NaZa Posted April 1, 2020 (edited) April, 2020 > The yearly leader board Standard Leaderboard: 2 - SURVIVED (3:08:01): joe-ilya - Continues the tradition of returnees topping Bdubzzz this year. Doesn't even snuff it on his own maps. 2 - SURVIVED (3:40:07): Bdubzzz - Maintains a 100% survival rate, even on blind ground like DBP22. Fascinating stuff. 1 - 14 maps: Daerik - Proves Baker's Dozen wasn't a fluke - snuffs it in bloody hell either way. 1 - 12 maps: ReaperAA - Another beautiful rocket catch for ReaperAA, two months counting. 1 - 11 maps: Arbys550 - "It's over! I have the higher ground", said Arbys a second before falling back into the pit. 1 - 11 maps: Vince Vega - In his own words: "Forgot that I need to dodge projectiles". 1 - 11 maps: Roofi - Nearly got away with losing 315 health in a matter of seconds... only to hit an archvile focused on a mancubus. 2 - 10 maps: NaZa - Having developed a taste for rockets, I ate two more to satisfy my needs. 1 - 10 maps: dt_ - Snuffs it on the catwalk in DBP21, but not via rocket. Went diving in DBP22 and uncovered an inescapable pit. (DNF) 2 - 10 maps: WH-Wilou84 - As with dt_, even if Wilou hasn't survived, he should be commemorated in the .txt for finding a bug. Cheers! (DNF) 2 - 8 maps: glenzinho - A master in familiar territory? Only the third person to survive DBP22 so far, but not yet attempted DBP21. ? - 7 maps: Anima Zero - Target locked. 1 - 5 maps: Beginner - Grabs the soulsphere, instantly decides it isn't needed and goes back to status quo. Then the chaingunners appeared. 2 - 4 maps: NoisyVelvet - Comes out victorious in a moment for which the odds were 1/500 to barrel-suicide. GJ NOISY! 1 - 3 maps: SSGmaster - Ouch. 1 - 3 maps: ozy - Decision making at its finest in DBP21. I've counted a total of seven U-turns and one fried marine. 1 - 2 maps: Horus - Playing Hide and Seek with the archviles AND a chaingunner. I've seen a lot of ways to relieve stress in a run, but this... 1 - 2 maps: Suitepee - Reads the really important note outloud on the stream. Forgets it in a matter of seconds. 1 - 0 maps: Dieting Hippo - I'd like to blame this to tough openers, but you had DBP21's checkmated. Nonetheless, welcome! 1 - 0 maps: loveless - Delivers the most opposition to the DBP21 archviles. More than to the pain elementals in Disturbia, at least. WB! 1 - 0 maps: RjY - Chooses the greater evil, or should I say, evils, in DBP21. Burnt to a crisp on both accounts. 1 - 0 maps: Pegleg - Pegleg is not last this month. Is this the beginning of an exponential curve? Betting on Top 10 by September, anyway. 1 - 0 maps: seed - Brief is the only word I can summarize this performance in. Prepared Leaderboard: # - 2 maps: Horus - You aren't supposed to imitate the Standard run! # - 1 map: Pegleg - An attempt was made at finishing off the pain elemental "decoration". What is the Doomworld Ironman League? The DWIronman League is a monthly competition in which participants aim to survive for as many levels as possible in the given map set, preferably in one sitting. Click the spoiler tag at the bottom of the post for a detailed list of rules. Players of all levels of ability are welcome. It could change the way you play Doom! In April 2020 the DWIronman League dies to the two newest DBP sets: Occult Secrets of the Third Reich on Mars and Biotech is Godzilla, led by @Big Ol Billy and @glenzinho, -complevel 2. Perhaps the oddest and most certainly the most intriguing Ironman sets chosen yet, in a tale similar to Oscillation in 2017, both are relatively new sets, the former only released earlier today. I had been choosing between a number of sets, namely the Bloody Rust series, as the third installment had just rolled out of the gate, and one fairly large single map, but in the end I decided to roll the dice once again as in January. Hopefully with better results this time! If everyone survives like in February, well... Hopefully not! A really important note which I will emphasize, however, is that the archviles on the first map of Occult Secrets don't even need to be killed, and even if you want the gold key, there's an easier way to despose of them. Also, the final boss on Biotech is Godzilla isn't too keen on autoaim so you'll have to get close or shoot at an angle to get a better chance of hitting. Anyway, enough chitchatting. Time to attack the cyborg monsters led by (spoiler alert!) Godzilla and space nazis. Two clarifications before we start, though: If you had started playing Biotech is Godzilla before this thread was around, that will be, obviously, category 2. If you weren't aware this thread existed and continued playing, that'll also be category 2. I'll be more lenient this time around. I would also like to ask @Catpho to keep the RC1 for Biotech and RC2 for Occult Secrets around even if the set gets updated to RC2 in the meantime, for the sake of playing back demos. Thank you in advance! Essential Info Doom II: Hell on Earth as the IWAD selected. Compatibility level 2, or "(Doom (strict))" for ZDoom derivative ports. 9 + 8 maps across both sets. End with an unexitable, to my knowledge, credits map. Time taken if you survive is from exiting the final actual maps. One life for each set. > Download DBP21: Occult Secrets of the Third Reich on Mars (RC2, not RC1!!!) and DBP22: Biotech is Godzilla prboom-plus.exe -iwad doom2.wad -file DBP2x_RC1.wad -complevel 2 -skill 4 -record demo_name.lmp Spoiler There are two competitions: Standard and Prepared: To compete successfully in the Standard competition: your first play of the selected WAD(s) constitutes your one and only attempt for the month. To compete successfully in the Prepared competition: your one and only attempt for the month is determined BY YOU immediately before play and may follow any prior number of active (playing the set) and/or passive (watching demos/streams/videos) preparation that are strictly for practice/inspection purposes only. You cannot compete in the Standard competition after submitting a run to the Prepared competition. You may submit the first of your practice attempts to the Standard competition. UV only (excepting 1CC format), continuous recording. No pistol-starting each level. Demos (PrBoom+, GLBoom, Eternity or Chocolate), stream highlights and video recordings are the only accepted proofs. You must link to these runs in the thread. No additional WADs may be loaded. No inspection of the WAD(s)'s content in an editor if you are submitting a Standard run. No cheat codes and no features that result in behavior beyond what is possible in the intended source port (e.g. freelook, jumping and crouching in a boom set). This includes dynamic lights and brightmaps. If streaming or recording videos using an advanced source port with compatibility options, you must display these settings on-screen before your run. In ZDoom derivative ports, "Doom/Boom(strict)" will suffice. If you choose to stream/record your run for video rather than provide a demo and you die before completing a single level, either on the first map of a set OR because a single level was selected for the month, you must display the number of monsters killed/remaining in the level before you quit. You do not have to play the secret levels in order to register a complete run. However, a player who finishes the game having completed more secret levels than his/her competitors will rank higher than them. You cannot load a game having progressed past the save point. You cannot consult Doom Builder during your run to check for map details. If the recording of your official run is interrupted due to technical difficulties, you are not permitted a second attempt. Any surviving recording may be used to register a DNF result. Accidentally restarting a level before a death exit takes you to the tally screen will disqualify your run. If you are competing in the Standard competition, you are required to affix one of three numbers to your run informing the League of your degree of familiarity with the map/set played. Note that your evaluation should only take into consideration the content covered in your run (e.g. if you remember only one part of a level in a set you haven't played before but never reach that level, you should list your run as a [1] instead of [2]): This is a blind run. If I have played or watched any of the level/set being played before, I cannot remember any details that would offer a reasonable advantage over truly blind players. * This is not a blind run. I have familiarity with the set - played the level/set before, or watched it being played, and can remember some details that would offer a reasonable advantage over blind players. This is not a blind run. I have passively prepared for the competition - watched the level/set being played via stream, demo or video after it was announced as this month's challenge. * "Reasonable" in this instance asks you to consider whether the details in question are worth committing to memory. As in, you would thank the person who gave you this information with a straight face and not expect to be laughed at for being an utter berk. Arbys550 Posted April 1, 2020 Well, good thing I didn't decide to play this earlier today! Hopefully I don't get screwed over by some custom monster or something, as that seemed to happen to me in the past with these projects. 3 Share this post Link to post
Bdubzzz Posted April 2, 2020 Survived DBP22 in 1:40:12 Category 1.. Awesome wad, Played it slow cause the custom monsters seemed scary but I think I could of been a lot faster.. Also got lost for quite a while in a few of the maps so my time should be pretty bad ;p Ill play DBP21 later possibly or tomorrow, just wanted to post the survival for the first wad :D DWIronman-DBP22-dubz.zip 9 Share this post Link to post
Dieting Hippo Posted April 2, 2020 (edited) My first shot at the DWIronman! I played DBP21 and DBP22 for Category 1. I died on the first map of each, but at least I got fairly far in DBP21 before getting nailed by a stray projectile. I didn't fare nearly as well in DBP22, and the demo shows me freaking out right before getting slaughtered. I'm looking forward to next month's, hopefully I manage to make it to the second map on the next one! Bdubzzz Posted April 2, 2020 Survived DBP21 in 1:59:57, Category 2 for this one as I saw Tezur0 play this wad a few weeks ago on Twitch. Pretty much all DBP's I've played have been good, this one is no exception. Should mention I got very lost on a map again so time wise was pretty slow for this wad too... o well heh DWIronman-DBP21-dubz.zip So from my earlier post DBP22 was survived in 1:40:12 (cat 1) so total time is: 3:40:09..ya quite a long Ironman if you get lost like I did, otherwise I think you can expect to spend closer to 3 hours 9 Share this post Link to post
ReaperAA Posted April 2, 2020 Welp. I was planning to play DBP21 sooner or later anyway. I could've gained a Cat 2 advantage if I had done so. 1 Share this post Link to post

Thanks for the feature @NaZa. On the krew's behalf i can say it means a lot to them! Have fun playing and dying everyone! 6 Share this post Link to post

NaZa Posted April 2, 2020 (edited) Setting a target for others to beat this early @Bdubzzz? Sportsmanlike. Speed is 20 because demo playback. Duh. Meanwhile here's an interesting run of the Occult Secrets of the Third Reich on Mars (category 2, of course) - despite beautifully catching a rocket while turning around on MAP08, I feel both immensely satisfied and underwhelmed. Why satisfied? I should've died on every map preceding it, starting from MAP05. I was able to cheat death so many times I lost count by the time I actually died. Why underwhelmed? I'm fairly sure I was on marginally quicker pace than Bdubzzz heading into that wretched setup. In the end, despite my usual rambling about custom monsters, I really enjoyed this! The replacement monsters are very easy to understand and get used to (barring the Pain Elemental replacement which I glossed over about two times) Very colorful and enjoyable to play. Each map was somehow different and I especially enjoyed the "deadly things come in small packages" MAP06. Hopefully the experience will be the same when I delve into DBP22! 6 Share this post Link to post
Anima Zero Posted April 2, 2020 DBP21 - Died like a chump in map 6 cause me & Soulspheres are like crack. I can't resist bullrushing them sometimes, hordes of enemies be damned. DBP22 - Died at map 3's start. Those custom imps are jerks, that is all. DWIronman_DBP_AnimaZero.zip 7 Share this post Link to post
NaZa Posted April 2, 2020 This one, on the other hand, I don't know... Also category 2. I really love that Imps became one of the top priority monsters to kill. In essence, I really enjoyed that. It was quite a decent run up to M4 and I was setting up for the long haul, cue a mandatory jump off a cliff. Turns out there was a cyber baron, one of the monsters used here (which I don't like in any of its forms). I landed in front of it. I just saw two demons, a pink head, heard an explosion, and I lay down dead. Very odd. I was enjoying the map, though, don't get me wrong! Shoutout to MAP02 for being very exploratory based even though there was way too many midtextures. Dead on MAP04, category 2. dwironman_apr20_naza_22.zip 6 Share this post Link to post
ReaperAA Posted April 3, 2020 (edited) Demo: dbp21demo.zip (Category 1) Used: Glboom+ 2.5.1.7um (complevel 2), RC2 of wad. Dead in: Map 7 (reached at roughly around 1:00:00 mark) I died at what was probably the last trap of the map. I regret not grabbing the invul. 6 Share this post Link to post

Occult Secrets spoilers: Spoiler I thought I could find the Archvile killer secret a lot earlier than it seems it was located, so I spent a large chunk of time after the blue key trying to find it. I also didn't realize that the central room behind the bookcase had another path to take (to the area with the Gold Key door) so I found myself looking around to see if there were any other secrets missed. My long survival time on MAP01 is only owed to me pressing use on every wall I could find :P At least I got most monsters killed before I died! 2 Share this post Link to post
ReaperAA Posted April 4, 2020 (edited) DBP22 demo Demo: dbp22demo.zip (Category 1) Used: Glboom+ 2.5.1.7um (complevel 2), RC2 of wad. Dead in: Map 7 (reached at roughly around 1:30:00-ish mark) Another Map 7 death and and that too towards the end trap again. I suck at BFG usage and I suck at dodging Cybie rockets, that is all. 5 Share this post Link to post
ozy Posted April 4, 2020 Well, that didn't last as long as i'd hoped. Cat 1 for both. DBP21: dead on MAP02 DBP22: dead on MAP03 Megasphere woes contributed to both deaths. My demise in DBP21 was especially embarrassing - should I get the powerup or get back to safety? Nah, let's take the 3rd option and slowly melt in something toxic. DBP22 ended in a more unexpected death but I had every opportunity to avoid it. Sigh. Having said that, I was very fortunate to make it out of the first map. Beginner Posted April 4, 2020 Category 1 lol for both. DBP21: dead on map06. I just don't know what went wrong. DBP22: dead on map01. Got introduced to a modified baron in a (presumably) secret by getting shot in the back. 8 Share this post Link to post

Suitepee Posted April 4, 2020 https://www.twitch.tv/videos/583390355 Starts at 1:51:25 into the livestream, category 1 run for both wads. DBP21: Died on map 1 due to the beginner's trap of throwing 4 Archviles at the player. (Yeah, don't play this map blind folks.) Pegleg Posted April 5, 2020 Category 1 DBP 21 Dead on Map 01 Kills: 28/135 Time: 8:10 That was an interesting opening. Before things got going, I was just wandering around the level for several minutes, so the demo won't be the most exciting, but with all the talk about a difficult opening, I kept waiting for something to happen. While I was doing this, the ambient sound effects (without the background music) gave it a rather creepy atmosphere. It very much felt like a combination of Wolfenstein and Doom, which I think was the point. DBP 22 Dead on Map 01 Kills: 1/68 Time: 1:21 To begin with, I think there is definitely a better way to proceed than what I ended up doing, which was run around and get trapped in a corner with only a pistol against more than one enemy. At least I took one out on my way down. I can't say much about the mapset other than it feels quite different from DBP 21. I'm not used to seeing flowers in a Doom map, although they looked bright and cheery, which was a nice change of pace. dwi_pegleg_dbp2122_cat1.zip 9 Share this post Link to post
Daerik Posted April 5, 2020 DBP22: Cat 1, died on map 6 at around 1:12:31. Very mean room, feels like I guessed wrong on how to handle it. Not a fan of the replacement imps and barons. Daerik_DBP22.zip https://www.twitch.tv/videos/584276425 Additional twitch vod. 8 Share this post Link to post
WH-Wilou84 Posted April 6, 2020 (edited) DBP21 : Category 1. Spoiler Died on map 07, due to what I thought was a wall actually being a midtexture. You know, midtextures don't protect from Arch-Vile blasts. :) Cool stuff here, I've never been a huge fan of Wolfenstein 3D but this might be one of the best crossovers I've ever played. Maps are good, I've had a good time. I thought Cyber-Hitler would be the final boss, but to my surprise you'll encounter him multiples times. Fun stuff. Map 06's ending was cringe-worthy though. DBP22 : Category 1. Spoiler DNF... Managed to get stuck on map 05. A shame, I was having a blast with the set. I'll properly report the bug. I love this theme, this is certainly a project I'd have been glad to contribute to ! Gameplay is harsh, thanks to the custom enemies and to quite a few vicious moments, starting from that pesky Vile in map 01.
