[Solved] OG UnrealEd and Windows 10

Recommended Posts

So, here's the thing: I've been wanting to give Unreal mapping/modding a spin for a few years. I remember trying to boot up UnrealEd back on my previous laptop (Win7) a whopping one time, but it essentially crashed as soon as I did, and I never got around to fixing the issue. And now on a system running Win10, when I'm seriously pining to get into Unreal mapping, UnrealEd keeps complaining about missing files and refusing to launch, and compatibility mode isn't being helpful either.

After sleeping on it, I've come to the conclusion that if I want to try out UnrealEd, I basically have three options:

1. Endure the pain and set UnrealEd up to run on Win10 (probably the least feasible option)

2. Set up a VM (Win98 or WinXP) to run UnrealEd through

3. Go with UnrealEd 2.0 running on Win10 or through a VM

If there are any experienced Unreal modders successfully using UnrealEd on Win10 here, how did you set it up? If you didn't, which method do you use to run UnrealEd?

I thank all responders in advance.

Edited by MFG38 : Thanks, OldUnreal.

Okay, disregard this whole thing. I installed the OldUnreal patch and it apparently updated UnrealEd to a version that runs on Win10 without any additional fiddling.

I was about to suggest this indeed. OldUnreal effectively mitigates most compatibility issues. Be sure to check out the various patches aswell on the site to increase stability.

Lastly, new renderers may work better with your modern machine.

OG UnrealEd? The Unreal version that was done in Visual Basic instead of the UT99 one that was in C++? Fucking YIKES. There's something I don't want to remember!

Yeah, use that OldUnreal patch. It's just plain the most sane thing to do.

And remember: View > Viewports > Configure > OK.
