I just beat Deus Ex.

Recommended Posts

I beat Deus Ex, normal, no enhancements(not augmentations, of course I had those), no renderer replacements. The models were low quality but not the game. I loved it. Should I get Invisible War or something?

having played through how much of the game? The first time I played Deus Ex (I was new to the concept of "immersive sim" or "action RPG") I easily missed 60% of the game content. It wasn't until I read/watched stuff online I realized how much I had left to play ("what, you can save X?" "what there's items at the bottom of Y?" "what, you can get the key to that door and talk to Z?" "what, you could kill Q from the beginning?").

Didn't know the original game had mods. Huh, might give them a spin in that case, if I revisit the game in the near future. Are there other worthy mods?

As for IW, what I've heard about that game is that it's not good. Not exactly terrible, but missing most if not everything that made the original great.

Deus Ex: Revision is on Steam so that could be one to check out. I've played a tiny amount so I can't attest to the quality but it seems worth trying.

The main complaint I've heard levied at Invisible War is its incredibly, incredibly stupid universal ammo. Yes, universal ammo. Naturally, rockets use more of this ammo than bullets, etc.

Can't say I've played it myself though.

It is indeed pretty good, I've actually started playing it this weekend.

Or more specifically, TNM 2.0, which ships as an optional addon for Revision. Truly self-aware that mod, heh.

I tried revision and GMDX but both added too many things for my taste. Will try again later.

yep. I have the feeling that universal ammo could be well implemented into a working idea. Sadly, in Invisible War universal ammo just means once you ran out of ammo in one weapon you just ran out of ammo in all of them. It makes it pointless to carry more than 1 weapon (hell, the best weapon in the game is that poison pistol thingy anyway).

On the contrary, I have played every Deus Ex game there is and I highly suggest never playing Invisible War not because it is a sub par sequel to the original but because I think it is a legitimately terrible game.

I'd second another playthrough of the base game with a totally different build. Explosives are crazy fun, and there's stuff like the drone aug which I never even used until recently.

Well I just realized I never answered if you should get Invisible War. I'm a fan of the series and I have played everything there is excepting Deus Ex Go.

Yes, play Invisible War. It's cannon, and it's not as bad as they say. It has a few good ideas and improvements over the first one.

BUT, it's a very small game. The gameplay is super dumbed down, the engine has dynamic lighting and nothing else worth of value. Forget about the expansive city environments you traversed in DE 1: cities are super small and there are "doors" everywhere to load into the next part of the city.

Still, I enjoy it for what it is.

Or, you could play Human Revolution. It's somehow a "reboot" (the logo is different, the aesthetic design is different, has a yellow tint rather than a blueish one. What I mean is they tried to mark a difference) and it's almost as good as the first one.

Then it comes Mankind Divided which, although cannon, is also disappointing, small, and rushed just like Invisible War was.

And you also have "The fall" out there, which is a mobile Unity game ported to PC which was worse before it got patched

Once you fully upgrade that augmentation it is utterly devastating. It can take down anything. It's horribly slow to begin with but it's definitely worth upgrading.
