Who is Carlos Guariglia and what is Doomwiki's issue with him?

I was going through some Doomwiki logs (I find them highly entertaining, don't ask me to explain further) and I found out the site has an automated abuse filter against a very specific kind of spam - inserting short strings of gibberish into random articles. That's not really all that interesting on its own, but apparently this kind of spam is referred to as "Carlosing" or "Carlos-like editing" and was named after Carlos Guariglia, who was supposedly doing these kinds of edits consistently for several years.
I have to ask, what is the story behind that? Why would an author of an obscure source port for DOS do this kind of weird innocuous trolling so consistently for so long?

Dunno what his deal is. Something about getting bad reviews on Doomworld's idgame database frontend and then lashing out in response, I believe? I'm not sure though. IMO he needs therapy.

Story time!

First, from the Wiki:

CDoom is also a very small port and its still worked on to this day. I've tested the 2.07 version and its honestly kind of impressive what is pulled off there. But, like Fusion, there is practically no content from it, other than from the author itself. A video made by him showing destructable geometry and instantly moving floors is in this post by AxDoomer.

 

Now, as for the Controversy:

• The author has had (in the past, atleast) a tendency to make dupe accounts, post real gore, insult the staff with every grain of sand known to live on Earth, with the context being that one of the /idgames uploads got rejected. This was what, 2001-2004 or something. Post from Essel referencing this.
• In the rejection he cursed the late Ty Halderman. Now if you knew anything about Ty, one of the legendary maintainers, everything would fly. Except those things that wouldn't. This, obviously, did not.
• AxDoomer asked a similar question in 2015. In it you will also find an archive.org dump and some more explanations.
• Ironically, he credits Christ for his works (whilst insulting the staff with every Doom monster under the sun)
• Aside that, whenever there was a way to anonymously spam a Doomworld related resource, chances were that the author would be behind it. It caused an /idgames policy change as a result.
• In the Doom source code, he censored message_dontfuckwithme into message_dontdamnme. (Courtesy of Da Werecat)

See the above. Its a mixture of rejection, spite, and perhaps also a bit of mental lapses (to put it mildly).

TLDR: Impressive features for ports but content only through author and extremely insultive/delirious through his means.

I guess I didn't really expect this to be anything beyond some trolling from an obsessed weirdo, but I'll be damned, that's an impressive portfolio. And at least in one thing I can't help but sympathise with him, idgames is an absolute pain for first-time uploaders, and it's not necessarily because of the FTP.
Honestly I kinda wish all of his stuff wasn't erased though, I'd love to read through some of that insanity.

How is uploading to the FTP hard? Agreed, it takes some getting used to, but its not a pain. It just takes good reading.

It isn't really erased, well the insults are, but the references aren't. But i don't want to link much more though - I appreciate the author for his achievements in ports, not the things he did thereafter.

Yes, that would be CDoom 2.05. Its a crude hack more than anything else, but the instant moving sectors and thus destructible geometry remains a novel feature.

There is source code aswell, so there is nobody stopping from looking at that and, say, write an equivalent for Boom, ZDoomDOS, or PrBoom.

This isn't the only idgames policy change Carlos has caused. He's the reason why e-mail addresses are censored in textfiles now. He used to register to dw and spam gore threads for years, but that tactic got less and less efficient, so eventually he started scraping e-mail addresses from /incoming wads and registering them for either Jesus bullshittery newsletters, or gay porn websites, depending on his current mood swing.

 

For a devout catholic, he sure knew a lot of gay porn websites.

I mean, yeah, but i was not going to list every single thing he had done - Giving too much clout to an author's worse side than what really is necessary.

Having said that, his works deserve some recognition. That's where every form of appreciation ends though.
