PATHOGEN.wad - An episode in isolation

Nice little episode, surprisingly good for what are essentially speedmaps. It was a while since I played some Doom 1 maps that required using the melee weapons. I encountered some problem in GZdoom 4.3.3, though:

 

E1M3: missing textures on linedefs 165 and 302.

Hi, this looked like a perfect pastime for a lazy sunday afternoon, so i fired it up and just had a blast. Flippin impressive work for only 6 days in both the looks and gameplay. Starts out pretty gentle but quickly the maps show more and more teeth, good stuff. I've recorded some FDA's in case you're interested.

 

Misc thoughts:

-E1M5 was the only map were i had some troubles with low ammo, perhaps due to the lack of a chainsaw (unless i missed it) like in the previous maps

-E1M5's Berserk cage trap is great however fairly cheesable with pre-knowledge, perhaps add a second teleport so you can't block the monsters from entering

-E1M6 i don't mind chainsaw gameplay but i felt like there were a few too many pinkies near the start, maybe a berserk would have been a better option instead

Well ill change those accordingly when I watch your demos, I didnt want the player stuck and forced to use the chainsaw, so you feedback is much appreciated there.

Updated the WAD to have Nues doomguy facemask, as well as some game play fixes based off Tourniquets feedback. Really loving the new and Covid free Doomguy, thanks Nue!

wow, this episode is really really nice but my favorite moment thusfar is the teleport on map 5 that puts you in a cage match with a baron super cool stuff

I could not sleep, so I played this. Suddenly it's 2 am oh God.

This is good, very well done, and it being on Doom 1 makes it sort of special, you know? I loved it.

This is a great set of maps!! Didn't quite beat it last night, the difficulty was ramping up there towards the end (which is awesome). A solid way to spend your quarantine time I'd say, bravo!

I just finished this and had a blast with it. Outstanding level quality for a speedmapping project. Considering the global lockdown will still be in effect for quite a while, maybe another episode or two may be in order...

Don't tempt me. I'm back at work though, but if full lockdown is initiated thats probably going to happen.

I don't have anything that wasn't already said. This was a solid mapset and I really enjoyed it.

 

The secrets were well made and the enemy/item placement was good. The little facemask DoomGuy was also a neat touch!

That was pretty fun. The final boss seems kinda easy because you can just get the Barons to infight it and take a lot of its health down, although the sporadic teleporting can be annoying. I like that the secrets by and large weren't obtuse or anything. Making good Doom secrets is harder than it would seem from most of the wads I've played.

I didn't have to fight the boss at all actually, suddenly it was just dead before I was even finished with the barons... xD Anyway, a very enjoyable experience. I also liked that many slime pools actually had no damage floors. With mask you are protected, I guess...

Thanks for playing everyone, regarding the boss fight its a bit of a mixed bag sometimes I cant get the barons to infight what so ever sometimes I dont even have to try. I like the fight though, when it works.

 

I've just uploaded this so hopefully it gets accepted, im kind of retarded so I probably did something wrong but we will see! Ive made some very minor changes such as fixing the bugs Caleb13 pointed out, and other small changes. I did however leave it mostly untouched as I want the 6 days work to stand on its own, adding polish to the levels would take away from that in my opinion.

 

Anyway, thanks for all the kind words! If I end up in lockdown I will most likely make another episode or 2, in saying that 1 episode was a huge mental toll in of itself. I guess we will see.

Playing on continuous HMP and having a blast so far. Just finished E1M9, which was a lot of fun!

 

One thing I love about your maps is shots like this, where there's all sorts of layers going on. So very cool:

Superb stuff!

A very memorable wad with a recognizable "disease spread" theme going on.

I very much enjoyed it. Hardly ever do E1 wads put me on edge, but this was such a fun wad to breeze through and I even died a couple of times.

Looks like it got rejected due to containing unmodified resources, though after looking at the wad i'm not entirely sure whats the problem. SFALL seems to be the only unmodified IWAD texture. Idgames uploads are a lot stricter nowadays. In case of doubt you could try contacting the maintainers.

yep, SFALL* and TEXTURE2 lumps are identical to vanilla (i checked with my wadcheck tool). i believe that SFALL is what caused the rejection.

Currently at E1M6. Superb stuff so far, only 2 things I noted:

  • E1M3 seems to be missing textures...somewhere. The only reason I know is because I checked the console.
  • I noticed that the map names haven't been changed in the automap. I whipped up a quick DeHackEd patch here (vanilla compatible if you're wondering about some of the name differences) if you want to include it.

Thoroughly enjoyed the WAD. Blasted through it on UV pistol starts in one sitting, everything felt just right and it was overall a blast to play. Loved E1M9 and E1M7 particularly, but all the maps are solid and quite memorable. Great work!

Holy fucking shit, this is a phenomenal wad, Crunchy. Pistol started on Ultra-Violence and you nailed my arse to the wall with that final boss fight. My hands are left raw after that battle, my god. Amazing stuff, mate.
