Pegleg Posted December 3, 2020 (edited) Welcome to the latest installment of the IronEagle Competition, the ironman competition that welcomes everyone wanting to join the fun. We take the selection and play continuously until death. If you haven't tried it, today can be the day! Streamers and non-streamers are welcome, so feel free to join us. This month, we'll try something a bit different from previous IronEagle selections. Previously, the selection was a single large map or a mapset consisting of several maps. This month, however, participants will challenge themselves against two distinct maps made by the same author. For this month, participants will play Songs of the Damned and Drip Feed, both Cacoward-winning single maps made by Trevor Primmett. These maps are both Boom-compatible; they are not part of a duology. Congratulations to the winners of this month's IronEagle are (further details in this post): UV: @Suitepee (Runner-up: @dt_) HMP: @Capellan (Runner-up: n/a) HNTR: @Andromeda (Runner-up: @Major Arlene) Download Songs of the Damned and Drip Feed here. Songs of the Damned is Map 01. Drip Feed is Map 30. Both wads use either complevel 9 or Boom (strict). You can play the maps in whatever order you want, and you can play the second map even if you don't survive the first. Songs of the Damned has a Dehacked file included in the zip. This modifies some of the timings and is optional; it more closely emulates Doom 64 behavior. We will NOT be using the Dehacked file for Songs of the Damned this month. There is already a Dehacked file included as part of Drip Feed. Spoiler Template for PRBoom+: -iwad doom2.wad -file songs.wad -complevel 9 -skill <x> -warp 01 -record <IEsongs> -iwad doom2.wad -file dripfeed.wad -complevel 9 -skill <x> -warp 01 -record <IEdripfeed> Template for ZDoom: -iwad doom2.wad -file songs.wad +compatmode 6 -skill <x> +map map01 -record <IEsongs> -iwad doom2.wad -file dripfeed.wad +compatmode 6 -skill <x> +map map01 -record <IEdripfeed> it is possible you may have to use +set skill <x> for GZDoom Rules: The rules are basically the same as they have been. Either demos or streams are permissible. If you are creating a demo, post the demo. If you are streaming, post a video of the stream. Even if streaming, you can still submit a demo, if you want to. The basic rule is that you submit a demo/stream played at a particular difficulty level (HNTR, HMP, or UV) and you play without saving and reloading, ending your run when you die (or survive). The following are allowed: Freelook Mods that are COSMETIC ONLY The following are NOT allowed: Crouching Jumping Mods that change ANY aspect of base gameplay, including (but not limited to) enemy behavior, enemy speed, player abilities, player speed, weapon damage, ammo, and enemy drops. Further, more specific rules are listed below: Spoiler Submissions (except for streams, as described below) must include a demo from one of the listed acceptable ports. The first actual attempt must be submitted, there are no do-overs (with very few possible exceptions, which I will address as they arise). You may practice a mapset if you want, but these practice runs should not be submitted as your official entry, and your run would be Category 2, unless there are exceptional circumstances (such as described below). A run must be done in a singular sitting with no saves. (With room for breaks. This will be addressed below.) Streams and video runs are accepted provided you post a video of the stream/run or a link to the video. If you post a video of the stream, you may post a demo if you want, but it is not mandatory. You may also post a demo if you, for some reason, do not want to post the video or a link. Secret levels, if present, do not have to be completed for a survival run. If they are completed, they are extra credit. Any port is accepted provided it will actually run the mapset. There is no preference. Of course, if you want to try a Boom map in Chocolate, be my guest. However, be aware that your run may be over rather quickly. Don't say you weren't warned. Category System: Category 1: Blind run. This explains itself. You have no knowledge of the wad and have not played/seen it before. Category 2: Non-blind. If you have played the wad before and/or possess any foreknowledge, your run is non-blind. Basically, anything that is not Category 1 is Category 2. The exception to this is if, for example, you do something like die in the first or second room or two of Map 01 and then decide to play again for your run. Call that Category 1. If you're unhappy with your blind run, feel free to record a new run, and submit that run instead. If you want to submit your first run, no matter how you perform, by all means, go ahead and do it. You just shouldn't feel that you HAVE to submit a run you're dissatisfied with, just to preserve a "Category 1" status. If you want to go back and submit a second run, you're welcome to do so, but, at this time, it won't be counted. Difficulty System: You may submit a demo/stream for only one of HNTR, HMP, or UV. Choose only one, because s ubsequent submittals will be rejected (i.e., if you submit a HMP demo, the HNTR demo you then submit will be rejected). We're not using the 1CC rule set here. And your first submission is what counts. Only runs from the same difficulty will be pitted against each other. Each difficulty will be graded separately. Submission: When you submit your run, please the include the following information: The category (1 or 2) The difficulty Did you survive (one or both maps)? Time for survival (one or both maps) Kills in each map that you didn't survive The port you used (if you included a demo) A link to the stream/video (if you did a stream or recorded a video) You may include a commentary about the maps or details about them, if you want to. If you do include specific information about the map (e.g. "The demon trap in Map 08 is rough"), please put it in a spoiler, so that people that want a completely blind experience won't be tipped off. In you're just putting in a general comment (e.g., "Pro tip: don't get hit"), then no need for a spoiler. Attempting to max the maps is not necessary to win. Feel free to attempt a pacifist run, but clearly state that when you post your submission, because I'll have to take that into account with the ranking. Ranking for this mapset will be determined by: Survival in both maps Total time Survival in one map Time for survival plus kills in the other map Total kills if you didn't survive either map Total time if you didn't survive either map If you die, please wait a few seconds before quitting. Breaks: Everyone gets tired. Sometimes people survive longer than they expected. Nature calls. Every now and then, there are family emergencies. Needing to take a break shouldn't necessarily end a promising run. While you should try to complete the run in a single setting, this isn't always possible. If you have to take a break, try to make it quick. Happy Dooming! Pseudonaut Posted December 3, 2020 Songs of the Damned: Category 1, UV, PrBoom+, died with 72/279 kills. Spoiler It seemed that an incorrect answer to a "puzzle" rendered progression impossible, so I suicided. It turns out that I still could have grabbed the yellow key, so this is especially disappointing. Oh well. Drip Feed: Category 1, UV, PrBoom+, died with 35/413 kills. dripsongsIE-pseudonaut.zip 2 Share this post Link to post
Aquila Chrysaetos Posted December 3, 2020 ie26-aq.7z Songs: Clocked out at 10:37, softlocked as best as I can tell. Drip Feed: Died to a shotgunner, didn't check the time. Category 1, UV, PRBoom+ 2515 2 Share this post Link to post
Andromeda Posted December 3, 2020 13 hours ago, Pegleg said: Tyrant (Winners -- UV: Bdubzzz HMP: Horus HNTR: Major Arlene ) I won in that month in HNTR I think :P Both demos recorded on dsda-doom 0.8.1 -complevel 9, category 1, HNTR. Survived both wads, total time 1:28:25. Songs of the Damned, completed in 53:26 - Easy level, though I was very lucky to avoid a DNF/dying respectively at two different points before even completing the first third of the level. Drip Feed, completed in 34:59 - Even easier despite having over 100 monsters more, don't remember going below 50% health in this one. ie26_andromeda.zip 2 Share this post Link to post

Suitepee Posted December 5, 2020 https://www.twitch.tv/videos/827076859 Playthrough starts at around the 2:24:00 mark. Category 1 run on UV. Survived Songs of the Damned in 50:13. Survived Drip Feed in 49:00. Two fun maps to play overall; even if I did get lost a few times on Drip Feed, I somehow managed to keep stumbling into the path to progression. 2 Share this post Link to post
SleepyVelvet Posted December 13, 2020 (edited) I did my Songs run today... Just before I was able to kill the (presumably) final cyberdemon, it hit me with a I_SignalHandler: Exiting on signal: signal 11 . This was at the 55-ish minute mark. Oh well, better luck next time. I also played with the -deh patch included with song.wad, which is think slowed down the plasma rifle rate. I'm not sure if we were supposed to do that. Pretty cool, chill, castle-y map. Blind, UV, prboom-plus noisy_songs.zip I'll have to do the next map on a different date. Edited December 25, 2020 by NoisyVelvet 1 Share this post Link to post
Capellan Posted December 18, 2020 Songs of the Damned. HMP, blind, dead in about 15 minutes. Didn't bother to count monsters. Spoiler Cheap trap is cheap. Drip Feed. Also HMP, Blind, dead in about 10 minutes. Again, did not count monsters. Spoiler This death was fair enough. 2 Share this post Link to post
Pegleg Posted December 19, 2020 Songs of the Damned Category: 2 Difficulty: HNTR Kills: 153/192 Time: 36:52 Recorded with PrBoom+ v. 2.5.1.4 I thought I had a decent shot at a survival. I had a good plan. My rocket and an imp got in the way of that plan. Oh well. Drip Feed Category: 2 Difficulty: HNTR Kills: 66/317 Time: 9:20 Recorded with PrBoom+ v. 2.5.1.4 Protip: Never bring a chainsaw to a chain gun fight. You would have thought I learned that lesson back on Interstellar Sickness (CC4: Map 20). Apparently not. ie_pegleg_sotdanddf.zip No survivals Total Kills: 219/509 = 43% 3 Share this post Link to post
Pegleg Posted December 20, 2020 (edited) @MxCraven Over in the DWIL thread, you wrote "Well, that didn't go well at all... But, it's a start, and I am definitely not cut out for any sort of Ultra Violence playthroughs (even of maps I know well)." It seemed inappropriate for me to shill for another ironman competition there, so I'm bringing that shameless self-promotion over here. As a new ironman runner, I wanted to introduce you to the IronEagle Competition, in case you hadn't seen it. The competition is an ironman, and is similar to DWIL, but there is one BIG difference: you can choose whether you want to play on HNTR, HMP, or UV. So there's something for everyone. If you don't enjoy playing on UV, then drop to one of the lower difficulty levels and play here. @head_cannon Welcome to the wonderful world of ironman running. I also invite you to join the fun here in the IronEagle. @kalaeth I hope to see you here this month, too. We missed you last month. Edited December 20, 2020 by Pegleg 2 Share this post Link to post

I totally forgot last month.. lets see what I can do this month. Som HNTR, never played any of the maps. Songs : 139 kills at 25 minutes and then cat decided to climb unto me and I got killed... command line: gzdoom.exe -iwad Doom2.wad -file songs.zip -compatmode 6 -skill 2 -amp map01 -record KAL_songs.lmp KAL_songs.zip Drip : 38 kills, 2 minutes... Either the difficulty didn't set or some people don't really know what "easy" means... *checks* yup. Difficulty wasn't set. I played again over the demo, so it's even worse than the first , 39 kills, 1 minute something. command line : gzdoom.exe -iwad Doom2.wad -file dripfeed.zip +compatmode 6 +set skill 2 +map map30 -record KAL_drip.lmp spoilers: Spoiler I don't find this neither fun nor entertaining, cacos, revenants and mancubus all with only a single shotgun and no space to doge? fuck that. (played it again in ITYTD and only got to 5 minutes and 64 monsters... Yeah, sorry, not for me) I'll upload the demo after. head_cannon Posted December 23, 2020 @PeglegInvitation accepted. I had to dig through the options menu to figure out how to turn the stats counter on (ew), but I do have an entry into this month's competition. IE26_hc.zip Category 1, UV, PrBoom+ Songs of the Damned: Dead with 72 Kills Spoiler What a confusing map. The first path dead-ended as the blue key floated away to some future room, and I was stumped for a while. After double-checking everything I'd seen so far, it was revealed to me that one of the windows was actually a door. The outdoor section suddenly became flooded with lava, and I'd already used up the map's health supplies. Even if the yellow key pillar turned out to be an elevator, I wouldn't have enough HP to make it back. I took one additional loop back around the level, seeing if there was anything I'd missed or if that Megasphere was accessible, but having exhausted all other options, I waded out into the lava to die. Drip Feed: Dead with 222 Kills Spoiler I had a much better time with this level. The initial "storming the castle" action sequence was great fun as I had to keep diving deeper into enemy territory to get some space and grab more resources. Once things had settled down, I found each of the dungeon crawls required to unlock the next section to be quite enjoyable too, in their more low-key way. Shortly after the Blue Door, I discovered why this level was in the Map30 slot. I know that the Berserk Pack was blatantly placed in the middle of a magic circle as a warning, but it's still a hell of an anticlimax to be punished by being telefragged. 4 Share this post Link to post

Major Arlene Posted December 27, 2020 here we go! Cat 2 on both I will say for safety reasons. I have a playthrough on my YT of Drip Feed (ironically that was posted exactly 4 years ago yesterday). Songs of the Damned is on the top 100 memorable maps list here and I did a livestream of all of those maps 2 years ago. I don't remember almost any details of the maps but alas, the proof is in the proverbial pudding. Difficulty: HNTR Songs of the Damned: YK puzzle got me twice. attempt I'm submitting starts at 11:58, ends 16:26 for a total of 4:38. 38/205 kills. Drip Feed: Completed. 18:44-59:49 (41:05 total). 96% kills. Source Port: GZDoom 4.4.2 3 Share this post Link to post

Rotwang Posted January 3, 2021 Now that the scores have been tallied (and congrats to the winners!) I can post this. I had recorded a first playthrough and then a prepared attempt but neither would have won (I died on Drip Feed about 10 minutes in both times) so I didn't post them. However, after my prepared attempt I went back and found a glide at the start of Drip Feed that affords one to skip a good portion of the map. The route is fairly viable on HNTR, but on UV I think one would have to be rather adept at navigating hallways crowded with pinkies and HKs and barons. I managed to get an exit after a few attempts on HNTR when I quit trying to speedrun the map and took the time to clear out low tier monsters. I thought this might be worth sharing. dripfeedsk2-553.zip 2 Share this post Link to post
