Any lesser known short but sweet wads?

Recommended Posts

Right now i don't have enough time to play any megawads or something of that style so I would like to know about some shorter wads. Also I already know about usual recommendations like Epic or Winter's Fury, so how about some more unknown wads.

Can I plug my own WADs?

Wyrmwood is an eleven map WAD that was pretty well received.

Chrono-Displacement Labs is a fairly short single-map WAD I made to demonstrate the very cool D4V mod.

Horse's Cradle is a very linear and relatively large single-map WAD.

There's two maps but the wad ends in like 15 minutes flat, neither map hits 20 monsters. Cannot play in Z-ports (ZDoom, GZDoom, etc.)

There are quite a bunch of short, amazing and punchier mapsets.

-Tangerine Nightmare is just 8 maps long with a bonus and a stop progression map. Some of the last maps are a bit longer than the previous.

-Perdition's Gate, 32 maps, but really short and wonderful to play.

-The Rebirth and midipack, another 32 mapsset that is really short.

-Glaive and Glaive 2, really short and challenging maps inspired by Scythe.

-SlayeR, amazing episode for Doom2 that is really challenging.

-Suspended in Dusk, four vanilla maps that will left you mouth open. Really atmospheric and challenging.

-Scimitar, another mapset inspired on Scythe

I will be adding more as i'm on cellphone and sometimes my comments time out and they didn't save for unknown reason.

Posting from an old topic (Hellebarde and Survive in Hell are megawads though, though the former is split into 3 episodes of 10 maps each iirc):

Ezekiel is a really awesome set of 9 maps by 40oz, one of the authors of UAC Ultra. Very distinctive play style and a lot of nasty encounters, reminded me of Hell Revealed 2 kinda. I think the only reason this slipped under the radar is because 40oz is banned from DoomWorld for some reason, cause it's a damn good mapset.

Hellebarde is a neat little megawad for GZDoom, it's divided into 3 episodes a la Scythe 1: Gothic Earth, Lunar, and Gothic Hell/Medieval. The main gimmick is a miniboss/boss at the end of each level, with some of these appearing later as normal enemies. Some of the bosses can be a little obnoxious, but it's a fun idea. The standard Doom cast is prominent all through-out too. The mod uses 3D floors extensively also, but not really any other GZDoom features IIRC. Overall, a GZDoom megawad that still feels very classic.

Violence is a set of 4 maps by AD_79. Basically just 4 solid maps with a purple color scheme, it plays in a style similar to Valiant, from which it burrows some assets from I think.

Survive in Hell is a fun Hell Revealed-inspired WAD, although a fair bit easier. The first 2 episodes can be a little rocky though. Not bad, usually, but unpolished. The various knockoff HR and HR2 levels don't help matters. The third episode is where the WAD really hits its stride, easily containing the best maps in the set. If the rest of the mapset were as good as the final third, this would really be something special, but as-is it's still well worth checking it out. I hope they do this WAD for the DW megawad sometime actually.

Tangerine Nightmare is an absolutely awesome 9+1 mapset by the French Doom Community. It's gloriously orange all throughout, and it looks and plays excellently the whole way through. I'm not surprised it didn't win a Cacoward (2018's Cacoward winners are REALLY good, so it had some fierce competition), but I am completely amazed it wasn't even a runner-up. Does the review committee hate the color orange? :P

Joe-Ilya's Hell Clash EP2 replacement for Doom comes to mind.

Hell Clash has a low score rating. I didn't care to read the reviews and downloaded it. I just wanted to have fun no matter how bad it is. When I finished playing it, I thought it was an enjoyable experience. Lots of outdoor areas, fun gameplay, and texture combinations were not used offensively on my eyes.

I went and read the reviews after completing Hell Clash. Most of the reviews typed were "90s aesthetics" and "not interesting enough." I'm not familiar with Joe-Ilya's works other than 64kb vanilla project and unknowingly some of the DBPs I've played. I think I'm just not into the meme of rating his wads low but Hell Clash in particular I thought was fun to play. If anyone is into "90s aesthetics" mapping then give Hell Clash a try. I'll admit, starting map01 made me laugh a bit.

More recommendations:
Rowdy Rudy's Revenge, 10 maps - Vanilla wad for Doom 2 with fun dehacked sorcery. Keeps baseline Doom gameplay.
Doomed Space Wars, 12 maps - Zdoom mapset for Doom 2. Keeps baseline Doom gameplay with visual enchantments.
Asbestos Queen, 7 Maps - Boom wad for Doom 2.
No Sleep For The Dead, 9 maps - Vanilla wad for Doom EP1.
Dinner, 9 maps - Vanilla wad for Doom EP2 made in 1996.

Edited by Swalzi : "Joe makes another joke wad." replaced with "not interesting enough."
