Nintendo's biggest data leak ever (aka GigaLeak)

Recommended Posts

I expect this to cause 1:1 illegal Wii/Wii U clones to flood the market eventually.

I very much doubt that because that would mean literal hardware clones would be possible because of this leak.

This leak primarily centres around source code for various games.

It might be easier to see unofficial homebrew PC ports of these games appearing, but 1:1 literal hardware clones? Nah. To replicate the Latte GPU in Wii U you will need more than this leak (Because this is about games, not hardware)

Anybody used Nintendo gigaleak code fragments for their DOOM source port yet?

Well this is pretty cool, i haven't really played much of these games but i always find scrapped content interesting.

Looking forward to the legally dubious pc ports.

Ha, serves them right for going after untold amounts of fanworks.   And for requiring four Wiimotes and four Wii U controllers if you want to be able to play four player Wii and Wii U games on the same system.   I'm curious whether this was stolen by hacker(s) or leaked by disgruntled employee(s).

Interesting leaks to say the least.

Having said that, with a bit of googolfu you can find a lot of NDAed internal documentation regarding Wii and Wii U.

The latter machine has had a very long discussion detailing what the exact specifications of the Latte GPU are. Chipworks supplied a die shot even and even that was not enough to determine everything. Is it 320 shader cores, or 160?

As far as i come to understand, the NDA documentation lists the exact specifications, so colour my surprise that this has not popped yet.

Well that's kinda douchie for Nintendo to keep secret even the extent of capabilities.   Guess they didn't want people to know how much they cheaped out compared to competitors.  Funny since Sony was notorious for being cheap themselves: PS1 having about half the ram of Saturn and PS2 having about half the ram of the Dreamcast coming about a year after it.

To the public, that is. Not to developers, obviously. Hackers (Marcan) had to determine the CPU clockspeeds and GPU clock, but the GPU is in such an unusual configuration that even with a closed up die shot of the actual sillicon it has been very difficult to determine what the hardware specs actually are.

Its a unique design really. If you need any analogus equivalent that looks vaguely similar, then a Radeon HD 6450 would be it.

Yeah, and trying to DMCA the leaks will cause the Streisand effect.

It's actually done by a guy who wanted to flex at everybody (his Discord server members, Nintendo, and FBI, to be precise).

Most of the tools found in the leak seem to be designed for Apple IIGS, 68K Macs, PPC Macs, or MS-DOS

Truly one of the more childish motives to do these leaks. Putting your self-worth at the hands of several propetairy source codes for temporary e-street cred.

Ways to use the tools

For the Apple IIGS ones probably use https://apple2.gs/plus/

For the MS-DOS ones use DOSBOX

For the PPC and 68K Macs use either Mini vMac or Basillk II for the 68K Macs and for the PPC Macs use Sheepshaver or a virtual machine

@MLGari I know these files have spread like wildfire, but is it even okay to share the tools to decrypt some of them here?

Nintendo, as much as I love their older first party titles, kinda deserves to be slapped around a little. They are in a perpetual state of denial when it comes to modding, game distribution, and sharing of development crumbs. Their “walled garden” approach should frankly be named and shamed more often.

id software proved forever ago that you can release old, unused assets (that are too dated to be meaningful for future development anyway) and it will cause exactly 0 harm to the company financially. Gabe Newell understands that accessibility, in terms not only of platform but of cost, is the best way to prevent piracy, but Nintendo thinks the best way is charging through the nose for ancient software and a tidal wave of DMCAs and lawsuits. Which is the same reaction they have to modding. As a modder myself, it’s fair to say that cuts very deep into the love I once had for them.

Also, they’re just flat out stupid so often. Because of some weird old hangups about honor and shame, they generally refuse to take notes about what their competitors are doing right, and this lack of willingness to learn from others has resulted in inferior hardware. Nintendo has yet to understand how online gaming works even after 14 years of “”trying”” at it. Microsoft got it right and kept it right as of about 2003..

So yeah, when an entity so old, disgustingly influential and so absurdly rich still refuses to learn the most basic of basic lessons, it’s super hard for me to feel bad at all. Especially about assets SO ancient that they honestly should have shown some of by their own fruition. All just seems like the natural long term results of the ivory tower approach they’ve always taken, to me..

Nintendo deserves a lot of slaps, indeed. They're iconic, but they have proven to be very big fans of anti-consumer practices.

Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Nintendo one of the biggest culprits when it came to closing down emulator and CD-ROM websites?

Because I remember, I sadly do: https://www.emuparadise.me/emuparadise-changing.php

If even Eviltronic Arts can get the memo (cf. the goodies gallery in the C&C remaster)...

I don't really feel bad for nintendo given reasons mentioned (and hey, it's very cool from an archival standpoint to have all this old work visible, people will find lots of cool things and come to enjoy these games even more), but I also don't think this is a catastrophic event that's going to destory the company. I'm confident they'll survive. Meanwhile we get lots of cool things to look at now.

One of the emails in the leak says someone at Argonaut Games was apparently distributing porn around the office during the making of Star Fox 2

Someone's getting fired.

The FBI already caught him, and he also has to pay the fine to Nintendo.

@Endless Oh yeah, that was sad actually. Emuparadise was one of my introductions to retro gaming back in early 2010's, and one of my friends was also as sad as ever during the closure back then.

I remember that I was quite sad about the news because I just managed to install a PS2 emulator on my PC, my favorite console, I wanted to revive all the old games that are no longer available (unless you pay about 150 dollars on ebay) and right at that moment I am discovering the death of emuparadise. I've never managed to finish Silent Hill 2 or 3, and I've never played 1 and 4, games that I'm dying to play but it's almost impossible to get them legally in my country.

One of the former presidents of Nintendo said that online gaming is for the depressed, so I am not surprised.

The company wants to do business like a typical toy company would do, which does not work well for completely digital goods like video games in the modern age.

So it turns out "L IS REAL 2401" was a prophecy, seeing as Luigi was revealed to have been in Mario 64...24 years and 1 month from SM64's release. This is WILD, my childhood is freaking out right now.
