I Played Duke Nukem Today

Recommended Posts

While I was playing I took special notice of kicking off the slime enemies that crawl on Dukes face. It came to me that Duke s kicking/shooting himself in the face when he kills those enemies when they're on his head/face. That's it, I've been playing this game since elementary and it's just dawned on me lol.

Yeah it is rather nonsensical when you put it that way. God, those enemies creeped me out with their stretching and gross alien sounds. And if one of those bastards crawled onto the screen right when you fired an RPG... Still, it was worth the risk to put that RPG right in the middle of a cluster of eggs and scramble them instantly.

A long time ago, I was told the video in the porn store was from an actual porn and that was her leg in front of her face instead of her arm. Now I'm wondering if someone was fucking with me.

You mean you played Duke Nukem 3D. ;) No one plays the original Duke Nukem anymore - its tech is too poor; Duke Nukem II is still fun, though. :D

The funny thing is that in the original release (1.3D) you could not do that (kick the slimers while they are on your face), but in the Atomic edition it was changed so that you could. Maybe someone decided that fluidity of gameplay is more important than common sense.

On the other hand, in 1.3D you could actually kick with both feet at the same time (selecting foot as primary weapon and using Attack + Mighty Foot button simultaneously). This looked really hilarious with you walking and kicking both feet together. This was fixed in the Atomic edition - you would never see both feet on screen at the same time. Also the sprite behavior was updated - in 1.3D the mighty foot would not trigger the kick sprite - only when used as the primary weapon you would see Duke kick. In Atomic the kick is also shown when used as a secondary weapon, but it still shows Duke kicking with his right foot. Obviously no one wanted to make new sprites for such a small detail.

It's not impossible.

Protip: don't try to apply real life logic to video games.

@dr_st Yeah I hear ya. The person who told me that even drew a Paint picture depicting how the woman is positioned so. I sorta want to see the video to confirm it, but it feels like "reading Playboy for the articles". :/

Small detail? That was one of the defining features when I was a kid. You could do Liu Kang's double kick. I was really disappointed when they removed that later on, but in the Atomic Edition you can get pretty close by binding "quick kick" to a double tap, I use mouse 5, and continuously clicking the key with the "mighty foot" equipped and hitting fire. It's not quite the same but it's close. I still miss that stupid double kick though.

Some of it has to do with the fact it has been taken down from digital stores sadly.

So I didn't misremember kicking with both feet at once. I tried to show it to my brother when I bought my own copy of DN3D only to find it didn't exist anymore, and I felt really stupid.

Clearly Duke's been taking a class with the Ministry of Silly Walks and can kick his own face.

With some skill, it used to be possible to do even triple kicks rofl.

But this was patched out eventually, it's only possible in older versions of the game to kick with more than one leg at a time.

No, I played it some days ago (haven't played arcade platformers in some time though, and noticed that my skill rusted quite a bit).

I never played the original, actually. It looked and sounded so awful after I got used to Duke Nukem II. That one I played through and a lot of its challenge relies on the cheap technique of enemies surprising you from just beyond the edge of the visible screen. Like - once the enemy is in your field of view, it may be too late to avoid damage. It's rather annoying, but once you understand this mechanic, it's totally possible to avoid most damage in levels; although it kinda forces slow and careful play rather than fast-paced action. I wonder if the original is like this too.

Not really, DN1 let you play fairly aggressively although you did still have to mind your shooting a bit when it came to bombs in boxes and destroying the soda powerups.  IMO it was the better game compared to Duke 2 despite the second's added gimmicks.

I do wonder how much Duke 1 & 2 being out of print has to do with this stuff and not just the "nobody cares about these any more" spiel.
