Is there community policy around potentially X-rated content in WADs?

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

So I've begun work on Dissension II and I'm working on a map called "Chaos Undivided" which for anyone who's familiar with the Warhammer 40,000 universe will understand the reference. Basic jist of the map is there are 4 arenas, each dedicated to one of the Chaos gods - Khorne, Tzeentch, Nurgle and Slaanesh. Slaanesh is the god of pleasure, pain, excess, greed etc...

Is there a community or official policy on something like a texture or a decoration with exposed breasts or anything considered potentially pornographic? I'm not talking about hardcore porn here, more along the lines of statue decorations and stone textures of succubi or demonic sirens, angels etc.

What's the consensus on this kind of thing in a WAD? Should I reconsider my ideas or is this okay? :/

It should be fine. Besides at Doom's level of resolution, the pixelation censorship is built-in! Unless you use high-res textures of course. Then it's only really raise eyebrows if you use high-res only for the suggestive assets.

As a new user myself, I think if you see H-Doom anywhere then its fine in that case.

If what you intend to use fits in the theme and is suited for the map or atmosphere, I say go for it. You should be fine. Tasteful. Appropriate.

It's a different story if you were to just pull an actual X rated pic from somewhere and randomly used it as a texture. That's where I imagine most draw the line.

Yes, that's what I'm going for. It's intended to be themetic and artistic. I'm serious about my maps and what I'm trying to convey. I'm not going to shock factor.

This kind of thing...

None of that, or anything you are describing is remotely x-rated. That's World of Warcraft levels of skin exposure.

Echoing what @TheMagicMushroomMan said, nothing in what you showed here would be considered x-rated. Especially if that type of art is not used gratuitously.

Incidentally, there is a folder in the idgames archives for x-rated content.

Ok cool. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't going to get banned or flagged or anything like that. I understand the Doom community is worldwide and encompasses people of all ages and just wasn't sure if or what the limits are with this kinda of imagery. Thanks for clarifying for me :)

As long as you don't write a story about Doomguy fucking the back of John Romero's rotten fly-infested head, your stuff won't get banned. I know, because that's what I did :)

I’d say you are more than fine with the pictures you showed :-)

Might even be able to get away with a little more (nips might be alright - plus you can always just add to the txt document that you support the “free the nip” movement :-P).

Below the waist - probably a no go. Might be ok if it’s done really tastefully (think renaissance art) but would probably steer clear just to be on the safe side.

Full on Pr0n - You are definitely getting banned :-P

It could potentially be really interesting to have a wad or map based around the theme of lust, especially if done with subtlety. Considering lust & desire are among the most powerful drivers of human motivations and emotions, it could give a certain multidimensional edge to a map. Specially considering most Doom wads have been historically one dimensional, focusing on themes of rage and hatred exclusively (killing demons, hell is bad).

Sensuality combined with fear (another strong emotion and usually the base ingredients of dreams coming from the darker human mind), could bring interesting results aswell.

Shure, why not.

The gimmick of that wad only spans one (part of) map, the result of wich I hardly call subtle. So in the end its just as one dimensional as the concept of endlessly killing demons.

Since the wad was made by 2 adolescent Czech males who were probably taking the piss on the whole concept anyway, the only waste to me is in the fact that the word Kama Sutra is now claimed by something which for 99,5% contentwise has nothing to do with it  (even that one joke-map in the end has nothing to do with it in my view : p )

Kama sutra as a concept deserves much better, since it represents a celestial bond between the feminine and the masculine.

If you really take things to their base elements, then grabbing a stimpack or waterbottle represents a feminine element in the game because the player finds relieve in taking it whenever wounded. Killing an enemy is (quite) a masculine element. Killing an enemy and then taking the health item is basically taking what you desire (the feminine) by first having to express the masculine (killing an enemy).
