haruko haruhara Posted May 8, 2020 I got into the game when I was 11 an I loved it I played though many wads but not slaughter maps though but back in 2018 I got into the modding side of the doom community an now in 2020 I got the modding skills I need an I now made my randomizer mod well it first started off me making a invasion wad but that failed but I'm proud of me being kinda a professional at modding 1 Share this post Link to post
Pixel Fiend Posted May 8, 2020 After playing Dropsy and Hyper Light Drifter I decided I was very fond of pixel graphics and wanted to have games that have the nicest pixelation. Apart from such masterpieces as Noita, Blackwell Epiphany, Devil Daggers and others, it occurred to me that I could look into some older games that could be displayed with pixelated graphics. But it wasn't until 2 months ago that I played Doom for the first time. 1 Share this post Link to post
Mortrixs19 Posted May 8, 2020 (edited) I am a fan of old games (because my computer is shit) After I was done playing Prince of Persia on dos box and other games I found on the internet I decided to check a list of games that I could install to play and then I found doom 2, that was my first game doom but I stopped at map06 because it was too hard. I played ultimate doom and then I resumed doom 2. That was the first doom game I played and the one who hooked me into the series. My first experience wasn't the best for sure, Dos box, vanilla keys, shitty mouse look. I was already through Final doom when I figured out that Zdoom existed thanks to BigMacDavis. 1 Share this post Link to post
NoXion Posted May 8, 2020 I got into playing Doom when I lived in a hostel, had an old PC, and needed a cheap FPS game with lots of content. I was already deep into Half-Life and its mods, so Doom felt like a natural choice after that. Since then I've been able to afford a more up to date rig, but classic Doom and its massive library of custom WADs and mods turned out to be the kind of gaming experience I could just keep returning to. Speaking of Half-Life, do people still make mods for that? 5 Share this post Link to post
danidf96 Posted May 8, 2020 I started playing doom because of the dumbest most stupid reason in the world.Look i'm a big jojo bizarre adventure and when i saw there was a mod for doom i decided to try it out. After playing around with the mod for about 4 minutes i got bored and decided to play just vanilla doom. The rest is history, i got hooked and after some videos from different youtubers like gmanlives and Icarusliv i fell in love with the community. Later i found out about Doomworld and visited the forums as a lurker until recently when i decided to create an account and post stuff because i wanted to interact with this great community. So yeah, that's that. 6 Share this post Link to post
Revved Posted May 8, 2020 I think the first time I really got interested in playing it was the AVGN showing clips of Wolfenstein and Doom, the 32X review in particular, especially with that port's less-than stellar music. It's been 12 years since I started playing it, and I never looked back. 4 Share this post Link to post
Mystic 256 Posted May 8, 2020 Here is my doom life story. My dad showed me the game when i was like 11ish i think on the windows xp computer at the house i used live at and let me play it, the level he left it off on was E2M1 and i remember getting to E2M2 and that level being impossible for me back then but i still kept playing because it was the funnest game I ever played, and I was hooked on it, and then I realized there was a first episode and i tried that and played it too, and later for my bday i think i got the doom anniversary cd with doom, doom 2, and final doom on it, I think i remember TNT being my favorite back then because of the spaceyness of middle levels, plutonia was hard for me so i didnt play as much until later in my life when i got gudder at doom A few years later i discovered what wads and source ports were, I think the first megawad I remember playing was Dimensions Of Time because I thought the name sounded cool and i think i remember getting pretty far because the levels in were short but I remember enjoying it. I discovered more wads over years and that led me to discovering skulltag and zdaemon where I could play multiplayer doom and i was so amazed by it I really remember loving the invasion mode in skulltag, fighting waves of monsters with other people on the server was a true thrill. and then I discovered wad making tools like Doombuilder and xwe (i think this is arround 2009ish) and I attempted to make a wad, i didn't made a fully complete level but i didn't mess arround a bunch... i think teleporters took me a while to learn but over time i learned more and more from regular doom stuff like crushers and lifts and teleports like i said before... to later zdoomish stuff basic acs, polyobjects (which i also remember taking a long time to learn), 3d floors, adding custom textures and realm 667 monsters in with xwe... but i had a problem i never made a complete level, and while my understanding of mechanics was great my understanding of encounters and monster placements and layout was something i didn't consider until later, i was mostly screwing arround in the editors learning whatever caught my interest... it wasn't until 2014 or 2015 that i finally made my first complete simple map Kr_BaseOctave later named to Mys_octave when i added a starry sky in and fixed a inescapable sewage trench I didn't notice to be consistent with my later wads having Mys/Myz at the front of them, I so wanted to create to create a another wad after that but for the next few years i would kinda struggle to make a full map (however like the 2009-2014 period i was learning random things that interested me like portals, custom keybinds that puke scripts, adding voxels in gzdoom maps, udmf features, ect) later I discovered discord and doom discord servers like Joy of Mapping and then in 2018 Jimmy challenged me to make a map in a day to help me get mapping and get out of my rut and I came up with Mys_SigmaSector my second map which lead me on roll because my third and fourth complete maps where made in the next days but however after my 3rd map there was a periods not much due to life issues after that and maybe still a few mapping doubts... though in 2019 i did make a 5th map in june inspired by entryway from doom 2, 6th semi unfinished double impact style map with Alper, and 7th map in the fall... but then my house got flooded because of Imelda and I was out of mapping for a while to help fix the house and stuff ... I did try to join Mapwich 2 and make a map with Joe Ilya who I got partnered up which I think was going good for a little until my computer was shitting itself badly because of age and possible flood damage and probably other factors, I was having bad computer issues, and to this day this is still a ongoing thing and that's where we leave off on May 2020 present day, i'm waiting for the stimulus thing check to come so i can get a new pc and get back to mapping again, sometimes the current pc have is stable enough for me to play to several wads and make a room or two in the editor however most the time its laggy laggy crash crash bsod with sprinkles of some stability periods where my computer works kinda, but hopefully the stimlus check thing comes and a new era will begin for mapping. So that's my doom life story. 1 Share this post Link to post
Doominator2 Posted May 8, 2020 I got into Doom because of my love and interest for pretty much anything considered vintage or retro, especially video games. Doom just happened to stick with me for some reason. 3 Share this post Link to post
Ramiel Posted May 9, 2020 (edited) I remember playing the original Bioshock on Xbox 360, my favorite parts being when I would just run through an area as fast as I could, unloading into any enemies I came across. Tried searching for more games that captured that feeling and came across a gamefaqs thread that recommended Doom. I picked up the XBLA version shortly after and fell in love with it, the speed and visceral action was exactly what I wanted. I eventually moved over to PC and figured out source ports, custom .wads, mods, etc. as well as playing Doom 3 and Final Doom. It was particularly interesting being a relatively new fan of the series when Doom 2016 was announced, and being exposed to so many different iterations and experiences almost at once. 1 Share this post Link to post
Devalaous Posted May 9, 2020 17 hours ago, Mara said: The game has quite a reputation. It's always mentioned when talking about history of video games (especially when talking about FPS games) so most of the folks are at least aware of its existence and its importance. When there's an easy way to access the game, it does make you feel like "welp, might as well take a look at it myself". That experience was Xbox Live Arcade about ten years ago for me. "Free trial, oh boy!", I said and downloaded it. you sure can tell the difference between modern times, and the old days. One single free trial level, versus a whole episode. 3 Share this post Link to post
Hunting4r2d2 Posted May 9, 2020 I watched my Dad play on the SNES when I was younger (around 2005), and rediscovered it around 2013 after seeing footage of it in a youtube video. Ever since then it has been my favorite videotape franchise. 1 Share this post Link to post
Egg Boy Posted May 9, 2020 My little brother's father (who I know longer than my own, long story) was really into mapping, specifically for Quake and Unreal Tournament 2004, he even ported QSTART to 2004 and we used to deathmatch like crazy on it. So I started mapping with UT2004, then did a bit of Quake, so I was familiar with Id, and knew they made Doom (which everyone knows about via its status as a cultural zeitgeist). So it only took me until Doom started blowing up (again) in recent years with the announcement of a new title and many youtubers who were doing Mod showcases and whatnot, not to mention Brutal Doom (which I am not terribly fond of these days, but that's neither here nor there) and its outrageous popularity in circles outside this particular community. All in all, it was sort of a mini renaissance for Doom, and I'm sure many new users started popping up around the time I did for the same reasons, and I'm glad I did, since Ultimate Doom and Doom 2 have become 2 of my favorite games of all time. 1 Share this post Link to post
Artman2004 Posted May 9, 2020 I got into Doom because of GZDoom and its large selection of mods. Mods help keep the game fresh. 2 Share this post Link to post
kalaeth Posted May 12, 2020 (edited) I must have been 9 years old when doom came out, but my first memories of it are from a few year after, staying at my father's and playing it long after he had gone to sleep. Then when I got my first computer, a old one at the time, I played more of it and ever since then it's one of the first things I make sure is installed in any computer I get. 1 Share this post Link to post
slayermbm Posted May 12, 2020 (edited) I don't remeber the exact year I played Doom for the first time, although I'm pretty sure it was around the 2000's and I was a teenager. I was curious about the supposed father of the FPS genre and, suffice to say, after playing for the first time I got hooked almost immediately. Back then, I was not aware there was such a huge community around the game. After adulthood, and my little experience with programming, I started admiring John Carmack for his genius and attitude towards games, specially his decision to release the original source code for free. Today, I'm constantly trying out new source ports, maps, gameplay mods and so on. Doom is like a neverending experience and I keep coming back for it, no matter what. 1 Share this post Link to post
Can't play on Nightmare Posted May 12, 2020 (edited) I've been playing Doom and Doom 2 since 1998. But still can't play on nightmare. Not even after 22 years. 2 Share this post Link to post
MadGuy Posted May 12, 2020 Well, I started to getting in to the classics after DOOM 2016 and after I had found more about it's modding. Before that I had played mainly DOOM 3 and the RPG games (plus the PSP port (once)). Hence I end up making my own port after my frustration of not been able to load classic doom mods on the BFG Edition. 1 Share this post Link to post
vanilla_d00m Posted May 12, 2020 (edited) I first saw it in the early or late 90s i don't remember. I was at my cousins house and I was like 8 or 9, played it once and I was too scared to play it ever again. All I remember was using a joystick which my cousin used for the game and spamming the chainsaw all over the place. Opening doors and the levels looked tall and big. Around 2005 I tried it out myself again and I got into it quick. I tried Zdaemon as well. It sounds so original tbh... originality floats my boat. DoomguyMurdersTheseBarz Posted May 13, 2020 Started playing when I was in 7th grade, which would have been 2008. I can't remember exactly if I found out about it from AVGN, but I must have, since I watched him religiously at the time. I also can't remember exactly what it felt like to play it for the first time (I do distinctly remember playing it all night before the last day of school that year, so I was definitely hooked early), but I can make some inferences. For one, I had been getting into old horror movies, and Doom, with how colorful and self-consciously shlocky it is, appealed to me as much then as it does now. For another, 2008 was the beginning of the despotic reign of the military shooter with COD 4, and while the jokes people make about those games hadn't really materialized yet (MLG Mountain Dew 420 Doritos etc.), even back then, while I didn't really dislike them, they already seemed kinda drab and clinical at times, which Doom absolutely isn't. Related to that is the fact that, compared to some (not nearly all, but some) of the people in my life who played COD, who were loudmouthed, aggressive, and didn't practice much self-awareness, the Doom community, ten years removed from being placed under intense scrutiny after a literal mass murder, came off as a lot more restrained. Of course, that's mostly because the COD players I knew were all middle-schoolers, and the folks on Doomworld were adults, so it wasn't a fair comparison, but it's one I made. I've done a lot of growing up since then, and I don't base any part of my love of Doom on a resentment of something else. But love it I still do, even as nearly every circumstance of my life has changed in the intervening years. Like everything else I love, I take long breaks from it, but when I come back to it, it always makes me feel a way nothing else can. 3 Share this post Link to post
vanilla_d00m Posted May 14, 2020 (edited) For me it's the music.. Bobby Prince really nailed it down. The music in oldschool doom is just too good. 3 Share this post Link to post
seamuskills Posted May 17, 2020 I got into doom because of the new doom and I love retro games, also i'm really interested in game dev and dooms engine is pretty flexible. I am working on my first wad as I write this 4 Share this post Link to post

Chip Posted May 19, 2020 I just got into it because I saw they put it onto the PS4 store and it was only 5 bucks for 36 levels, then I liked the first few levels, and was hooked! I can't stop playing it 9 months later! (technically, I am the youngest member on Doomworld) 1 Share this post Link to post
