windoom help

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am using April 13 1995 version of windoom.

I enabled mouse from the options and it captured it, but now I can't go to options and change anything, mouse is not available, always captured.

Using Alt-O (O for Options) doesn't work either.

Deleted the folder and re-extracted a fresh copy, still same.

Where does it even save the config file in windows 7 ?

I want to delete it's config file but can't find it anywhere.

There is no windoom.cfg in the folder.

Thanks in advance.

The first question: Why are you using Windoom in particular? Its, after all, a 15 25 year old program.

Vanilla doom.exe and thousands other retro programs exist that are even older, yet people still use them.

Do you know the answer, or not?

After how many questions are you going to reveal it to me?

You are always being so helpful.

You aren't answering my question. There is nothing wrong with using Windoom, but given its age and the OS you try to run it with (and thus running into issues) makes me ask what particular reason you have to use it.

I would have to check first.* Since its a 1995 program, it will likely store it in a specific location. I have checked the following already:

  • In the same directory as WinDoom. (It probably isn't.)
  • In the roaming directory. Often enough programs put .cfg files in different places then you expect.
  • In the Program files directory. No dice there also.
  • In the System/System32 directory. Atleast here there is no cfg either.
  • in the C:/Users directory. Try performing a search for windoom.cfg there.

But in case you want something extremely similar but which works on Windows 7 just fine, may i suggest DJDoom. Its a literal port of Linux Doom to Windows, no frills, but it uses DirectDraw and will thus run fine on your system.

There is also a 2015 update of WinDoom, by @Martin Howe. Find that here.

*EDIT: Alright, i replicated your exact issue by saving settings, reinstalling it and being unable to do jack. When you enable the mouse and are thus unable to go back to options, use the Pause key when in game. This will bring up the cursor again and allows you to change settings again. This only works when using 640x400. In full screen and with mouse enabled, it becomes exceedingly difficult if not impossible to bring up the menu.

Reinstallation has no usage here. It will remain stuck. I will look on further.

Being snarky does not help.

There is a 7zip of WinDoom here that might be of use.

Hey that actually worked. Thanks a lot!   :)

I use a laptop with no Pause/Break key but I had a usb keyboard lying around and used it ti press Pause.

**********************************

And actually before all that I just did this:  windoom.exe -config 111.cfg

While 111.cfg was empty and it worked.

But I still wanted to know how to make it work without an extra config file.

So on my older laptop, I checked the number of files is all folder in C drive.  (first level folders, not the ones under them)

Then I run windoom for the first time and change some settings in it and exit.

Check number of files again : no difference!  Nothing was added.

My guess is that it uses some NT user DLL file or something to store it's settings.

But yeah, doesn't matter now, thanks again.

So thankfully that means you weren't in full screen.

Given it saves settings, it clearly is written to something... and the Wiki mentions a cfg. I am just not sure where this is located in Windows 7. There is a dll file in the folder and a log file but none of that constitutes a configuration file.

I do know that enabling mouse and full screen will have a detrimental effect on the stability however. After killing the process and restarting, i have gotten on seperate occasions:

  • Two instance of WinDoom being started
  • No start at all
  • Starting WinDoom but no screen update, so you only hear sound effects and a locked up mouse
  • Desktop outside of WinDoom having broken screen refreshes, meaning you can't close the process

Clearly you do not want to run it in full screen but the high res 640x400 works just fine.

By the way, it's not 15 years old program, but a 25-26 years old program  :)

As a child of the 90s who thinks 2005 was not that long ago, i should be forgiven.
