Cancelled Doom 3 mods?

Recommended Posts

Reca|| to He||: it was a highly promising level pack with new monsters and challenges and all. A few cool things, such as arachnotrons, have appeared anyway in Phobos.

Hexen: Edge of Chaos: the pack got released as a demo only. Otherwise, it lingered too long in development hell until its lead designer called it quits (see the relevant Doomworld thread in the News forum).

I'm sure there are a lot more. Several of them are single levels, which were only posted on forums (not here though), so they're not memorable failures.

Here are some cancelled mods I remember:

- Recall to Hell: Very promising, but too ambitious. They wanted to let it take place on all planets of the solar system and so on. They had some talented people working on it and got some stuff done. There was an alpha released some years ago were you could take a look at some unfinished levels and models.

- Doom Chronicles: SP episode with computer controlled team mates. Short demo version was released. https://www.moddb.com/mods/doom-chronicles

- Doom 3 Fortress: Team Fortress mod for Doom 3 MP. Development switched over to Quake 4 when that game came out, then it died.

- Requiem Avenging Angel Mod: remake of the FPS of the same name from 1999. Switched to Quake 4, died.

- Sapphire Scar: A mod losely inspired by System Shock. https://www.moddb.com/mods/sapphire-scar

- Quake II Lost Marine: A remake of Quake 2. First 2 levels were finished and released as a demo, but there was planned to be more. https://www.moddb.com/mods/quake-ii-lost-marine

- The Dark Side of Io: SP campaign with new story and weapons. https://www.moddb.com/mods/the-dark-side-of-io

- Shadowing Hate: large scale mod with a cyberpunk setting. https://www.violationentertainment.com/dev_sh_i.html

Man, if only Recall to Hell released. Looked good enough for a Triple-A release.

Also, there was Facing Hell, a mission pack that had water.

They released most of the assets for Recall to Hell. Some of the stuff became playable in the Fragging Free mod new release from what I've seen from the trailer.

Speaking of cancelled mods, there were tons. I remember System Shock remake, Silent Hill mod (The Stage) , Even a Soul Reaver underworld mod popped up on youtube at some point.

The Evil was another Silent Hill / Zombie based mod which they released some assets. Yeah. And those were on the official sites like PlanetDoom and ModDB. If you're going into Doom3World territory probably there's alot more.

Right, Facing Hell, almost forgot about that one. Telling from the screenshots they had some great hell levels, and the base levels also look quite promising. They even have their website still available: http://facinghell.com

It's a shame that they disappeared.

Another cancelled mod: Doom 3: Hell on Earth https://www.moddb.com/mods/doom-3-hell-on-earth

Doom 3 Can Do It Too was a great little exploration into pushing the Doom 3 engine towards realistic city-scapes.  Shame it all disappeared along with Doom3World.org.

There was a remake of Chex Quest that was cancelled called Chex Trek, it's creator began working on another Chex-themed mod for Half-Life 2 but it hasn't received any updates since 2009.

UAC-Warfare started as a DooM 3 modification back in 2004, migrated to Quake 4 and died.

Doom 3 Jedi. Also started as a DooM 3 modification, migrated to Quake 4 and died.

Just-Doom. In 2008 a demo was available, but it was already removed from the site.

The Chex Quest mod at least released a fully functional beta version with a large level and all the new monsters included: https://www.moddb.com/mods/chex-trek-beyond-the-quest

So, like Quake 2 Lost Marine, there is at least a part of the mod released and playable. Wish more of those ambitious mods released demos like that.

@Pankrat: Just-Doom is interesting! There even was a demo? Found this file: https://www.lonebullet.com/mods/download-just-doom-demo-doom-3-mod-free-3119.htm

I think there was also a funny Wolf3D remake WIP in the Doom 3 engine. Funny because it was really just stuff like Wolf3D E1M1 with higher resolution textures and dynamic lights.

What's up with all the mods which migrated to Quake 4 and then gave up? Seems like a funny way to break your foundation and lose control. Or maybe they didn't really care that it was Doom, just that it was the latest engine at that time, which quickly got superseded by more advanced games.

There were 2, one by Obihb, and one by Neurological.

There was a sequel to Shambler's Castle. Nails of Chthon.

Look up on ModDb Hell on Earth. They were doing some progress especially with some enemies like the Imp/Baron and the Unmaker.

No, in all seriousness. If you count the non-ModDB ones alongside the moddb ones you really get a ton. I think it mostly all went down with the release of UDK, and the fall of D3W, where after that you couldn't find any sort of help on how to mod it.

Yeah, many mod teams acted shortsighted and opportunistic. Doom 3 was an excellent base to build your mod on, and the Quake 4 engine didn't offer any fundamentally different features (except better MP support, but this was only a point for the MP mods).

I wonder, who were the people who attacked Doom3world.org? The forum went down after a hacking attack, and when the site owners didn't manage to re-open the site it in time, the Doom 3 modding community slowely died off.

Yeah, why would someone hack a Doom 3 site of all things?

Personal vendettas, pettiness, for the sake of it, trolling, because they can, damaging them and their reputation for one reason or another, etc...

They have their own reasons. It's like asking why people still kill each other.

Did it actually re-open after the attack, by the way? Or did it just completely die off afterwards?

I would think that if they didn't manage to recover, the damage dealt was probably too great to mitigate, so that marked its end.

If you follow some threads, you'd see that:

  • They relocated the forum to another site, less memorable by name though. Not sure how active is the forum now.
  • There is a Discord channel. I Googled for a Doom 3 Discord server and it's pointed right from this forum. And it seems fairly active.

Plot twist I guess.

Tetzlaff comment made me think they were completely gone, but I see that may not be the case after all. Thanks for pointing that out, Doom 3 and its community is something I'm still nowhere nearly familiar with.

I regularly visited Doom3World.org and the way I remember it, the site never re-opened under that URL after the attack. Several months (?) later the idtech forum opened as an alternative http://idtechforums.fuzzylogicinc.com/  (See thread http://idtechforums.fuzzylogicinc.com/index.php?topic=2.0 ). That forum is still active, but the community is much smaller. Some people from d3w migrated over, but many left.

Might have a look at that Discord server.

As far as I know Maginot Line Bunker was never intended to be more than a single level. Were there plans to include it into a larger project with a WW1 setting?

As far as I know it must be the single level, but it's not finished. If IT'S FINISHED, this map just sucks. But in russian community this map described as unfinished w.i.p. which is also abandoned.

Russian community have lots of levels and mods not known to mainstream one. Idk why. I have quite some maps from their community as I've been close with 2 of them when modding.  Don't think I can show stuff, but yeah. Wanted to say they are a different beast :) I think they got a Diablo-like mod (top-down) , though I could not get it to run I don't know why.

I might try again soon, as I've learned quite a bit of how Doom 3 works lately.

The answer is simple - most russian modders of old times didn't post anything on english websites. And most of them also didn't know the english well.

I do know good russian classic Doom 1/2 wads which also never known on Doomworld. For the same reason.

I thought Maginot Line Bunker was more of an architectural showcase and not meant to be played as an actual SP level. I know there are 1 or 2 zombies shambling around but that's it.

@PaulRazvan95 and Dexiaz: If you do know some good Russian maps or mods that are not wellknown here, please post about them!

I rummage through Russian Doom 3 sites from time to time because I am aware that they have an active Doom 3 community. But I don't speak Russian and it's quite confusing when everything is written in Cyrillic.

Some good SP levels I found include:

chemstorage

biolabs

armar series

CTT

srvrooms

I don't like to offtop, but I'm too lazy to create new threads related to this, if someone would like to do it - it would be good.

Anyway:

Pshimorph's maps (author of chemstorage)

Delta 6

Engage

Map01 & Level 1 (Yeah, I know, that's stupid names given by same author, but it plays kinda good, at least, you can try it)

Deimos Panic (no download link this time) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWCw2PQlGzI) - the mockery russian total conversion (sometime illegally sold in Russia on disks as Doom 3 DLC) where the first map is almost good quality (with scripts and cutscenes!), but all other maps are just trash made in few minutes.

Deimos Panic is one of the few ``Stand Alone Mods/Games`` that were sold . There are few more if I recall correctly.
