How do DOOM 2 deaths work?

Recommended Posts

Watch this video of death animations in DOOM 2.

I'm confused about some of the death animations.

  • what weapon would cause the chaingunner to explode like that? Because, a rocket would make him explode not split, and a chainsaw would not be powerful enough to make that. Did they have a certain weapon in mind to kill the Chaingunner with?
  • why do Lost souls explode?
  • the same question as Chaingunner, but for Caco
  • why after the Mancubus's headshot, would she melt?
  • And finally, why would Our Hero (DOOMGUY) have a slit throat? no enemy would be tall enough to hit him there that would cause his neck to bleed (except reverent, but punches wouldn't cut somebodies throat) and the fireballs/hitscan weapons/rockets wouldn't cause your neck to bleed. Also, the Spectre/Demon would not bite your throat.

You'd have to make multiple sprites to fit every type of damage, that's a lot of work and space...
Edit: Variety was also a factor for the odd choices i guess

Doom isn't supposed to be a realistic game.

It was not that goofy on purpose either. It's just old

They were drawn like that. No other logic needed.

I get that, but why?

"Here's Greg's model of the Revenant for DOOM II. He's a favorite of mine because I just LOVE the punching sound - it makes me laugh every time! Yes, I made sure the sound made me laugh. :)"

I was talking bout death animations being so specific. Not about the tone of the game.
Even the tone is subject to interpretation.

No monster is tall enough to hit the Doomguy in the throat? lol wut. Imps and Barons can easily slash his throat with their claws. Revenants are known to throat punch their victims. You don't know what your talking about. Git gud scrub.

Variety is my guess, if they all die the same way by dropping it gets boring

[1] - The super shotgun

[2] - Because mind = literally blown

[3] - See answer  1

[4] - Because I used a plasma rifle on them (are Mancubuses female?)

[5] - Imps are nearly identical height to the player and have spikes on their body as well as claws. Barons/Hell Knights also have a scratch attack and are much taller than the marine.

The mancubus is actually composed of human corpses sutured together. When a fatal blow is made, the foundation stitch comes undone, effectively unraveling the body.

I forgot they had that scratch ability.

I mentioned that, and also, punches generally don't cause bleeding.

DUDE!!!!!! Punches cause bleeding! Fists can break noses and knock out teeth, bleeding is almost always guaranteed to follow! I'm beginning to wonder if you even play DOOM?!

I guess they expected people to use the rl for cacodemons which explains the giant hole

who says it does have to be a slit throat? It can be a shot to the neck.

Because thats how they created them back then.

The 90s were their own times, OP. Creativity through limitations was what dominated the landscape.

Only SM is described as a women.

Mancubi is a guy hence the "man".

Man means Human, not male. also, species can have more than one sex. Look at us, our species has over 14 of them.

"Man" is mainly used to refer as male. I'm not focusing on the other two meanings, that's outside of the scope of discussion.

This was just supposed to be a fun little thing to dissect the deaths of demons. Could we possibly not fight?

Chaingunner's split personality wants to be independent.

Lost souls think too hard about stuff that doesn't matter.

Caci is literally fragile, both physically and emotionally.

Fatso is self-conscious and doesn't want to be fat in death because it's more embarrassing.

Doomguy is never actually killed by any monster you see in the game but quickly assassinated by the ghost of a notorious serial killer.

I kinda love how monsters' death animations don't always match the way they're disposed of.

I've always thought it'd be hilarious if a modern game ran with this idea, Something like shooting and enemy with a pistol only to have them completely explode or shooting an enemy in the foot only to have gushing bullet holes appear all over their body as they die.
