Unpopular Doom Opinions

Freelook is a good thing actually

It's not a matter of "good or bad". The IOS boss fight was not made with freelook in mind, so the argument doesn't have any meaning whatsoever.

Not sure if unpopular, but 640x400 is at least twice as good as 320x200 resolution, but on widescreen monitors anything x400 is best

I'd dare say it's at least 4 times good!

Yeah because freelook is cheating.

That's just a testament to how simple the boss is. It's more frustrating, than challenging.

The sound that Pinkies make when being shot is rather annoying. Even moreso when multiple enemy types re-use it. That's one thing the Playstation version does better, but I'd rather they make no noise at all, or a soft grunt, or anything that isn't so grating.

My unpopular Doom opinion is that Plutonia 2 actually bears some resemblance to Plutonia 1. I'm not sure why a sizable group of people criticize it for not bearing resemblance to Plutonia 1.

That's just silly, there are at least half a dozen levels that completely copy the aesthetics for one thing.  I thought it did a decent job gameplay wise as well, at least in the early to mid maps. Good WAD in general.

I'd say Plutonia 2 is much more uneven than Plutonia, both in terms of length and difficulty of the maps. Plus some maps are a bit oddly placed in the level order. They were making tributes to the original maps as a starting point but the results are that certain levels are huge in the sequel even though they match the source material well. Pretty tough if you're not playing with saves, and a lot of levels have brutal starts. There are a decent number of accessible ones in the sequel that were very similar to the original's difficulty. I'd say it expanded on it in a tasteful way and stuck to Plutonia's aesthetics pretty closely.

DOOM 64 is better than Both DOOM 1 and 2 in every way.

And DOOM 2016 is a mechanically broken mess.

I will take this to my grave if I need to.

If you didn't beat a map pistol start without saves, you didn't really beat it.

I would even go further: If you don't FDA a map without deaths, you haven't beaten it. Thus, you have only one chance in your life :)

More seriously: If you take the word "beat" and interpret it like "a major achievement a Doom player can strive to reach" with respect to a map, then I don't think the opinion is that unpopular. At least for me, I feel much more satisfied when I beat a map without saves as it's certainly more difficult (at least in larger maps), and in some maps I like and haven't reached this goal in my first tries (even harder ones) I try to reach it eventually practicing it :)

Yeah I'd say it more like "I don't think I beat a map unless I pistol start/saveless it". I don't really care where other people set the bar for themselves enough to deny their claim of beating something casually.

I guess I could demand a demo and hold them to a speedrun type proof policy whenever someone claims to have beaten some map. Just to prevent them getting imaginary clout and belittle whatever accomplishment they actually had. Doesn't really have much of an upside for the effort tbh.

I meant it the way I said it. Saving removes all challenge from the game and takes away consequences for mistakes. Other people can do whatever they want, I don't really care, but that's my unpopular opinion on the matter.

Manual saves, not just in Doom but games in general, are basically cheats, and you're often expected to use them.

If you're expected to use them, then they can't be qualified as cheating.

I'm not a huge fan of saves either! You're practically forced to use them as makeshift checkpoints in long maps, in order to be able to complete them without going insane in the process, and it places the burden of balancing fun and tension on the player - overdo it and you ruin the fun by removing all tension, under-do it and you ruin the fun by having to play too cautiously not to get sent back too far. And this balance is sometimes tricky to get right while playing blind! It is not a huge deal overall, but still something that crosses my mind occasionally.

That said - I often kind of wish DOOM had some sort of official checkpoint system, but that comes with its own set of problems (especially in non-linear maps), so maybe what we have is a good compromise after all. Plus, the save system facilitates all sorts of playstyles for different people (f.eg. not everyone can or wants to spend a lot of time on a single map, so naturally they'll save more often), which is a definite point in its favor!

- Tarnsman's Projectile Hell is a bad name for this megawad, because, objectively, it's a projectile heaven

- I don't like Plutonia experiment. It's gameplay heavily relies on cheap ambushes, many of which you have zero chance of beating on a first try, but most importantly - its texturing is too ugly, like it has no visual aesthetic whatsoever. It feels like this was on very low priority, and texturing was made only to make levels look like... something minimaly passible for a level. I know that Casali worked under heavy time restrictions, but still, Plutonia is the most ugly looking wad i ever seen, with the exception of pure jokewads and shitposts.

It has better gameplay and aesthetics than virtually all 90's WADs except Eternal Doom (in the aesthetics part, I never played ED). You probably aren't familiar with a lot of those if you hold this opinion. They were ahead of nearly everyone else.

I love playing with vertical mouse movement and a capped framerate of 35

City maps are my favorite part of Doom 2

OG plasma gun sound is fun, as is playing Doom with PC speaker emulation

Knee-Deep in the Dead is the most boring Doom 1 episode

Doom 64 is meh

Doom 2016 > Doom Eternal

I think, original IWADs and TNT are looking better. Probably Plutonia's style is just not my thing.
