Eskiguy Posted November 9, 2020 Good day, recently I've finished the classic doom games again. except for 64, and I've really been on the fence of getting it. but I'm not sure if getting the PC port is worth it, I don't know if its like on steam with DOOM I and II where you get both the original dos versions and the Bethesda ports. and I'm worried you can only play the Bethesda version, where they change a lot of stuff like the health packs. and other stuff. I really don't like how Bethesda ports the Original doom games. and I'm worried that Doom 64 is just the same. is the port really worth it or should I just use a wad of Doom 64 for the other games, or just better off playing the original N64 version lol. thank you. 0 Share this post Link to post
seed Posted November 9, 2020 Just now, Eskiguy said: both the original dos versions and the Bethesda ports There is no such thing as a DOS version here. Doom 64 was originally a new entry in the series available exclusively on the Nintendo 64. The Steam remaster is the first time it became officially available on PC, ignoring the Doom 64 EX, DZDoom, Retribution, and the Absolution TC which are either fan ports or recreations. It's also not "Done by Bethesda". It was developed by Nightdive Studios, known for the Turok remasters, System Shock remasters, the upcoming SS remake, Blood Fresh Supply, and more. Bethesda acted like a publisher. As for changes, there aren't any notable changes here, which were done for good reason anyway. Only the medkits have blue crosses instead of red, but that's about it. Quote is it worth it? tl;dr Yes. 4 Share this post Link to post

And let's not forget that the core of the remaster team are all Doomworld regulars who've worked on various Doom-related projects long before they were recruited by Nightdive, such as Kaiser (Absolution TC, Doom64 EX, several other console Doom projects, and more than a few levels for all Doom engine games) and Quasar (Eternity Engine, Calico, Doom Wiki maintainer). 3 Share this post Link to post
El Juancho Posted November 10, 2020 it's my favorite classic doom (vanilla levels) 0 Share this post Link to post
chungy Posted November 10, 2020 The port is excellent and totally worth it, especially if you enjoy Doom 64. The game itself... I think Doom 64 is the weakest entry of the classic series, but hey, it's still not too bad. 1 Share this post Link to post
BoxY Posted November 10, 2020 Other than a couple of minor annoyances, it's an excellent port, definitely one of the best ways to play Doom 64. Just make sure to set -skipmovies unless you want to enjoy a solid hour of studio logo splashes every time you launch it. 1 Share this post Link to post
GraphicBleeder Posted November 10, 2020 It's pretty good, and worth it in my opinion. Though, keep in mind it is very vanilla (outside of WASD and mouse support). So if you like full freelook and stuff like jumping offered in some source ports, you won't find that here. 0 Share this post Link to post
