doom 64 opinions

Recommended Posts

I've played some of it recently, and it's alright. Really easy (with some exceptions), like I was playing some slightly improved IWAD maps, with a slightly different ruleset that threw me off because I'm so used to Doom 2 mechanics.

I think its good, surprisingly easy for the most part but it really excels at creating a tense, oppressive atmosphere. I bought the steam re-release but had to stop playing it cause the weapon sway was giving me motion sickness (I know its meant to be an intense experience but lets not go nuts) so I reverted to playing one of the ZDoom based versions with better weapon animations.

A Doom 64 II would indeed be nice, it's my favorite classic Doom game, same for PSX Doom.

That's because of the better controls you have with the rerelease. On the N64 it was harder because of the controls.

I love DOOM 64. The environments and atmosphere are really cool, and the enemy designs and new weapons are somewhat refreshing. A solid game!

While I never played the original N64 version, I did play the TC Doom 64 EX and tjhe mod Brutal Doom 64 (this was before D64 was officially ported to PC). I really enjoyed it, the level design, the atmosphere and everything about this game is really good. IMO it's underrated compared to the other Doom games, it's a great game that deserves more attention (unless it already has gotten it, I'm not updated with the news or anything).

I think it's good, lovely colored lighting and the soundtrack adds to the horror atmosphere, I like some of the level design tricks they used in the last few levels. I don't think I'll ever be able to replay it though, I always give up after reaching the 4th map every time I try to replay it. It doesn't feel as replayable as the other titles for me, not enough monsters to shoot.

I would confidently say it's the REAL Doom 3, but that's more of an over-exaggeration. Doom 64 is a damn fine game, probably one of my favourites in the series. I never had an N64, so the only way I had to play the game as a kid was the Absolution TC, and even that was set up so poorly it played the original Doom II soundtrack instead.

Recently, I bought and finished the campaign in the Nightdive remaster. It was an absolute blast to revisit the game after all those years, and would definitely go ahead and replay it. The level design was really good, especially with its unique scripting system for traps(still mad about Hectic), Midway nailed the new monster designs, the dark atmosphere with Aubrey Hodges' tunes + the Run n' Gun action of the original really makes it feel like a blend of Doom's horror aesthetic and fast-paced action done right.

9/10. Go play it.

Hm Controls are pretty good imo.

C- Buttons act like WSAD, Z to shoot, Stick to look, A and B to change Weapons.

But yes, Mouse and Keyboard are much better even compared to newer Controllers.

Played it on PC and Switch (and N64).

What it definitvly makes harder is that you can't save midgame.

So when you walk into a Trap your Life is gone, you have to survive until the End or start from the beginning.

I like the Game nowadays much more on the Rerelease.

It's the game that got me into Doom and IMO the best one ever made.

Just to mention it.

Interestingly Doom was pretty Colourful and had a really cool Soundtrack.

Doom 2 got more darker (or brownish :P) and Doom 64 went on the Routes of the Playstation Version and was a much darker Iteration of Doom.

Like the Series went a Evolution into Doom 3.

Than Doom 2016 was like Doom 3 Tone but Gameplay on Steroids.

Doom Eternal than went another Step into Doom but also into Quake.

Like it is a natural Evolution of the Series to be something dark, colourful, cool, spooky and bunny hopping at one Time.

Love it for many reasons.  Many of these reasons also apply to PSX Doom where applicable.

-Some of the best hell levels in a commercial release, the texturing and the colored lighting is great to look at.

-Excellent horror interpretation of Doom with a wonderful ambient soundtrack that inspires dread and sound design that makes the demons feel ethereal and terrifying.

-The scripting adds more dynamic elements to the levels and I like shifting layouts and surprises.

-The tweaks in the weapon balance are nice, the pistol can actually be used a bit more to snipe weaker enemies and conserve ammo as the shorter recoil time lets you tap fire more quickly.  The chaingun is also very nice in this regard.  Admittedly the BFG does feel a bit weaker but honestly still feels powerful enough for what it is it just takes some getting used to.

There are some really good maps and some really tedious maps. I love the moody horror atmosphere they went for, works great as an alternative to the macho death metal stuff from the DOS games.

Chainsaw buffs are amazing. Nightmare Imps are great upper low tier enemies, the Unmaker is a fantastic reward for secret hunting, Mother Demon is a decent boss monster.

The game really should've had Revenants in it. You can tell they wanted to include them, their homing missiles are in the game. Without Revenants and Chaingunners, theres too many Imp-like enemies and it kinda hurts gameplay diversity. I also don't like how Zombiemen and Shotgun Guys are basically identical. You NEED to be able to tell them apart, Shotgun Guys can shred you.

Level design wise, it's my favorite of the classic doom games. I love its creative use of puzzles, and the layouts are much more navigable than the first two games.

I'm not quite as much of a fan of its darker personality, and I also prefer to play the "absolution" version because the stiff animations in the base game suck.

If I got a version of Doom 64 for Doom 2 that allowed itself to use ZDoom scripting to perfectly mimic the original levels, rather than using the bizarre work-arounds... that would be an all time favorite of mine.

I'd played it a bit on gzdoom and didn't like it but this week I realized it might have been mostly because it was gzdoom. So I'm eager to give it another chance once it's on sale on Steam again.

Now that Doom 64 has been officially re-released, I wonder if Kaiser has considered it. Aubrey Hodges is still around and active; seeing how he re-released the soundtrack with bonus new tracks, I think it is fair to assume he would be available.

It's probably my favorite doom game? Maybe? It's for sure my least played one though.

It's way more consistent in quality then any of the other IWADS excluding probably plutonia, and it has fantastic atmosphere. I like the different aesthetic, but I still think I prefer Doom's kind of cartoony look.
