Vanilla&SmoothDoom onscreen weapons 4x upscale

Carefully upscaled animations for onscreen weapons from original Doom by utilizing a combination of a variety of interpolation techniques and long hand redraw. I started working on the project on September 2017 if I remember it correctly. Somewhat around 2019 I adopted the resulting frames over Smooth Doom that was made by Gifty and his team. I think I should also post the exact Smooth Doom version it works correctly with to help user to avoid excessive hassle.

The target source port: ZDoom and its derivatives.

Vanilla usage: zdoom -file doomweap4xup.pk3

Smooth Doom usage: zdoom -file smoothdoom.pk3 SmoothDoomHudWeap4XUP.pk3


You should run this mod on the top of others to successfuly replace graphics.

Make sure it's only 4x upscale without aspect ratio correction so the pixels won't look evenly square alike if used with boxy texture filter in the game.Insert other media

Imagine if Gifty included this amazing graphics in his mod as an option. Everybody would use that for sure. These are so much better than 2x neural upscale weapons.

Would be cool but that would definitely increase the size of the mod and I think there is still some room for further enhancements. Now I can definitely say the pack is ready for combat but thirst for "better" will always be, then how often Gifty would be fine to update it, by the way only Vanilla style is there, the other styles Smooth Doom provides aren't there at all.

This mod no longer works correctly with gzdoom 4.4.2 or smooth doom. I don't like the changes made with smoothdoom SE, which changes the vanilla atmosphere, and doesn't work with the mod either. The most I can get working correctly is the chaingun and BFG, while none of the other weapons work or have graphical corruption and mis-alignment.

 

I'm not sure if this has incompatibility with other mods either, like the neural upscale.

Wasn't this done before? Screenshots look very familiar

 

I remember some strange looking things with the mod I tried long ago. Plasmagun looked weird if i recall right. So this might be better.

Nevermind my post. I tried the upscaled smooth version and it's really good. The plasmagun looks fine as well.

I got the mod to finally work, my original smoothdoom pak was from 2017 and was breaking something. The new version still does not work with the pistol, which is horrendously mis-aligned, and breaks the plasmagun idle state when using voxels, which can be fixed by disabling the plasmagun in smoothdoom and replacing the pistol textures in the 4x mod.

 

edit: actually, disabling the pistol works as well, so now I have all the weapons working. That said, this requires disabling the decorate include statements, and editing doomguy.txt in deco-player to default weapon names, and you only get the standard weapon with HD graphics.

 

 

I don't know how to fix what's breaking it other than disabling the broken parts, and the only real fix might be for smooth doom to directly implement this mod, or fix whatever is incompatible.

Yes, it requires Smooth Doom recent versions. Some while ago I had an issue when a guy on zdoom forums told me shotgun animation looks really weird and it occured because my hi-res mod became obsolete - fixed it pretty fast. It changed the entire way the shotgun animation worked.

Download the version of Smooth Doom I provided the link for in my first message, the mod was based on it.

 A little update: SSG graphics enhanced, now doomguy holds 2 shells when reloads the gun, some other minor enhancements for SSG also included.

Your new version works pretty good with neural upscale and smoothdoom_hires but scuba steve's cleaner skyboxes break the weapon graphics if loaded after certain mods. I forget which particular one, but it doesn't make sense why it happens either. full screen hud also seems to be broken now, but that's not too important, and it doesn't break any graphics even if it isn't loading properly.

 

edit: actually it might not be the skyboxes. It might be you have to load neural upscale before smooth doom. Also, fullscreen hud works if you lower it in the list. mod compatibility is a pain.
