Eternal at The Game Awards.

Recommended Posts

In case anyone cares for this event, DOOM Eternal is nominated for:

  • Game of the year (also Animal Crossing, Final Fantasy VII, Ghost of Tsushima, Hades, The Last of Us 2)
  • Best action game (also NIOH 2, Streets of Rage 4, Hades, Half Life Alyx)
  • Best music/score (also Final Fantasy VII, Ori and the WIll of The Wisps, Hades, The Last of Us 2)
  • Best audio design (also Half Life Alyx, Resident Evil 3, Ghost of Tsushima, Hades, The Last of Us 2)

I would be happy with at least two awards out of these four and a live performance of Mick Gordon.

I'm glad it got nominated. Favorite game of the year by a long shot. I'll bet Hades TLOU gets most of the win, though.

Welp, here are the results so far (I wouldn’t be surprised if Ghost of Tsushima or Miles Morales took GOTY but seriously how is TLOU2 overtaking Doom Eternal):

Rigged election. The Last of Us 2 won 6 awards at The Golden Joystick Awards and Ghost of Tsushima won none. You press the Doom button and the vote goes to The Last of Us.

Guys, I have an urgent prediction to make. I think Doom Eternal is going to win Game Of The Year. See why below:

Spoiler

The Game Awards event is being held on December 10th. IT IS DOOM'S BIRTHDAY!

Jokes on them, Ghosts of Tsushima is on top now.

The only reason I even check The Game Awards is for the announcements, as far as I know fan votes only make up a small percentage in the overall results, the rest is determined by the Jury. This is more like a contest for which title is being talked about the most than anything.

also TLOU2 has buff abby so that wins by default.

Best Action and Best Soundtrack. GOTY is a pipe dream, even if it isn't rigged.

TBF I did vote TLoU2 for the Accessibility award. Credit where it's due.

VGA's are mostly advertisement and with the celebrety guests and all that stuff, they go to that "non videogame" area that indicates how people in the industry may feel embarrased of the medium they work for.

I feel like the whole point might as well be cringe compilations by Crowbcat.

TLOU2 may win for "moving the medium forward" or something in that area.

Completely snubbed. There weren't really even any decent reveals.

At least we got the London Philharmonic covering The Only Thing They Fear Is You.

Otherwise, that was three hours of my life.

I think it's ok. Doom Eternal can be the holy grail for doom players (eventually maybe an exaggeration, but a pretty good single player technical shooter) but is not too accessible to the standard audience and of course not innovative at all (it's the doom 2016 formula with improvements). I think we unpacked it enough in other threads, it offers a phenomenal gunplay and music score, a engine pushing any hardware to his very limit with no frame rate cap, but when it comes to atmosphere, story and exposition it is lacking.

It's made to appeal a doom audience, but not the all audience, and I think it's perfectly fine. Otherwise it would appeal a wider audience but not the core doom audience.

Disagree on that point. Name another arena fps that requires not just good accuracy but constant resource management and different approach to enemies.

The definition "arena fps" usually indicates multiplayer shooters like Quake Champions or Unreal tournament. Are we on the same page here?

Yeah, i realized that my wording was poor here - i mean modern "old school" fps.

I see, unfortunately I'm not a person that plays extensively this kind of games, so I wouldn't be able to answer your question. I can think of F.E.A.R and of course, back in the days, Hexen that has weapons tailored to fight specific monsters better (but not one shot them) and needed a weapon swap since the quantity of mana (ammo) present in the game was indeed scarce. Surely Doom Eternal did not invent the wheel. Maybe it reinvented it, but after all is the same concept we know from ages.

In case you wondered why most people think TGA is a steaming pile of execrable garbage. It's run by game journos who'd rather play movies, and unfortunately they hold 90% of the voting power.

And this is why we well know that TLOU was going to receive all the awards.

Having slept off a bit, I can now say that I'm glad Doom did not receive any awards at this embarrassment of a show. We love you Marty, Hugo, Mick and the rest of id for your hard work on making Doom Eternal great.

Also Naughty Dog affiliation.

Even if you liked TLOU2, you have to admit how funny it is that they didn't even hide it.

The only category it lost an award was the one with fan/outsider votes, but the rest feels like a very centralized clique with a mixture of terrible taste and payed heavily by Sony.

It should be known that VGA's are always a shitshow but this one felt specially bad and hilarious.

I do worry if ZeniMax looks at this and thinks "Eternal wasn't good enough" and something bad could happen.

I also wonder how will TLOU2's awards impact Sony, who might as well just make only cinematic games and make the most American centric comments while every Japanese dev under a PS studio just leaves to form their own games outside of PlayStation.

Even though in later years, TLOU2 could reach a path where its legacy is Twitter accounts of "characters that suffered more than Ellie" and /v/ meme templates of cutscenes shots (Bioshock Infinite's legacy in comparison was uncanny Elizabeth SFM porn and i doubt even those with muscle girl fetish will care about Abby when her model and voice is like 2/3 real people fused and almost any "photorealistic" game will visually age badly that even Death Stranding right now looks kinda weird) while Doom Eternal's impact in both the series and outside is noticeable enough that even the "boomers" that hate the game will touch some wad with Eternal influence in it and if we're lucky, we could get some proper modding tools and methods of preserving and accessing anything, even the timed event based content and online features.

TLOU2 also may rely on political internet arguements as some sort of anchor, while Eternal has enough to be talked about that nobody even cares about the "mortally challenged" bit anymore.

Even if you don't like Eternal, you still see it as a game and not a "platform" for some weird discussions.

Would be even funnier if the later PlayStation console gen gets some fucked up architecture that makes it harder to preserve/access previous gen games and TLOU2 is affected by it, so they remake the game with changes its fans may not like.

Maybe i'm biased and misinformed while writing this.

Either way, i still think that Bioshock Infinite effect could happen.

Ah damn, the judges couldn't get past the second Arachnotron. I've seen a Journalist reach the third one once.

What Doom Eternal is sorely lacking is a good lesbian kiss, perhaps between the UAC spokeswoman and a resurrected Dr. Olivia Pierce.
