The Ancient Gods 2 - Trailers, Leaks, and New Info

Recommended Posts

What bothers me the most about the trailer, though, is that it builds up to this big epic and climactic confrontation with a character that has been previously absent from the games and does not seem to have had much of a hand in the events so far. Like, why is it suddenly such a big deal that the entire known universe has to take him down again? Heck, why did the Doom Slayer even bring him back to life if he was already defeated and contained?

I thought the point was to incarnate Davoth into a form in which he could be killed?

Yeah, that's the plan, as if he was in their life spehere, he still can hold power in hell.

Oh no, the dark lord has a shield I hope it works similar to the chaingun shield because if he is nothing but bullet-spongier marauder I will be pissed and disappointed.

But he was still contained, no? Like Diablo in his Soulstone?

If so, then this feels to me as basically the same premise as Diablo III (i.e. bringing Diablo back to kill him for good), only without having had two previous titles to establish how formidable of a threat Diablo is and how you cannot simply contain him. Or Chrono Trigger's Lavos if the game had not gradually build him up as the main antagonist. I mean, correct me if I am wrong here, but Davoth seems to pretty much come out of nowhere.

There doesn't seem to be any mentions about the true god of the Doom Universe The Father anywhere in the trailers of the 2nd DLC. Guess tomorrow it is then.

Davoth is the name of the Dark Lord (which is a title rather than a name), whom I believe has been mentioned before? He's pretty much a sci-fi Satan. It's not as if Hell having a Satan is totally unexpected.

What I don't quite get is why he looks like an evil version of the Slayer.

I guess that serves me right for not having completed the final mission of the DLC yet. I'm actually posting this while taking a break from practising. Doom Eternal is one of the most intense games I've ever played.

I would say it is, given how many times we have been visiting Hell before.

Also, it begs the question as to why the Doom Slayer just did not break the Dark Lord Sphere like he did with the Seraphim's.

@Rudolph It's more lore based that threat, but it's since Eternal. We don't see the threat there because there was other objectives.

-Eternal, The Slayer Objectives was liberate Earth of the Demonic Invasion, killing the ones that invaded earth, the hell priests and the Khan Mayker.

-The Ancient Gods Part 1: The Slayer Objetive it's locate the Seraphin and eliminate the demonic invasion that's still holds now in the Maykers Lands (That's was fault of the Slayer, and how Hell Quickly Attack lands where are not preparated to defend theyself of Hell. If the Slayer wanted, he better was ussing the Father and Seraphin to resurrect the body of the Father and fix the the Maykers lands, instead, he ressurected the Dark Lord, because killing him it's the only way to stop the power of Hell.

And yeah, mostly DoomSlayer always contain the Hell Forces, but never destroy them, neither in Doom 64 or all his time in Argent D'Nur with the Sentinels, because all that mean nothings if the Dark Lord it's still alive.

Well, okay. That is fair, I suppose.

I wish Doom's lore had not been made so goddamn convoluted. Maykers, Night Sentinels, Urdak, Argent D'Nur, Betrayer, Seraphim, Dark Lord, Father... I still struggle to keep track of all the names and concepts that have been introduced - oftentimes only through the Codex - in the new games.

Thankfully story doesn't matter and you can completely ignore it, doom is about gameplay and the gameplay is awesome.

Which is why they dedicated almost an entire map to codex entries.

Wait...

I do not like this excuse. The game really wants you to pay attention to the story and will always find a way to remind you that it is there; it is simply not enough to give the player the option to skip cutscenes, especially not at this point. Plus clearly Id Software has put a lot of time and efforts in crafting the lore and story, and even if I do not like it, I kind of feel bad for the team who ends up seeing their hard work devalued in such manner.

You seem like a person who is trying to start a fight by making uncalled-for personal attacks. No thanks.

I feel like if anyone wanted to take Doom's setting seriously, they'd only notice how different new Doom is from classic Doom and even think nobody took it more seriously than modders/mappers/producers of Realm667 assets that tried to "fit Doom".

It's the kind of series where so much that could/would/should have happened did happen in fanmade stuff, one way or another.

And the reboot is both a reimagination with its own ideas and references to the series or at least some popular memes and elements from the pop culture zeitgeist.

I feel like Doom's versatility, experimentation potential and staying power came from its setting being empty or abstract: "Doom isn't just a painting, it's a brush and canvas" and i feel like a potential problem with giving a "Universe" is writing rules that weren't there and could prevent some potential ideas to happen in the first place.

It's why i think if a new game was another reboot (even as an side/spin off thing), it wouldn't be any different from Doom 3, Final Doom or the mobile games.

Specially if there's ideas from the new games that could be executed differently, whether it's a different design for a demon, ways to use some gameplay mechanics or just a different version of Samuel Hayden for people that didn't like the Seraphim twist, i guess.

I feel like the new games just don't want to admit they're technically a heavy reinterpretation, even if still amazing, while Doom 3 at least admitted being its own thing, even if it had problems.

Not even the classic UAC logo is used.

It's because the Dark Lord is supposed to be a "Behind the scenes" kinda deal, even though he still feels recent.

As opposed to the SMM, Cybie and IOS, which are more classic and Doom's equivalent of Bowser, Eggman, Wily etc.

The fact that his face isn't quite the "Doomguy's face in HD" probably adds it too.

The "Doom universe" is also focused on its own thing, even if it didn't have to be this Metal Gear Solid 4 type of story conclusion, with recurring character and flashbacks and nods to previous games. (something that could make more sense in some side game that tried to pull up a MetaDooM)

Might as well mention my opinions on the trailer:

* DL says something about bringing violence and lord, which sounds a bit out of place for literal Satan. (didn't some interview revealed Immora has its own civilization too?)
* That one 2016 MP armor is being used for these guards.
* They're using the Reaper, which reminds me of that Unmaker zombie from Realm667 and makes on pair with traditional "human" enemies in Doom.
* Arachnotron attached to the ceiling of some rock. wonder if their placement will focus on that, since it's rare ingame.
* World spear, with an energy axe and some surviving men.
* Dragon. when Doomguy lands, i think it's snowing.
* Meathook platforming on Earth.
* "See other worlds" UAC poster.
* Hellbraker's the name of the hammer.
* Armored Baron has green flash on the same "fist" that is also weak point to deactivate armor.
* More swimming on Earth.
* Stone imps.
* Water bridge.
* Seems to be a UAC base but with ancient stone rings, possibly for a gateway.
* A magic crystal.
* Sentinel army also has catapults.
* Valen's hammer is blue and not purple here.
* Titan is punched by Sentinel mech.
* Poison Prowler is just green.
* Blood Maykr returns and i thought that tiny blue tech pillar was that one Mars Core hazard.
* Is the dragon burning the Imp going to be a "friendly hazard"?
* Seems to be a Sentinel ship falling in Immora.
* Doomguy and Seraphs.
* Immora has Maykr aesthetic and see get to see a sneak peak of the hammer.
* DL has sword and shield.

Somebody mentioned in the Comments on Youtube that this is the Doom Guy from the first two Games, wanting Vengeance for Daisy.

My Tip was that it is the Doom Guy from Doom 3 :P

Okay, that would be funny. It is also on par with my idea of having Mecha-Hitler show up in his stead.

Isn't it Hellbreaker, not Hellbraker? As in Breaking Hell apart?

Mecha-Satan sounds way more fun and creative than just an evil Doomguy in a Space Marine armor.

Even more so after he worked on Doom 3, easily the most story-driven Doom game until Doom 2016.

We haven't seen the full fight yet! Once that stupid armour is inevitably destroyed, I'm sure it won't just be game over.

So here's a question; are we sure the Dark Lord is really Satan at all? Didn't Doom 2016 state that there have been multiple Dark Lords over the ages?

Good Question.

A Lord could be just a Commander/General.

The Super Shotgun's Codex entry describes the weapon as "Lucifer's Bane", so it seems that Satan is a separate entity from Davoth. In the DLC 1 cutscene on the ARC Carrier, the ARC intern refers to The Dark Lord as "the devil" but that's likely just an unofficial moniker.
