AtimZarr1 Posted March 15, 2021 (edited) The Doom Eternal lorebook was part of the game's Collector's Edition. However, its unique story content isn't covered anywhere as far as I can tell - likely because of its limited availability and being out-of-stock on the Bethesda store. It's made of 31 pages, with the first 12 pages going over previously established lore (the Slayer Testaments, Eternal's Super Shotgun Codex entry, the conquering of Argent D'Nur (2016), and the Titan's Realm (2016)). The remaining pages go over "new lore" that isn't covered in either 2016 or Eternal. I included images, a text version for the new lore, and an analysis of the new lore terms and events, with a bit of extra trivia about some things at the end. Since TAG2 is upon us fairly soon, I figured better to post about it now than never. Hopefully you find it interesting to read through. --- Images (old lore): Spoiler Images (new lore): Spoiler Text format (new lore only): Quote Image: Argent Tower / Olivia Pierce Pay no tribute to the mind of the infidel. How facile it is, how simple to turn it upon itself. It mulls in vanity, lingers in greed and longs for fraudulent sovereignty. Yet among their fetid order, they rise through these traits, believing themselves suited and potent. They seek dominion over all, and see not the limit of their feeble existence worshipping the Burning Light. Only through the shadow of the Dark Lords are they enlightened. They impudently drink from the poisoned chalice, for their weak minds cannot fathom our plot. And as the pain takes its irrevocable hold, their cries for mercy are mocked by the true masters. --- Image: Samuel Hayden His breath smells not of man. He knows our kind and we of him; though the cause be lost. Yet still, the treacherous nature of the Lucent Defiler is beyond measure. Even as his realm is consumed by the forces of Hell, his arrogant gait dares walk upon our hallowed ground, dressed in vanity iron and idolizing his own abhorrent form. But the eye of judgement sees all, and his rancorous ways are known. Payment for his foul deeds will be swift, for the Defiler pays service to the Unchained Predator. In his betrayal, we shall smelt his pig iron in the fire to forge blade and armor from his carcass, so that he may mark our retribution as tools of our campaign. --- Image: Super Gore Nest Glory of the Night, did we not set the human world ablaze on the Day of Atonement? Their weak emblems of power were broken and turned to rubble as they wailed. In their darkest hour, we spewed Thaxor, the Great Nest, the Carriage of Carnage, spawned deep in the heart of their sacred grounds. And from it we poured, and we poured, our number uncounted, swarming upon the vile sputum as vultures flock the cadaver. Though the Lucent Defiler led their pitiful masses against us, they were no match for our valor. As the walls fell, he fled the battlefield to canker in his lair, and we feasted on the corpses of his bastard children. --- Image: Mars Fear not the way of the light-dwellers. Their invention is foolish. In their pride, they expose the flesh. In their avarice, their welcome the Long Night. Their means are paltry, their will; feeble. What machines of war do they set against us? None that will not be crushed under the foot of the Titans, or ravaged at the inclination of the Dark One. Let them indulge in their mechanical conceit, for when we lay siege to their ivory tower, they shall know the truth. The unyielding fury of hate will turn their shining pillars to dust. Patience in shadow fashions victory. Our night will come, and their skin shall blister in our glory. --- Image: The Gift of Argent (King Novik, Khan Maykr, Deag Ranak, Maykrs, Night Sentinels) For in purity, there lurks corruption. In the virtuous, the snake of deceit whips a forked tongue. Let them praise their false gods, and croon under their anemic overlords. When the day of reckoning comes, we shall take their idols and turn them to our fettle. Even as the kin of the Abhorrent One worship their divinity, we wait, seething, devising our infernal intrigue. Then, they shall know the true meaning of godly power. They shall see that the false gods of the light-dwellers are but parasites on the tail of the Dark One. --- Image: Unwilling / Hell Zombies We drain their blood, and burn the souls of the infidels in the fountain of Eternal Damnation. By their misery we are renewed, our hand invigorated, our armies bolstered. Under the all-seeing Eye the sullied wretches serve us, carcass and conscience, until their penance in the chains of servitude has been paid. For no matter their vile forms in the Realm of Burning Light; in the Domain of Endless Shadow; they are magnificent. All will serve. All become legion. --- Image: Pinkies The snorting beast of the Umbral Plains, the Nameless, scent the blood as no other. Regard the dragging of the cloven hoof, for it is war-sign, and marks the coming of the prey. When wise to the quarry, they thunder to the fray, their jousting horns whet and stopped by the Keepers. Their ferocious snarling and chomping for flesh will break the knee of even the staunchest rival. The swine are faithful to the task, but mindless in their hunger. Husband them well, and when they smell the kill and the chain is dropped, marvel at the slaughter they bring. --- Image: Demonic Crucible / Hell Guard Praise the Ebon Leech, the Bone Striders, protectors of the spoils. The pilfering recreant shall not pass them, for in their task they are fervent, and in his craving he is naked. Though the Slayer seeks the Crucible, its dreadful power holds no quarter for the deviant. As he grovels in its magnitude, the Hell Guard shall decollate his head and feed it to the imps. --- Image: The Gladiator in Sentinel Prime The Priests of the Veil of Shadows shall choose their warden from the mightiest gladiators of the Blood Pits. For the exiled calling, only the worthiest shall be anointed to the Crepuscular Battalion. Those of the Hallowed Order must be versed in battle, mightier than the Gargaska of Drumavi, swifter than the Leviathan of Srax-Orhmu, and more ferocious than the Nameless that scavenge the Great Steppe. Above all, the Gladiator stands firm, his ward behind his shield, battened against all who oppose the coming annihilation. --- Image: Spider Mastermind / flesh pillar (spawned during boss fight) Marvel in the presence of the Aranae Imperatrix. Her age uncounted, her form mercurial. In her wisdom, the crooked devices of the traitors are transformed, bent to the will of the Atorcoppe Queen. Ever she lurks in the shadows, biding for a wretch to sacrifice itself to the fire in her name. She keeps watch on her treasured cache; the souls of her sufferers, bound in rock and turmoil in perpetuity. She smolders, growing ever stronger until the gate is opened, the web is cast, and her collection risen. --- Image: Unnamed mountainous landscape By the hexen of the priests, we match; brought unto the enemy through the runes. Though the realm of the heathen is vast, ever will the predator hook the serpentine slot of the prey. And when the first soul feeds the fountain, the deal is struck. The rune is cut. The fate, dealt. Thus the enemy is baited, with no sanctum for harbor and no corner to conceal their stench; for we know the way as written. They are laid bare before the Night Swarm, spread prone and pleading in the burning fist, waiting for the Army of Hell to rectify their unholy path. --- Image: Kadingir Sanctum In the third age, the Rune of Drumavi was worked. The heretics, demented in their hubris, coveted the Eye and marked not the agony of its terrible power. They craved the sorcery of demon-kind, and in their insolence, begged for the reckoning. Thus it was brought upon them, by scythe and bludgeon, through the gift of the all-seeing Eye. The onslaught was brutal, and no mercy was granted. We razed their castle and laid their land barren. We impaled their filthy corpses on the battlements, and gorged on their entrails. We consecrated the blood-soaked ground with the Feast of Drumavi, their bodies consumed and their souls fed to the fountain. --- Image: Hell (Titan's Realm I think...) All hail the glory of our realm, our triumphant temples scorching, our pits of despair overflowing with infidel fodder for the Dark Lords. Bend your unworthy knee under the grandeur of the Forsaken Cathedral, where the Basilica of Judgement casts its eye upon your unworthy existence. Drink the foul black water from the Font of Agony, then brand your flesh in the Forge of the Betrayer. Supplicate yourself to our design, for we build monument on desolation, and raise pillar on bone. Our brick is the bone of the enemy, and their blood is the strength in the mortar. --- Image: Cultist Base props (descending blade and torture device) In the hour of their defeat, as the ravenous horde fed upon the children of Praxat Avas, the Blackgard unleashed their mightiest warrior into the fray; the Gargaska. His eyes cast far across the battlefield, his basalt mace seeking a worthy opponent among our gathering storm. To his challenge strode the Baalgar, he that was taken and turned, his burning blade raised high in salute to the Dark Lords. The Baalgar cut a path through our horde to meet the enemy goliath. In the heathen's Temple of Tol Pterus they set upon each other, two titans matched in will and purpose. None survived beneath their wrath; droves of men and demon laid waste by their struggle. And as the mighty temple fell, the enemy cowards were routed and turned on themselves. The Blackgard's lines broken, the Gargaska stood alone, his flesh burning from the touch of the Baalgar, his iron will crippled to despair. The Baalgar cleft his legs with one magnificent cut of the sword, then fed the bone to his minions. --- Image: Icon of Sin (2016 Necropolis) Thus the hand of fate was dealt, and the Great Ones obliterated the blasphemous land of Argent D'Nur. They came in number, the giants of extermination; the Leviathan, the Gargaska, and the Supentor. At their head strode the Icon of Sin. He that supped the heart-blood of the Betrayer's Son, Champion of Champions, the Architect of Slaughter. He cast dread upon the heretics and the cowards fled before him as mewling whelps. In his presence they felt the betrayal of their own kind, and witnessed the delusion of their righteous nature exposed. And as the Father wept, the son feasted on the flesh of his kin. --- Image: Icon of Sin (2016 carving) He shall tread upon the souls of the enemy, the greatest of the horde, the blood-drinker, for he is the eater of worlds. His name is malice, and his hunger shall never be sated. He comes with insidious nature, for they will seek to control the Icon, and in their rotten desire they shall bring upon themselves horror wrought by the mighty hand of Sin. Let them call, let the wretches beg for his presence, and then in his aftermath we shall gorge on the greed of their hope. --- Analysis of terms/events of interest (in order of mention): The Burning Light: Likely referring to the fire of Hell. Dark Lords: Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal's lorebook suggest there are multiple Dark Lords but The Ancient Gods describes Davoth as "The Dark Lord". Not sure what is the accurate take here. It's likely "The Crucible" naming scheme from 2016 all over again. If I had to guess, there are multiple demons that hold titles as "a Dark Lord" but only one (Davoth) that holds the ultimate title as "The Dark Lord". Lucent Defiler: Referring to Samuel Hayden. Interestingly, this strengthens the "Hayden = Satan" theory because of the word choice: Lucent Defiler (Lucifer). However, it seems Hell is opposed to Hayden and seeks to destroy him for his alliegance to the Slayer. There is a theory that a Transfigured Samur may become the next Dark Lord after Davoth is slain, thereby fulfilling the Kadingir Tree prophecy from 2016, the Hayden = Satan theory, and setting up future Doom titles. Unchained Predator: Referring to the Slayer. The Night, The Long Night: Likely referring to the moment or time when demons are successful in their conquest against civilizations, i.e. the demons cover worlds in perpetual night. Day of Atonement: Referring to Hell's invasion of Earth. Thaxor, the Great Nest, the Carriage of Carnage: Likely referring to the Super Gore Nest. Dark One: In the Eternal Codex, "Dark One" is mentioned twice in two contexts: (1) referring to an entity that the Khan Maykr claimed would threaten the Night Sentinels passage to Urdak, and (2) referring to the demons when they first invaded Argent D'Nur. In Doom Eternal's lorebook, it seems "Dark One" is in a different context again: referring to some greater Hell entity apart from the Titans that is greater than the "false gods" of the Night Sentinels and that the light-dwellers' machines of war would be "ravaged at the inclination of the Dark One.", implying a higher status. Abhorrent One: Might be referring to King Novik, as the image in the page is showing the Gift of Argent and the demonic writer is lamenting the worship of the false gods (likely Maykrs). The Eye: Might be referring to the Eye of Kalibas since it mentions the Unwilling are made to serve before it, and Eternal describes that human souls are judged by the Eye of Kalibas to become either Possessed or Argent fuel. Realm of Burning Light, Domain of Endless Shadow: Likely referring to Hell. The Nameless, Keepers: The former is referrring to Pinkies, while the latter is unknown. We haven't yet seen who tames the Pinkies. Ebon Leech, Bone Striders: The former is referring to the leeches powering the Hell Guards, while the latter is referring to the biomechanical Hell Guards themselves. Veil of Shadows: Likely referring to the Hell Priests of Argent D'Nur as it mentions they must select a warden (i.e. a guardian) - which those Priests had done. It could be referring to another group of Priests though. Blood Pits: Apparently where wardens are chosen by the Priests. A bit odd since Deag Ranak's warden/guardian seems to be a personal creation, his Doom Hunters. Crepascular Battalion: For being anointed the wardens of the Priests, only the worthiest demons can join this order. Likely the same thing as the Hallowed Order. The Gladiator is part of the Crepascular Battalion / Hallowed Order. Hallowed Order: Related to the Crepascular Battalion. Apparently those in this order are asked to be "mightier" than the Gargaska, the Levianthan, or the Nameless. As the Nameless are Pinkies, I do have to wonder how mighty Gargaska and the Levianthan actually are if they are compared in the same sentence together. Specifically Gargaska, because apparently it was once a warrior that fought the Baalgar. The lorebook also describes Gargaska and The Levianthan as the "giants of extermination" during the conquest of Argent D'Nur, with the Icon of Sin as their "head" leading them. Or perhaps Hell likes to hype up Pinkies as they do have their own page entry in the lorebook after all. Gargaska of Drumavi: A mighty warrior that fought against the Baalgar during Hell's battle against the Blackgard but was killed and fed to the demons. It was apparently later raised to become part of Hell's army as it was present during the invasion on Argent D'Nur when the Icon attacked, described as a "giant of extermination". Drumavi is likely the world that Gargaska hails from. Leviathan of Srax-Orhmu: Unknown entity but appeared during the invasion of Argent D'Nur when the Icon attacked, described as a "giant of extermination". Atorcoppe Queen: Referring to the Spider Mastermind. Atorcoppe apparently means "poison head" and was used to describe spiders. Source. Night Swarm: Likely referring to Hell's armies. Drumavi, Rune of Drumavi, Feast of Drumavi: Drumavi is likely referring to a world that Hell conquered. First, Gargaska is from Drumavi and we learn that the demons attacked and destroyed the Blackgard and their champion, Gargaska. Second, the demonic writer has already mentioned that demons are able to invade a world through the use of runes - so working the "Rune of Drumavi" could be referring to summoning demons to that world specifically. Finally, when the demons won - they devoured the denizens of Drumavi and referred to it as the "Feast of Drumavi". According to the 2016 Codex, it does mention that a great battle occurred in the Titan's Realm during the Third Age (which was also when the Rune of Drumavi was worked, prompting the demon invasion) and that the UAC would later recover the remains of an anicent Baalgar from that location. Not sure if those two events are related (since the Baalgar won the conflict against the Gargaska) but it's the only other reference to the Third Age. Forsaken Cathedral: An unknown location in Hell, where the Basilica of Judgement resides. Possibly a place of sanctity as the original context is "bend your unworthy knee under the grandeur of the Forsaken Cathedral..." Basilica of Judgement: Found in the Forsaken Cathedral - but unsure if this is related to the all-seeing Eye from before. The original context is "Basilica of Judgement casts its eye upon your unworthy existence." Unlike the Eye from before, this "eye" is not upper-case so it might be different. Font of Agony: Unknown, just the original context of "drink the foul black water of the Font of Agony". Forge of the Betrayer: Unsure if this is related to Commander Valen, the Betrayer of Argent D'Nur. It mentions its use to brand - also not sure what that could be but it's probably a pentagram. Praxat Avas: Likely referring to the leader of the Blackgard. The demonic writer has already referred to the ARC resistance on Earth as the "bastard children" of Samuel Hayden, so feeding upon the "children of Praxat Avas" follows that precedent. Blackgard: A civilization, likely from Drumavi, that fought against Hell but was defeated. The people of Drumavi sought to covet the Eye and learn demon magic, working the "Rune of Drumavi" that invited the demons into invasion of their world. Apparently the Blackgard were comprised of humans as "droves of men and demon" were laid waste during the battle between the Gargaska and the Baalgar. Temple of Tol Pterus: A location likely belonging to the Blackgard. It was destroyed in the battle between the Gargaska and the Baalgar, which was a turning point that led the demons to victory. Supentor: Unknown entity, but was present during the invasion of Argent D'Nur when the Icon attacked, described as a "giant of extermination". Champion of Champions, Architect of Slaughter: Referring to the Icon of Sin. Father: Likely referring to Commander Valen based on the sentence context. Doesn't seem to be referencing The Father of Urdak despite its use of the upper-case. --- Samuel Hayden: Apparently "fled the battlefield" when the "walls crumbled", likely referring to Operation: Hellbreaker - Hayden's final counter-attack plan that ended in failure. Cyberdemon: The Baalgar was "taken and turned" to join Hell's army. It's unknown where the Baalgar may have originally been from. Spider Mastermind: The flesh pillars it spawns during its boss fight are made of "its sufferers", likely referring to her victims when they are slain. Also, the Spider Mastermind "transformed" the "crooked devices of the traitors", likely referring to the Mastermind's use and melding of human technology with demonic flesh. Ungmar's Codex: According to the Super Shotgun Codex entry, its passage (shown above in the old lore section) was written and translated from the "Ungmar Codex" - which suggests the lorebook itself may be an adaptation or piece of the Ungmar Codex. The Ungmar Codex is also mentioned in 2016 lore in an Elemental Wraith Codex entry describing Hell's conquest of Argent D'Nur, along with a separate unquoted passage describing the "Wraith-Call" that caused panic among the people of Argent D'Nur. --- Most of the new lore seems to be about world-building and many images seem to be mostly concept arts (hence why we don't see the Gargaska despite its many mentions). The inclusion of images of Summoners, Kadingir Sanctum, and Hell Guards makes me think this was probably written much earlier on in Eternal's development since they don't seem to mention anything about Urdak, Nekravol, the Sentinel civil war, etc. and leaned a lot more on 2016 lore and imagery influence. The closest we get to Eternal's plot is mentions of the initial invasion of Earth and the creation of the Super Gore Nest (the latter being one of the vertical slice levels that were first created). The Tyrants and Gladiator are enemies in Eternal that weren't shown in the first gameplay reveal, so their inclusion here is interesting. Edit: actually they do mention that the Abhorrent One (likely King Novik) worshiping the false gods (likely the Maykrs) as part of Eternal's plot. It even mentions that the false gods will be exposed as "parasites to the tail of the Dark One" - which is somewhat true because we learn that the Maykrs have a hidden connection to Hell. Hope you enjoyed reading the new lore and found my analysis insightful. Edited March 15, 2021 by AtimZarr1 : Grammar and minor additions/changes. 18 Share this post Link to post

Another earlier passage that has a changed meaning with new lore: --- "Some of you in a previous life may have held childish notions of God and the kingdom of heaven. This ugly representation of a spiritual nirvana was designed to control you, to placate your natural feelings of hate and rage, to subdue your realization of your place in this universe. By embracing science, you took the first steps towards freedom from these intellectual chains. By dedicating yourself to the development of Argent Energy, you cemented your place in the next age. Now let us tell you about the real heaven. The real kingdom of the gods is a place that you will never reach, and you should never wish to. No human will ever visit the sacred ground of Argent D'Nur, unless they are made a god by the dark lords. Humanity's only purpose, and reward, is to serve the ascension of the Imperatrix and protect the Crucible. You will be destroyed by the demons, while I will be made a god. My immortality is assured, while you will writhe in perpetual agony at the bottom of the darkest hole in Hell. You will be forgotten. Your life, your loved ones, your achievements and failures are nothing. A blank space on the canvas of time. Thank you for your service. May you rot in Hell. Olivia Pierce." Doom 2016 Codex (VEGA Central Processing) --- A bit interesting in hindsight considering TAG states that Hell (Jekkad) is supposed to be the "original" Heaven before Urdak. In that sense, Olivia was correct in telling us about "the real heaven." It's also plausible she came to this understanding because she was in contact with The Dark Lord during the events of Doom 2016. We could also say that the "childish notions of God" could also be retroactively hinting at the lies of The Father / Maykrs and the truth of the Dark Lord's role as the true Creator - although that might not work since Hugo has been suggesting that Davoth isn't the ultimate creator. In any case, I think this Olivia Codex about the "real Heaven" is likely a happy coincidence but it's also interesting to try to see how 2016 lore aligns with Eternal / TAG lore. 2 Share this post Link to post
