Dragonfly's map reminds me of the early levels in Heretic 2 that take place in Silverspring. :D

based on the lighting tendencies in this map I think I'll submit it to Alien Vendetta 20 years late lol

"shadows over innsmouth" for quake looks much like this. one of a map set i played long ago, but apparently it left a lasting impression.

Downloaded Doomkid's Big Vanilla WAD Pack and played a couple of '94 maps that I've been curious about for a while.

 

UAC_DEAD.WAD (Doomsday of UAC):

Great detailing for when it came out. In comparison to modern maps though, it really hasn't aged well.

 

TRINITY.WAD (The Unholy Trinity):

I am really curious as to how this was done. At first I thought it was an animated custom texture, but since it changes between Doom and Freedoom, I'm not so sure...

If I recall correctly, Unholy Trinity comes packaged with a huge text file that explains in detail all the tricks and behind-the-scenes technical trivia.

Nice! Will have to check this out if I run out of ideas.

 

For now, my own work in Valheim serves as inspiration, heh.

they're using sprites as texture patches. also, it is ok for patch to be partially beyond texture bounds, so there are several textures with different patch offsets -- that's how the animation was done.

 

so this is animated custom texture, yes. just composited using some sprites as texture parts. ;-)
