adrenaline reloading when the gun does. It's my siren song.

The plasma gun sound is kind of annoying. IMO they could have used something better for that.

You know I've seen many people say that about the plasma sound but I just don't see it. Yes, it's loud and intense, but that's why I love it. Maybe it's nostalgia but I couldn't enjoy Doom without it.

Yeah, I can't stand the plasma rifle sound either.  It sounds space-invadery to me, halfway between PC speaker and the sampled audio. Too obviously synthesized, I suppose.

 

The gibbing sounds though, I'm with you DRMMan, they are fantastic.

 

Of the monsters, the baron's roar is my favourite. I'm guessing it's a repitched elephant sample.  Love the revenant, former human and imp sounds as well.  Man, they're all good. So distinct.

That SSG sound is really something, imho. But what I also like really, really much are the Baron / Hell Knight sounds. That horrifying scream when they see you as well as the death sound. Amazing.

The Plasma rifle is so loud that it clips noticeably on most sound systems I’ve heard it through. I suppose it’s realistic to assume that, if a Plasma gun was ever invented it would be loud as fuck, but I’m just not into “ear drum torture porn”, lol.

 

Ive always had a mixed feeling on the SFX. I think the weapon sounds are a lot better in PSX Doom (dwango5). The monsters have way more distinct sounds on the PC though, they just make indistinct grumbles that all sound identical on PSX, so it’s truly a mixed bag.

The THUD that the demons and spectres make when they die (and hit the floor) is a nice touch.

I don't think there's anything more satisfying on a most basic level than the thick SSG sound combined with the fat Demon death sound. The Arachnotron's is also satisfyingly crunchy. And popping eyeball tomatoes with the SSG is fun too :)

 

On the topic of the Plasma Rifle, I actually love the brrrrrap it makes, it never seemed that loud to me. The PSX one, on the other hand, always seemed way louder to me, especially when a lot of them are overlaid on top of one another, it seems way more obnoxious than the original to me. It also sounds more generic, not that that bothers me too much but it is another slight negative in my book.

I will say that the Plasma Rifle never really feels like it's dealing much damage with the default sound to me unless I'm tearing through zombies or speeding towards some poor sucker in an arc and watching the curve of bolts gradually smash into 'em. :)


Shoutout to the item pickup sound, it hits different when you're running through hundreds of armour/health bonuses like in the Courtyard

At the risk of batting the beehive, the SSG reloading sound grates on the ears after enough repeat plays. Please don't murder me.

 

Plasma gun is great but I agree the sound is too damn loud.

I love the Hell Knight sound so much. I wish it was the Baron's sound because it makes the baron sound so whimpy lol.

Human subjectivity is so weird, man. To my ears, for whatever reason, both the Baron’s sight and death sound seem more powerful than those of the HK.. but I’m trying to work out why that is, and I simply can’t. I think it’s just down to association over the years..

Might be because the HK's are higher in pitch and sound "thinner" than the Baron's? Also the HK sounds more like a real animal (I read it actually did use modified jaguar sounds or something) whereas the Baron doesn't sound like an existing animal, and it doesn't sound human but it does sound like something unearthly with real anger. And its death sound... doesn't sound like anything lol.

Anyway yeah I've always thought the Baron's cry was one of the coolest sounds period.

The entire sound design of Doom is a work of art. Once you've played enough Doom, you hear a sound and immediately know what monster it is, how far it is, how long will it take for a projectile to reach you once you hear the attack sound etc.

 

Actually, I've been thinking for a while now about playing through Doom 1 using only fully IDDT cheated automap and sounds for orientation. Could be a refreshing experience.

I read that on an instinctive level, humans tend to interpret lower pitched sounds with large size, and large size with high power.  So maybe because the Baron has a lower pitched sound, it comes off as more powerful to you.  That mixed in with knowing that Barons are harder to kill probably explains your opinion.
