what's the nastiest single fight you've been through in a map

I have that WAD up in my play list....

As well you should. The rest of it is an incredible good time, some of the best map layout and combat work you’ll ever see in a series of challenging but easily digestible maps that don’t demand insane amounts of time. I revisit Scythe all the time and there’s a good reason why. MAP30 isn’t even bad as such, it’s just that it’s pure insanity and compared to the rest of the WAD is not very approachable.

I just got off from BTSX E1. Had a good time with that WAD. So going from fairly balanced to straight up slaughter fest would be a decent idea. I'll play it today. :D

there's really only two slaughtermaps in scythe: map26 and map30. most of the wad is very fair

Scythe 30 = Revenant heaven, plenty of Arch Viles too. Everything is nasty about that map. But it is MAP30 so it should be super difficult.

A fight in Sunder map19:

Also pretty much every fight in Dimensions map02

Note to self: never play  this WAD. Ever.

Pretty tame compared to the modern stuff, but that part at the end of Plutonia's MAP09 with the circular area and the TONS of revenants, mancubi and chaingunners still makes me sweat to this day.

Alien Vendetta MAP04 "Seclusion" or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Chaingun Ambush.

This map might not seem that nasty to most people and I would agree and say it's a fair map. I played this map for the first time at last month's DWIronman (twitch playthrough for DWIronman, MAP04 starts at 18:10) with the goal of not dying for as many maps as possible on UV. Imagine not being a Doom god, ending MAP03's ammo starvation fest with having to punch out a Hell Knight without berserk because there is literally not a scrounge of ammunition left on the map, and then MAP04 starts. Dear Lord! An unstoppable onslaught of doors and walls opening with groups of monsters behind them.

People that know the map well and have a look at 22:00 in my playthrough will start grinning because they know what's up: I'm about to back into several monster closets and get my behind kicked by Chaingunners. This hallway is the moment something *clicked* in my Doom experience: I discovered I reallllllllly love these kinds of traps. Mean or nasty fights like this: bring 'em! I love it!

Kinda afraid about some posts here, im currently playing Scythe 2, at map25. As someone mentioned map 23 "Whispering Winds" was hard,

I hope not to choke on the next ones, yikes!

Scythe 2 maps 26 & 27 gave me the most grief in that wad, but then again I was playing continuous.

Probably my first draft of the opening revenant gangbang in PRCP MAP14. It was technically beatable, but somehow worse than the current iteration... That a lot of people struggle with still to this day. I had a similar problem with DBP05 MAP01, when those imps on the sides in the Cyberdemon church were Revenants. I’m pretty big on testing for this reason! Some of those ideas are... well, horrendous, when you play the implementation for the first time.

As for stuff that isn’t mine and WIP... I try to avoid map sets that I know will be bullshit hard, but I’ve played a few. Hardest fight that I know I’ve beaten fairly, after many attempts and a great deal of saving and loading? Probably a late fight in Bastion of Chaos on my HNTR test run. I seem to remember snagging an invulnerability and being launched into the exit.

I just die to all notable encounters ever, all my dooming achievements are in a marathon sense - I played through NEIS episode 2 on one life, etc

I've made progress on being able to beat the tougher maps in Zones of Fear, ALT and Epic 2 cos I love those sets while not being good at relentless gameplay.

I try harder on Ribbiks' stuff - I beat Mud Bunny from Stardate 20x6 on UV without saving, I really adore that map so I put time into it; it has some nasty fights! but that's just an intermediate map and most of the others crush me :))))))))))) I dallied on Nefertiti and FCFF cos some of my music got in those and I feel comfortable, before dying. SWTW and 20x7 are so totally beyond me and its a shame because I vibe with Eastern Sun more than almost any other map ever made. I like marathoning Sunlust on ITYTD lol

This may not be the absolute most cruel burst of viciousness I've ever had in a Doom map, but for some reason, I'm thinking of that one segment in the yellow sector from Anagnorisis of Eviternity. Ten Arch-Viles pile upon you without giving you a good way of escaping, so you have to flee into this enclosure where they can't reach you but they can blast you through the windows. You need to very meticulously sap at them bit by bit, with no real easy way out than to make sure they're all dead before you exit. I actually mostly felt like Anagnorisis was manageable (though I did save liberally), but this was the one bit that gave me the most trouble above all else.

Also, does Dark Dome from Alien Vendetta count as one gigantic fight? Because AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Mock 2.

The Cyberdemon room. Those familiar know the one. I tried to play cheatless and that's where my run ended.

Apart from Map30 it's deserved it's reputation.  i loved it, at least.  Played it after Gameplay and Talk did a blind walkthrough of it, and even for him Map30 was a mess on the first run.

Several cheap attacks which can double as an earrape and just generally unfun gameplay.

I remember of a very nasty cyberdemon ambush in Elysion.wad. You have just enough space to dodge his rockets and you must rely on the infights with the barons to survive. Just look the video at 9:16.

The murder squad (read: giant cloud lf Cacos) at the end of one of the latest Sunder levels probably takes the cake for me.

200 Mega Hurts in Going Down. It's not too hard once you know where all of the invulnerability spheres are but all of those Archives and Pain Elementals wreck my nerves every time...

But still not as nasty as fighting a Cyberdemon close range in a pit with a rocket launcher, I can't remember the WAD but I do remember it was the first time I had to 'get good' as the youth say.
