What is the best/famous unofficial commercially released wad?

Recommended Posts

I'm under the impression that "commercially released" means it's official... so therefore... none.

If you mean non-id created but commercially released then that leaves us with TNT and Plutonia. I'm not aware of any others? (correct me somebody if I'm wrong)...

Hell To Pay is the best commercial release out there along Perdition's Gate.

Made by Wraith Corporation its a duology of megawads analogous to Final Doom.

Considering it's now been added to the Classic Doom update, I feel like Back to Saturn X is the obvious choice here.

I don't know if I'd count that as a commercial release, though, seeing as it's a free downloadable add-on.

Aha, but you see, MFG, it's technically commercial as people out there still purchase Classic Doom to get it to it if they haven't already!

They are on par to what Final Doom offered.

Hell to Pay is an adventure style megawad with really cool and challenging maps, much like TNT: Evilution is.

And Perdition's Gate has some really cool, hard and short maps similar to Plutonia but less unforgiving and with a cool story.

Then there is also "The Lost Episode of Doom" a three episode wad for UDoom.

Its cool as a curiosity, but those maps doesn't aged too well.

I can't find any online source that mentions the stream version having btsx.

*steam version

If you download Doom 2 right now, it comes with the Bethesda port where you can have BtSX as a free addon.

HacX, Hell to Pay, Perdition's Gate and The Lost Episodes of Doom. Everything else is just shovelware.

For me, NRFTL slightly beats out Plutonia, but I haven't played Plutonia in a long while, I'd have play through all of them again to make it fair.

For actual unofficial add-ons, Hell to Pay might be top for "best" but I think HacX would beat it out on "famous".

Chex Quest may or may not deserve a mention, being stand-alone.

Unofficial WADs instantly brings my mind to those "1000 LEVELS SUPER DISKS" that had like a ton of levels downloaded from the Idgames archive, like Joel Vinesauce streamed that one time. Reminds me of a hockey arena themed deathmatch level he found on one. So lets go with that. They're available for download on archive.org I think.

“Unofficial commercially released wad” is confusing terminology, lol

Since the criteria isn’t super clear to me I’ll just say NRFTL. As far as “endorsed addons” or whatever we want to call them are concerned I find it head and shoulders above the others (TNT, Plut, Master Levels, etc)

I guess you are talking about stuff like this or this, basically anything that was commercially released without id software's blessing.

If that's so then i can't say which one is the best but the ones i mentioned here are most likely some of the worst.
