Welcome to the first ever iteration of the DWMaster Endurance Tournament! The Doom competition where your will to live and desire for victory shall be tested to the limit! Plus, how of a fast Doomer you are. Here we challenge ourselves to the maximum test of persistence by playing all kinds of episodic WADs to full fledges megawads; a new one each month, alongside a lovely challenge WAD surprise for those that want even more.

 

This time we go into Doom, since this is the special date when every Doom enthusiast celebrates the birth of a franchise that generated a complete genre!

 

I greatly welcome all competitors to this new monthly tournament; newcomers and hardcore players alike, thank you all for taking a part in this new endeavour, and I hope you all guys have fun!

THE OBJECTIVE:

 

- The essence here is Endurance. A WAD is selected among the great ocean of content that Doom offers. The competitors then have to play the entirety or as long as they can to accumulate points.

For this, we’ll (I'll) calculate:

 

A.     How long it took the competitor to finish the WAD (the faster, the better).

B.     The skill level chosen.

C.     The category that the player is submitting.

D.     Total progress.

 

- There are 3 categories, just like some other DW leagues, if you need reference:

 

1.        First Run: You haven’t played this WAD nor know anything about the general layout of the levels or anything else. This is your blind run, your first dive into it.

2.      Experienced Run: You have played this WAD in its entirety a long ago or don’t remember much of the details, or have watched someone else play this WAD, to the point that you might have a considerable advantage over blind, first run players.

3.      Prepared Run: You have played, finished, practiced, learnt or even mastered this WAD. You know all the levels or most of it and can run it with expertise, giving you a clear advantage over blind, first run players.

 

- If the selected WAD has, example; 15 maps, you can and should finish all those 15 maps, BUT, you can also decide to leave your run at, let’s say 11 maps, and still be valid for submission in the competition. So, finishing the entire WAD is not needed, but recommended. The player with the most endurance is the one likely to win.

 

- In the end, whoever finishes fastest with the highest skill level and with the most finished maps will accumulate the most points and win.

 

- Along the normal WAD competition, there’s also a special Challenge WAD (or can be a special bonus map/or maps of the same WAD) that will follow the exact basic rules of UV, UV+ and NM! only, no saves, no deaths, continuous. This is a bonus and optional challenge that will score up to 5,000 points to the winner. Losers don’t get the points. This is a high risk, high reward kind of challenge. This is so some players that still crave for more can get an even higher challenge, while at the same time being a second chance to score more points. Winners of this challenge will also get a special mention on our winners’ article in the Doom Master Wadazine.

STANDARD COMPETITION:

• ·         Vanilla-compatible
• ·         -Complevel 3 for PrBoom and/or Doom (Strict) for ZDoom source-ports.
• ·         We endure E1M1 to E3M8. Secret levels are not required and should be omitted.
• ·         Est. first runners time to finish: 2 to 3 hours.
• ·         IWAD: DOOM.WAD

 

THE STANDARD COMPETITION RULES:

1.      Any skill level is valid, this includes NM! in case a mad doomer out there is crazy enough to try it. UV Fast is also allowed! All under your own responsibility.

2.      This should go without saying but, NO CHEATS OR CHECKING THE MAP IN THE EDITOR.

3.      No gameplay mods allowed (Brutal Doom, Final Doomer, Supercharge, etc.)

4.      Visual mods allowed (Fullscreen HUDs, Smooth Doom, Vanilla Essence, etc.)

5.      You can die as much as you like. lol

6.      No pistol starting. Only continuous.

7.      You can save up to 3 total times per map (Especially difficult WADs may have more saves.) When and where is up to you.

8.      You must follow the Competition indications (Which will be published depending on the WAD compatibility, requirements, source-port, etc.)

9.      Freelooks is allowed. But no jumping or crouching.

10.    Secret/bonus levels should be omitted. They do not count towards score and will only drag your time. Sometimes, a Secret Level might be part of the Challenge.

11.    Any source-port is allowed as long as it runs the WAD.

12.    No dynamic lights, sorry. While they look cool, they also reveal hidden/secret items.

 

CHALLENGE COMPETITION:

» Thy Flesh Consumed «

• ·         Vanilla-compatible
• ·         -Complevel 3 for PrBoom and/or Doom (Strict) for ZDoom source-ports.
• ·         We endure E4M1 to E4M8. Secret levels are not required and should be omitted.
• ·         Est. first runners time to finish: 40 minutes to 1 hour.
• ·         IWAD: DOOM.WAD

 

CHALLENGE COMPETITION RULES:

1.      Ultra-Violence, UV Fast or NM! only. This is up to you. Better chances to get a better score with higher skills.

2.      Only victory allowed. You die and you lose, or restart another try all over and endure until winning. Only send your victory submission.

2.      This should go without saying but, again, NO CHEATS.

3.      No gameplay mods allowed.

4.      Visual mods allowed.

5.      No pistol starting. Only continuous.

6.      No saves, no loading.

7.      You must follow the Competition Indications (Which will be published depending on the WAD compatibility, requirements, etc.)

8.      Freelook is allowed. But no jumping or crouching.

9.      Any source-port.

10.    No dynamic lights, again.

 

COMPETITION SUBMISSION REQUIERMENTS:

1.      You can submit your playthrough with: YouTube videos, VODs or demos. If you do make a video, please start from the menu and show your compatibility and lightning options first.

2.      Indicate your Competition Category.

3.      Indicate your total time. Setting a timer with your phone or PC is a good idea to keep track of time in case you die or use save & load system. (the intermission screen is a requirement in your video, demo or VOD, can use a HUD addon to help with that too.) If  the WAD is episodic, indicate total time for each episode.

4.      Indicate your skill level.

5.      Indicate your WAD progress, example: Finished at MAP29, or Finished the entire WAD.

6.      Indicate the source-port you're using.

 

NOTE: This is the same if you participate for the Challenge Competition, but of course, total time and skill level is irrelevant.

 

NOTE 2: If you're a Vanilla, DOS or Chocolate user, please don't skip the text screen at the end to the levels. If you do this it will omit the true intermission screen (the one with your time stats) in source-ports like PrBoom+ and will probably cause us some trouble tracking your total time in saveless runs.

 

NOTE 3: If you decide to not finish a full WAD, your progress will be taken into account only in your last intermission screen. Example: This means that if you play, let’s say MAP20, but just half of it and don’t finish, that progress won’t be taken into account and your score will be based on the intermission screen of MAP19.

May I be omitted from the menu requirement if I use PrBoom+'s ability to make videos from demos? Unfortunately it doesn't have the ability to show menus.

Looks like I'll choose GZDoom + recorder software to play all 3 episodes in one go. If not, 3 demos on Pr/GLBoom+ will do justice.

Category 3, UV, finished all three episodes. Individual times for each episode are 15:55, 16:53, and 18:29. I think that adds up to 51:17.

 

Didn't feel like grinding out a better time or practicing, so these demos are all my first attempts. Maybe I'll try TFC tomorrow.

@EndlessI forgot to mention that some GZDoom console commands like i_timescale (used to slow or accelerate time) and sv_fastweapons and similar CVARs are also considered as cheats.

Of course, that's mostly a requirement for ZDoom-relatives users.

You're welcome to play on any controls-setting you wish, be it keyboard or even controllers! Just follow the posted rules ;)

We all start somewhere ;) The Standard Competition is way more forgiving. But do keep in mind that E4 is part of the Challenge Competition, which is way harder and thus, challenging. Hehe.

Category 2 or 3? ... have played UD probably 5 - 10 times in total before? Not sure but I mostly played Doom 2 when I was younger :p I also have seen the speedruns for UD many times over the years... still got lost at times but overall went ok. For episode 4 I played much more safely and was very close to death multiple times.. I couldn't remember where any armor was :p

I blasted my way through E1-3, as I intensively played them on SNES. For E4, I had some hard time in E4M6. First I hit 4% health before luckily finding the soulsphere, then I got lost for a minute losing some health in the lava pit, and finally I wasn't confident against the cyber. I fortunately killed him at the last second. In the end that was intense but fun.

Crap, of course I forgot something else. That's odd that our times differ. I just played each demo, popped open the advanced HUD and recorded the time it showed there. This time would include intermission screens, so that may be the cause of the extra time.

 

I'll edit my post again with missing info.

Edit - I'll consider it as a prepared run. 

 

 

 

A Prepared Run would meant that you know and remember very well almost the entire WAD, meaning that you would quickly finish it with no major problem. On the other hand, a Experienced Run means that you have, indeed, played the WAD but lack the proper practice, map knowledge or level layout memory to actually do an advanced run. And last, of course, a First Run means is just first blind time getting into it.

 

In your case, A Category 3: Prepared Run, sounds about right!

Nice try man! While you did not finish the rest of the maps, you still followed the rules so you're up for the scoreboard! You could've tried again since saves are valid :P

 

Your run also looks more like a Category 2, since you seem to know the basic layouts of the early maps, but you did get lost on the last maps.

 

Also, don't forget to provide your progress always. Your score is up an ready.

SO. This video was recorded on Tuesday 1st. Couldn't uploaded this because of wifi issues here in the sector.

Anyway. The following times are: 16:16 for Ep.1, 18:45 for Ep.2 and 15:07 for Ep.3, giving me a total of 50:08. Ultraviolence, familiar run because I don't need to prepare such a run.

However, Ep.4 was different. Died on E4M7 with a time of 20:50.

 

Here's the video. Changed all settings before the gameplay as said in the rules. GZDoom 4.5.0 was used in this run.
