How do you collect an item behind a fence without opening the fence?

I know about glides. Is the same method used in the video below? Or do you just stand close to the item for a second until the item is picked up?

When you run into a solid object, the game will try to place your hitbox inside of it for a brief time before pushing you back out, which lets you touch items through walls if they're placed close enough.

Thanks. Is there any special movement you need to do to get it to work and do you need to stand next to the item for over 1 second or is it instant?

It is instant as soon as the player touches the bounding box.

 

 

Why don't you fire up an editor and test it with various distances?

Running diagonally/SR40ing towards it greatly increases the chance of collecting it.

It’s a little different to glides but similar :-)

 

You Just need to SR40 of SR50 straight into the wall in front of the item (trying to hit with the corner of your hitbox).

 

If done right, Doomguy’s hitbox will partially clip through the wall for a frame or two allowing you to pick up the item :-D
