In relation to the Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal, what exactly were the final bosses in Final Doom?

Recommended Posts

In Evilution we face the "Demon-Spitter" that led the flesh-ship attack on Jupiter's Moon (either Europa or Io). In Plutonia we defeat the "Gatekeeper" who attempted to fill the shoes of the Icon of Sin, orchestrating the second and final attempt at a takeover of Earth in Doomguys native universe. Both of these demons look identical to the Icon of Sin. So now that the newer games have been confirmed as canon to the classics, what exactly were these demons? Were they all just the Icon of Sin? Did Doomguy just injure the Icon in Doom II and TNT, and then finally kill him in Plutonia? Or are these demons simply "Titans", the species? We can see that there are multiple titans carrying the unholy cathedrals in Doom Eternal, so were the Gatekeeper and the Demonspitter just OTHER titans, and the Icon of Sin is like the head titan? What do you all think?

Final Doom creators didn't want to use anything but the DOOM 2 sprites, so the gatekeeper and Demon-spitter might have been planned to look different, but I think that the Demon-spitter was the Icon of Sin, that was sent back to Hell when it died, and decided to emerge from Jupiter to attack Earth again, but did not know that DOOMGUY would be there, and the Gatekeeper was just a giant skull that protected Hell from outside forces.

Poor Icon of Sin. Trying to emerge in a different location, billions of kilometers away; what are the odds of that jerk Doomguy being there too?

Assuming its just creative license that was retroactively made strange by DOOM '16 and Eternal. When Final DOOM was being created im sure the idea was that they were totally different demons seperate from the icon, but just shared the same look. In terms of lore established by '16 and Eternal their probably just 'titans' although I doubt they'll be brought up at all in the lore beyond this point.

Here's a weird thought but what if Final DOOM takes place after DOOM Eternal?  We don't know where Evilution and Plutonia fall in the timeline.  We only know that they occur after Earth was invaded.  But which Earth?  Doomguy's or Hayden's?

It's a big family, too:

Counter-clockwise: Chaos is from Revolution!, Gatewatcher from Plutonia 2, Gatekeeper from Plutonia, Icon of Sin from Doom II, Demonspitter from TNT, Beholder from Plutonia Revisited, and Nyx is their proud mommy.

I like how on this art it changes a bit the shape of the hole in the bottom trio -- TNT's got a pentagram-shaped hole, while Plutonia's shaped like one of the Plutonia exit teleporters.

I think there may be more than one icon of sin

Yeah, there is also one in Samuel Hayden's desk in a super-hidden room in E4M2: Perfect Hatred. You can only get there by performing a lost soul jump through a solid wall, exploiting a rare bug in the engine which happens 1 out of 666,667 attempts. It will be discovered by accident in 2029, and Romero will claim it was the intention all along.
