The BFG - is it a practical military weapon?

Recommended Posts

If you define practical as "being able to commit 10 different warcrimes at the press of a button", then yes.

It's just good that such a devistating weapon doesn't exist in real life.

the thing about the bfg is that its the definition of overkill. It takes a while to charge up but for no discernable advantage. Imagine trying to use exclusively the bfg against enemies w/ the health of hitscanners but damage output that could kill you in seconds. The ideal option would be something that targets and kills things quickly. the bfg is so purposeless in any context aside from giant monsters that im suspicious as to whether that was secretly the real reason the uac invented it...

Well, exactly.  They did cybernetically enhance various demonic creatures, they had to have some big f***in' guns on hand in case they got loose

In terms of it being a actual military weapon is not practical. First of all, the BFG has the ability to harm others unintentionally with its "Tracer Ability", meaning that if you put a BFG in a battlefield, you can basically harm your own unit (Theres no such friendly fire option in real life so yeah)

Now in terms of it being a fictional Military weapon, it could be practical. I mean I guess the BFG may only harm demons, not humans

Actually, a crude implementation of a BFG could be done as follows: something that shoots a relatively slow-moving projectile with the exploding power of a typical rocket (the "big ball") followed by 25 aimed, accurate projectiles. The latter could be accomplished with e.g. 25 shotguns aimed by a computer, each shooting a single, solid slug round. Granted, not much on the visual candy side, but the damage would all be there. So basically imagine a fugly weapon system that looks like a rocket launcher + 25 shotguns + sensors on a cart.

The BFG is like an extremely overpowered siege weapon except it is handheld. the only limiting factors it has are price and weight. But other characters than Doomguy can carry it so it isn't outwordly heavy.
