The opening movie for Doom 64

Recommended Posts

I like to think this was the first attempt at an assault on the Mars base. They sent a whole battalion who went in guns a'blazin' and were utterly slaughtered. So then the government is like "they're all dead, what are we gonna do?" and then another guy says "there is one last hope, but he's in retirement". "Get him on the phone!"

John Romero will never retire from trying to make you play Daikatana or Ravenwood Fair, Lucid.

If confronted by John Romero, present your boxed copy of Doom 64 (Either original version or 2020 remaster, both will do) for signing, like it worked so effectively on Doom 3:

More serious answer: I mean, a similar storyline plays out in Doom Eternal, except DoomGuy never retires. He simply cannot, as long as there is hellspawn to go around with.

I never thought of it like that, but since there are so many other DOOM marines, does that mean Co-op was in development at one point?

No; they were for that title sequence and little else. They did briefly muse over deathmatch but decided split-screen would be basically cheating and would kill it.

Then Goldeneye came out and showed them how absolutely wrong they were.

In the words of Aaron Seeler, lead programmer, "quite a regret."

Work did begin on a primarily multiplayer-oriented experience, but it got scrapped due to Quake 64 looming and the publisher feeling the Doom engine was past its prime: https://doomwiki.org/wiki/Doom_Absolution

I think that it is a flashback. I believe that it takes place on Mars, and that the UAC just opened up the portal to hell, but that goes haywire, and when the camera passes the Arachnotron, going to the cyberdemon that shoots its rockets at you, you can clearly see a marine who has successfully escaped the clutches of these beasts, and then he hops onto a portal to Deimos, where some of the weaker demons lurk, which he can take out, but with enough practice, he will be able to take on all these creatures by himself. and now, a year or so later, the game begins.

Just think about it though, all the marines were fighting except for this one, and they all died. I don't remember there being more than one marine in the original DOOM series (except for Final DOOM, but the manual clearly states that the game takes place after the events of DOOM 2, and never once mentions Final DOOM) and now this marine is remembering his year past, and all the men he lost, then the people call him and he is like, "I'll do it for them!" and then he pumps his shotgun and goes to hell!

Well but Doom 64 takes place like 10 years after the original Doom, because Doomguy is older now and suffering PTSD from going to Hell so

many times. And the portal was opened in the very first game, which did not have mancubi or Arachnotrons

But maybe after the motherdemon sent the message to earth, those marines went there with doomguy, and he was the commander, and then he got away (the marine we see escaping around back) and then finds an entrance or a portal like you say to somewhere safe, and then the game begins

I thought it took place directly after DOOM 2 because he was trying to enjoy his last few days alive, then he learns of this mother demon, and decides to sacrifice himself one more time.

One other thing, you don't have to make two posts if you comment twice in a row on the same thing because you could just edit the first one by hitting edit.

Thank you for that tip. And actually Doom 64 is longer after Doom II. The manual for Final Doom heavily implied that some hears have passed since the events of Doom II, Doomguy has been promoted to the Marine Commander, and he has been having nightmares about the creatures he fought it Doom and Doom II (these nightmares are probably what the Master Levels are). And then the Doom 64 manual implied that an even longer amount of time has passed since Final Doom, since Doomguy has had time to see multiple different military doctors and PTSD specialists, and notes that none of their treatments have worked (so enough time has passed to determine that also). So this is long after Final Doom and all portals have finally been closed and dealt with, then the conflict is that there was one demon who was never killed in the initial outbreak on Mars/its moons, who happens to have rejuvenation powers.
