What's your opinion on Reddit?

Made another thread (you can still see it) where everyone had a lot of opinions on reddit. So thought I'd dedicate a thread just to that.

 

My opinion is that it's good for niche communities. It's nice and there are very few restrictions, for example on the Doom subreddit. Others just suck because while many of their rules are good, there is always that "it depends on the moderator" which really doesn't bode well if they woke up on the wrong side of the bed or especially if they are a shit person in general.

 

Karma system sucks though. I've seen it often just used to downvote whatever one doesn't like, regardless of merit while having a upvote circlejerk for the group think people. Also just the concept of internet points in general; I've seen so many people get suckered into it like it really matters. Who cares that much about your memes? But unfortunately it seems like many do since that's what gets upvoted to high heaven and that's all people are busy with for their precious internet points.

Lotta good info on Reddit but....yeah....that one just made me resent that site.

 

I mean I might just get the app to get away from chrome. God damn it's so annoying.

Reddit is a mixed bag for me.

It's a really good website but some of the people on there are just plain insufferable.

 

For example, the r/darkhumor mods. They no longer moderate the subreddit, instead they make the bot ban you for random shit and when the get heat about it, they pass it off as a joke.

 

Also the website's design is ass.

"Reddit moment" exist for a reason. That and the layout makes me wanna puke.

Some parts of it are *ok* for more niche hobbies and interests because those users are usually slightly older than the age of 14 trying to get internet-karma-chuck-e-cheese points.

 

But then you have other parts of Reddit like the Doom one for example, where insufferable unfunny memes are upvoted to death and actual quality content (like that one thread of the Exultia Master Level) are ignored.

 

Beyond the user base, the lack of user customization makes it soulless and boring to look at.  At least 4chan has an excuse with trying to be anonymous

I've been on reddit for over a decade now. It's... okay. It's kind of a lot of things at once, and much better at some of them (e.g. content aggregator) than others (e.g. non-niche community space). There are problems with moderators being both over-active and under-powered. There's a kind of reddit culture that is not all that pleasant to interact with. There are some stupid half-measures for rules where they need to moderate content (and they should!) but they want to pay lip service to being for free speech -- the guy who got the messages in @RonnieColeman's post is definitely an alt-right homophobic asshole (I'm not going to link his account but you can find it without much work), but suspending someone's account for upvoting content that other people posted is such a weak approach to things.

 

The bigger a subreddit gets, the worse it gets, but this is pretty true for all online communities everywhere.

 

When I was more into making and listening to weird music, I was subscribed to a lot of interesting music subreddits. There are a lot of good ones for specialized content/genres, though the electronic ones often get flooded with people just posting their own stuff.

 

It's great for looking at pictures of cute animals. I'm subscribed to like a dozen various cat-oriented subreddits.

 

The mobile redesign sucks, the official app sucks, and the desktop site redesign sucks worse. I recommend using old.reddit.com and an app like Boost/RIF is fun/Apollo app, or whatever else suits you.

Reddit is my go-to "I want to zone out and have puddle-deep content poured into my eyeballs" source.  As a kind of weird aggregator of news and memes, it fits the bill pretty well.

 

I rarely engage with the front page too much though, it definitely becomes somewhat of a screaming-into-the-void shouting match.  I have seen it described as both way too right wing and way too left wing - it attracts angry rage-at-the-world types for the easy exposure, which in turn attracts overly harsh (and sometimes nonsensical) moderation.  So it is kind of both.

 

The specialist subreddits are much more agreeable though.  If they stay small and focused, they're pretty decent.

Reddit is all around garbage and I realized I have a problem because I go to Reddit, inevitability get mad at the neckbeardyness and then feel emotionally drained only to go back with absentminded boredom a short while later. I think internet messageboards and social media I don’t enjoy are an actual addiction issue for me. It doesn’t help Reddit is my go to for news because 10 years ago it used to break stories and I’m still trapped in the “news? Let me check Reddit” mindset

The only subreddit I use is the Mario Maker reddit. I mainly use it to post my levels I created there. Somehow it's one of those rare subreddits that doesn't post a bunch a random memes. You either have redditors posting their levels, showing off a moment in competitive multiplayer mode, and occasional complaints they have with the game itself.

 

I don't bother looking at the rest of reddit itself. I did look at the doom reddit a few times. I can easily see why people hate that place so much.  I used to browse through the Nihon Falcom reddit, since I do like their games, but I stopped following it ever since it devolved into pointless memes and waifu wars.

Outside of r/Freelance and r/Editors that I've used for work as handy resources, the only other subreddit I found useful or fun was r/MechanicalKeyboards for when I was getting into, you guessed it, mechanical keyboards. But from a community-orientated perspective, I've found Reddit to be pretty unfulfilling. Plus, its lack of customization and other simple functions that you can find on other sites and forums makes for a pretty dull experience. If you're looking for some specific information, it can be a useful resource. But if you're looking for a place that's really fun to use... eh, you can find better.

Reddit has become one of the most garbage and annoying websites on the internet. It used to be a great place to ask quick specific questions and get good and helpful answers. Now it's a cesspool of bullshit.

 

Reasons why I loathe Reddit in it's current state include but are not limited to:

• Downvote trolling
• Karma requirements
• Karma whoring
• Overzealous automoderation bots
• Arrogant moderators
• Power hungry moderators
• Moderators in general
• Too many rules on every sub
• Rediculous rules that are anti-discussion
• Your post can be removed for anything
• Your post can be removed for breaking a rule you didn't know existed
• Your post can be removed for not using a flair
• Your post can be removed for not tagging it right
• Your post can easily be ignored and fall off the radar within minutes
• You might only get troll responses to a serious question
• Nobody replies to your posts
• They only care about memes
• They don't give a fuck about serious discussions
• If you don't agree with the opinions and rules of a sub, you are banned
• You can get shadow banned
• They constantly push you to use their stupid app nobody wants
• The redesign they did and the mobile view is obnoxious (thankfully old.reddit still exists)
• It randomly freezes Chrome on Android completely
• It's shit

As you can see, I indeed hate Reddit.
