Tributes to Ty Halderman and John Anderson

Recommended Posts

This is a noble goal.

I'm not just talking about Ty Halderman and John Anderson, but also the part about those who died long ago. Without those generations we wouldn't be where we are now, nor enjoy the standard of living we have.

When you look back at what some people accomplished (especially under duress) it really does inspire you. The dead should always be remembered, regardless of beliefs or religion. It shows that person has honour and good character.

You have my utmost respect for this.

Thank you so much for your kind words, Final Verdict. They mean a lot to me!

Agreed, the great people in life who are unfortunately no longer here to improve this world deserve to be remembered, especially for their positive contributions.

Thank you.

Why are people so excited to populate databases for private companies to exploit/paywall/remove/alter as they see fit?

This is a question for all of us, Doomers, who after almost 30 years, still play this game, recommend it, and make new maps, maps that inspire people to make more, and to buy a game that is almost 30 years old? And i'm not pointing out that, probably, the original creators don't receive much for it, right now, as the ip holder is a massive gaming company.

Or is a question for Obake and his passion?

Maybe there isn't a non-commercial alternative, as desirable as that might be? I dunno, I'm unfamiliar with genealogy as a hobby. Perhaps @obake can give his thoughts. I do agree that we should be concerned about the commercial exploitation of civic data. It's the kind of shit that's becoming increasingly difficult to avoid, and is quite insidious by design, such as offering free services that also act as data-harvesting exercises.

Addressing the underlying issues might be beyond the scope of this thread.

The commercial nature of the database (as an asset to be bought) is concerning. The ad revenue being generated on other people's information is concerning. The wiki-esque design is concerning (the person creating the article seeks "clout" credit and maintains a sort of administrative ownership of the article). The potential for the data to be locked down is concerning. The past history of ancestry using people's data for private research/investigation is concerning.

Imagine being a family member and trying to correct some error, or unhappy with the whole article, the headache and work to get the "author" or some administrator on the horn for some change/removal (and likely you will be ignored or told to go screw).

I looked up some other articles on the site, and they are pulling photos and text from copyrighted sources like newspapers too... just so many points of fail. I'm guessing by the edited-out "third wonderful figure" in OP, that someone already told him to pound sand.
